Ah, rivalry weekend. That final weekend (has it gone by this fast, it's so much funner when we are winning) when traditions are played out or in our case where a game that is supposed to be a big rivalry but somehow hasn't caught on gets played.

We start on Thursday, turkey day, with a game that looks like it might be interesting, at least more interesting than the dull crap the NFL throws at us.

A 6-4 LSU team that has already fired it's coach goes to an 8-3 Texas A&M which may be the only big Texas power not to fire it's coach this year. Both teams out of the running for championships so just playing for bowl positioning.

Friday the real fun starts
Biggest game of the day
#5 Washington visits #23 Washington State in a game for the PAC12 North title and if Washington wins a chance to continue on to the playoff. Washington State has had a great year but I don't think they have the defense to beat Washington.

Also on the slate #15 Nebraska travels to 7-4 Iowa, a team that struggled early but has been getting better. Fuskers are overrated and Iowa has had success against them. Oh well, kNU fans you can always enjoy your meaningless bowl game that gets you out of the winter hell hole.

Local interest
8-3 Air Force host #19 Boise. Boise has had success against the Zoomies but a win would give AFA a 9 win season.

Saturday
Easily the biggest game of the weekend has #2 Ohio State hosting #3 Michigan. The winner is almost assured a spot in the playoff. Is there room in the stadium for both coaches egos at the same time?

Staying in the B1G disappointing Michigan State could salvage some pride beating #7 Penn State on the road. A Pedo State win could let them slide into the conference championship game.

#13 Auburn plays at #1 Alabama. Bama is the consensus best team in the nation right now but this is a game that has seen plenty of upsets over the years

Staying in the south
#15 Florida goes to #14 Florida State. Florida has a terrible offense, Florida State was supposed to be one of the best teams in the country. Can Sparkles pull it off, will this be Jimbo's last regular season game before moving on? Can more than half the players read and write? Lots of story lines here.

Other interesting games
Georgia Tech vs. Georgia both 7-4
8-3 Minnesota at #6 Wisconsin
9-2 Toledo visits 11-0 #21 Western Michigan, can they ruin their dream season.

In some games that may be the last with their teams for involved coaches
4-7 UCLA at 4-7 Cal
4-7 Oregon at 3-8 Oregon State
5-6 Arizona State looking for bowl eligibility tries to put one more beating on RichRod and the 2-9 Arizona squad

In teams we love to see lose
Stumbling 6-4 Baylor goes to 4-7 Texas Tech
5-6 Texas host 5-5 TCU
And the Barely Breathing (certainly not fighting) Irish of Notre Dame get to be run out of the stadium by #12 USC

Close to home
6-5 CSU gets to go to 9-2 San Diego State
8-3 Wyoming travels to 7-4 New Mexico

In smaller schools
Worth watching for the pagentry
8-1 Grambling plays 8-2 Southern This year this should be a good game. Even when it isn't it's worth watching just to see the fans and the bands.

Locally UNC in done and Colorado Mesa lost last week but Colorado Mines won to advance to a game with Ferris State this weekend

I left out my bad game of the week.
3-8 San Jose goes to 1-10 Fresno State,
Remember when Fresno used to be the team that beat P5 teams. The could have easily scored 100 on us when an Embree Buffs team (I hesitate to say Embree led Buffs team) went there. Now they are the get well opponent.

I want Tedford to turn things around. That school and its fans were nothing but class in the aftermath of the Boulder flood. I'll always wish for them to do well out there.

That is almost random. After "the Buffs" who gives a flying ****?

My brother went to the AFA and I enjoy going to the occasional game there, great atmosphere and a bunch of kids who play very hard.

Wyoming has a lot of Colorado HS kids who while not good enough to play for a P5 program continue to find success playing at the G5 level, like to see them do well.
If the sheep are going to be on our schedule them having some success gives more credibility to our wins over them. Don't want them winning enough that they get all full of themselves and think they are our equal but a .500 record and some minor bowl is okay.

I grew up back in the days where you could be a fan of the "local" WAC teams and it didn't impinge on your Buff fandom.

A part of me still feels the same way. It's cool that all four Front Range teams are bowling. I tend to still root against the Rams against a lot of teams, but that's more because of their lame ass fans than anything.

The Zoomies have always been my second favorite team, I grew up much closer to the Springs than Boulder and saw more games at Falcon Stadium through high school than Folsom.

You brought up the sometimes goofy nature of the Auburn-Alabama game, Mtn.

