I'd LOVE :slayer: to see this happen

Would be fun and it just makes too much sense.

Although one result of that plan would be to jack with the conferences. Why not have the B12 North and the B12 South have a guaranteed spot in the bracket?

And the SEC East and West? And the ACC Coastal and Atlantic? That's going to be a pretty crowded bracket...

I think the conferences would be fine under that system - the winner of the conference championship game could be guaranteed a playoff spot, with the loser still having a shot at the at large spot...

I like the idea of the playoffs. It's the right thing to do.

I suspect that a program like Baylor or Okie Light might get sick of Boise or BYU showing up every year, so they'd want to bail to the WAC or MAC to improve their chances to play. I'm not sure how much tradition or cohesion these post Big Eight converences have.

I agree with you on the playoff - it IS the right thing to do, IMO. If the lower divisions can have one, why can't the big boys? It is just ridiculous, really.

Good point about the idea that lower level teams from big conferences might go looking for easier paths to the playoff. Baylor, specifically, may not be so likely to do that, since apparently some very well connected Baylor alums pulled lots of strings to get them into the Big XII and probably aren't going to be very excited about them downgrading to another conference, even if it is to pursue a playoff spot...

I dont really like the playoff idea. Especially one that big. What makes cfb so exciting is the importance of EVERY game each saturday. If they instate a 16 team playoff that wont be the case. Sure the playoffs would be exciting, but the regular season would lose so much significance.

16 teams is eight too many. I'd go with 8 teams, the winner of each conference. as the BCS has 6 conference tie-ins right now, adding two more wouldnt be to difficult.

the reason being is you cant have these "yound adults" playing football from basically the 1st of August to the 1st of January.... rememer they are STUDENT/athletes...

The current system is a joke when you consider that Georgia will probably play in a major bowl while not even winning their half of the SEC conference. That clearly exposes the farce of an argument that every game is a playoff game in the college. Actually it looks more like every game is a popularity contest to keep your ranking. Then there is the fact that every number 2 team has lost this year demonstrating that the pollsters and the system can not seem to identify who the second best team is. How Hawaii is not ranked 2nd is completely beyond me. They have yet to lose.

I can tell you this; if you knew your season was over by not making it to the championship game then every game would be a playoff game.

excellent point-
the regular season would mean alot if this 16 team playoff
were to be used- plus....
the better the record, the better the ranking which means
HOME playoff games against what's on paper
an easier opponent-
I love the idea of including the WAC, MWC and the other
Mid Major conference winners. Just how good is Hawaii ?
BYU ?? This system would show us. UGA and BYU-
I'd think UGA would beat them by 14 but who knows ?
Could Brennan pass for 500 yds against KU ?
This would be compelling theatre.
And the arguement that 8 teams are better than 16 ??
Don't agree- we are only talking 1 extra week. Go to 8 teams and we can't include the 'fun factor' of having all
11 conference winners.
ALSO- teams will give their collective left nuts to be a part
of the 5 'at large' births. The regular season would still be
very important.
I sure hope I'm alive to see a playoff system.

I'd agree that it would have to be 16 teams. Probably have to shorten the regular season back to 11 games and have to start the season last week of August. If we did have playoffs about the CCG game gets eliminated.

Another point here is with so many bowl games now it seems that everyone makes the post seaon and few people watch since almost all the games are meaningless.

It's like CU going to the Indy bowl; no one but us and the other teams fans will give a sh*t or watch it. Hell, we could still have some bowls after the playoffs. It'd just be the NIT.

Didn't see this posted but I only skimmed the posts.

One problem I have with that bracket. You could have a good chance of Missiouri and Oklahoma playing each other three times in one year. I could care less to watch a team play each other three times or if the one playing trying to beat the same team three times.

I would like to see a playoff but it's going to be a big job. Maybe someday someone will figure it out and NCAA will go for it. I doubt the NCAA part though. Current system is making a lot of money.

Then how can they manage it in D-1AA, D-II and D-III? How can they have mens BB players playing several games a week from November until almost April? Sorry, I just don't buy the idea that taking away 1 regular season game and 1 bowl game from 16 teams and replacing them with anywhere from 1 to 4 extra playoff games is going to be the end of the scholar/athlete as we know it...

This is definitely how I feel about it too. One of the unique and great things about college football is the significance of the regular season. 16 teams is too many and I even think that 8 is too many. Sure the NCAA basketball tournament is awesome, but one of the things I don't like about it is that it diminishes the regular season. What is, say, an 8th-ranked Duke team playing for in February? Nothing, other than are they going to be a 2 or a 3-seed. Big whup.

I don't even think the plus-1 format is the best way to go. The model I've always liked best is the one proposed by Phil Steele, which is a 4-team playoff with the 3 playoff games rotating among the major bowls, and then leave all the other bowls intact.

That´s what I want to see. One additional game won´t make that much of a difference.

I do not like the current system and I think the BCS is crap, but in some way I think one of the reasons why College FB is so popular are the discussions that come with the current system. Those discussions can last well into the offseason.

Agree it always a debate and I think there are alot of $$$ at stake - money may be the reason for the current system - I bet Phoenix brings in millions per bowl with travelers etc

Who here can tell how the Bowl game's came to be?

Matt's got a point on the bracket. Plus, I kinka think the conference commish's would be screamin' if 2 or 3 of their teams were grouped so close together (see B12 teams in the example).

I like the playoff idea, but 16 teams may be too big a mountain at first. The final 4 format might be a good starting point. Success with that venture could lead to something bigger without sacrificing the current bowls.

I am more in favor of the 8 team playoff. If your the #9 team bitching about not being in you probably have 3 losses and have no right to complain. Which makes the regular season important still. The 16 team format gives it more of the basketball tournament feeling giving the smaller conferences a shot of winning. It adds the Cinderella effect to the tournament and can make it more exciting. How funny would be to have Central Florida knock off OSU or #1 Mizzou lose to Central Michigan. Nobody complains when it happens in basketball tourny why complain if it happens in a football one.

Since I don't know much about it I guess I'll ask.
Why couldn't a playoff system like the ones employed by Div. I and II schools work here?

They have worked there for years and one of them utilizes a format that includes 32 teams. It does produce a champion and most of those schools still play an eleven game regular season I believe.

I'm not for a playoff, not necessarily against it either, but it still doesn't accomplish the best team winning.

but it still doesn't accomplish the best team winning.

Possible but anything would be better than the BCS. It is going to be OSU vs LSU, who says OU and SC aren't better than both of them? OU looked strong last night and everybody bags SC for the loss to Stanford but would it have been a loss if Booty hadn't had a broken hand and thrown four int's. The debate could last a lifetime but at least a playoff could give the bigs the opportunity to prove a #1

Because the bowls are already here and they pay so much $$ to the NCAA they're not going away anytime soon. That's why I say any playoff will have to incorporate the bowls. Because the bowls aren't going to just up and disappear.

How about the four biggest bowls host the quarters, semi's and finals in rotation and any early rounds needed square off in the lower tier bowls. Top eight teams get an automatic bye.

attendance will suck for the quarters and semi's.