The "Kick-6" is probably my most favorite non-Buff ending to a college game of all time, just for its uniqueness and suddenness. Plus it made Saban look like a dumbass for trying that kick, so gravy.

Washington didn't look overly impressive against ASU, despite the score. Either they were looking ahead to the Apple Cup, or USC has them shaken a bit. Would not count out Wazzu with the game in Pullman.

Shame Notre Dame sucks ass (the one and only time I'll ever say that). Could have done us a favor by knocking USC back in the rankings for our Rose hopes. Baffling how far they've dropped in one season.

GT has only won 2 of their last 15 against Georgia. Johnson is 2-6, personally. A win over the Dawgs to get to 8-4 to go along with their recent dominating win in Blacksburg would likely save Johnson again. They can complain about him all they want, but GT is in fantasy land if they think they're of a caliber to fire an 8-4 coach. A loss followed by a bowl loss and thus 7-6 is a different story. But even still, he's delivered 4 division titles and and two Orange Bowls. GT should be careful.

Arizona State playing for their bowl life at 5-6 against lifeless Arizona. With UCLA, Cal, Oregon, Arizona, Oregon State, and maybe ASU, we're going to have some shake ups in the usual bowl alignment. MWC is probably licking their chops if they have teams to fill it and avoid their usual embarrassing selection of bowls.

Another year of misery seems to await UVA against VT. They've just taken over a series that was once classic after classic. Some close calls in recent years and I would imagine UVA will pour everything into this game. Mendenhall knows it's his way of salvaging a miserable season in which he talked the talk about "We don't know what it's like to stay home for the holidays" and then promptly sits at 2-9. This rebuild was either more than he expected, or he's done a poor job. Mix of both, frankly. He needs this, however highly unlikely it is that he pulls it off. His rivalry record against BYU wasn't exactly stellar.

Looks like a Wyo win gets them in the MWC Champ game? They own the tiebreaker over Boise, with both sitting at 6-1 at the moment. Don't like that they're on the road against a resurgent 7-4 (5-2) New Mexico, though. Boise may slip through at the end, although their own game at Air Force is no cakewalk.

Wake 6-5 vs Boston College 5-6 (with a top APR) is your prime example for why there are too many bowl games. Yeah, college football is great and we can't get enough. Teams with 1 conference win don't belong in bowl games, period.

I guess we're rooting for Texas A&M to beat LSU tonight. Weakens the Wisconsin resume considerably if LSU finishes at 6-5.

Me too, but we weren't playing them. It was really easy to root for e.g. Lawrence McCutcheon when he got zero yards against CU.

It's just crazy to think that in a year where Michigan and Ohio State are 2 of the best 4 teams in the country, that there's a very high likelihood that Wisconsin and Penn State play in the Big 10 championship game.

Here's a question for Trivia Buffs:

Stanford University is a 36-point favorite against Rice University this week, in an epic battle between two schools that have what thing in common (that only a few other schools nationwide can also claim)? Hint: the others include Arizona State University and Tulane University.

Lot of talent on the field here between LSU and A&M but neither team looks that sharp. I can see them being a little disinterested since both had high expectations coming into the season but neither lived up to their talent.

And if those had been PAC12 refs that would have been a targeting call. SEC no flag.

is it just me or does ATM seem to lose a lot more homes games than the Kyle mystique (hype) should allow?

or: to say the same thing a different way: playing at Kyle, not such a big deal. Aggies are eminently beatable there....and have been for a long time.

Does this push LSU into picking Ed O?
They've reportedly already chosen Herman. I think this game is Ed Orgeron's "**** you" to LSU. It's also a great way for Orgeron to audition for another HC job. I'm pretty sure he will be employed somewhere next year.

Does Texas A&M have a defensive coordinator? Doesn't look like it but if they do he should be fired. An LSU offense that has had trouble moving the ball in a lot of games this year looks like an unstoppable train.

Now they show him in the booth. A&M has been questionable on defense all year, and it isn't about talent.

It's amazing how the guy doesnt get the job. Its kind of like Norm Chow (without the sting Ole Miss). There is a private reason that keeps preventing it.

He's a bit of a goober. Reminds me of farmer Fran in "Waterboy". You can't argue his recent results, though.

Or past results (Warren Sapp, Cortez Kennedy, Russell Maryland, Michael Oher, Dexter McCluster and Mike Wallace) to name a few.

New Mexico got boat raced last week in Fort Collins. Can't be resurgent when giving up 400+ yards in rushing. That game was over as half-time

Wyoming has turned it around in text book fashion. Built for the long haul. Very impressive.

Hope so.... should be a shoot out.
