Heard from a friend with ties to Hawaii that Cabral is interviewing. Apparently it has been covered in the papers there....

Anyone else have this on their radar?

I dont think he'll leave. Also from ESPN Tomey seems to be the favorite/

"Jones wrote that he probably would have signed an extension if an offer was made in 2006, before this past season or as late as the Dec. 1 regular-season finale.

In his e-mail, Jones also left behind a list of five possible successors with local ties: New York Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride, Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Norm Chow, San Jose State coach Dick Tomey, Texas assistant coach Duane Akina and Hawaii linebackers coach Cal Lee.

"I have talked to them and they are interested," Jones wrote. "I know you know a lot of people too that would be good but this place is different and unless you get someone that knows Hawaii you will take a big step backwards."

I think Cabral has made a home of Boulder.

Hawai'i article:

Jones talks up local ties for his successor

Dick Tomey, a former University of Hawai'i football coach, and Norm Chow, Cal Lee and Duane Akina, who have been finalists for the post in the past, are among the most prominently mentioned possibilities to succeed departing June Jones.

Jones ended a nine-year stay when he accepted the Southern Methodist University job yesterday. In an e-mail to athletic director Herman Frazier last week announcing his resignation, Jones recommended five candidates to UH: Tomey, Chow, Akina, Lee and Kevin Gilbride.

In the e-mail, Jones said, "I have talked to them and they are interested."

Jones also said in the e-mail that, "unless you get someone that knows Hawai'i you will take a big step backwards."

All but Gilbride, offensive coordinator of the New York Giants, were born or have coached extensively here.

Tomey, who had been the most successful UH head coach during a decade-long run (1977-86) in which he was 63-46 until Jones (76-41) surpassed him, just finished his third season at San Jose State, a Western Athletic Conference rival of the Warriors.

Tomey declined comment on Jones' departure Saturday night and did not return calls yesterday. Tomey, 68, had been considered for the athletic director's job that went to Herman Frazier in 2002 and is in the UH Circle of Honor. "A lot of people would love this choice," Jones told Frazier in the e-mail.

Chow, who groomed three Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks and six first-round draft picks while the offensive coordinator at Brigham Young, North Carolina State and Southern California, is the offensive coordinator of the NFL's Tennessee Titans, whose season ended Sunday in the AFC playoffs. He was a finalist in 1995 when Fred vonAppen replaced Bob Wagner.

Chow, 61, had refused to talk about the opening Saturday while the Titans remained in the playoffs. Yesterday, he did not return calls.

In the e-mail to Frazier, Jones said, "you know his (Chow's) credentials. Will cost you more probably."

Chow reportedly earns approximately $2 million per season with the Titans.

Akina, a Punahou School graduate and backup quarterback to Warren Moon at the University of Washington, has been defensive coordinator or associate head coach at Arizona and Texas. He was an assistant at UH (1983-'86).

A Texas spokesman said Longhorn assistants are not permitted to discuss job openings without head coach Mack Brown's approval. But friends say Akina "would be interested if (UH) is interested" in him. "He'd love to come home and coach again at UH."

In the e-mail to Frazier, Jones described Akina as, "a local boy that wants to come home and his resume is a great one. He is a great person."

Lee, 59, the most successful head coach in Hawai'i high school history, winning 14 Prep Bowl titles and 18 Interscholastic League of Honolulu football championships, has been on Jones' staff for four seasons.

Of Lee, Jones wrote, "Local boy knows what we are doing and (is) a winner. (Brother) Ron can continue to run (the) offense and Cal knows (defensive coordinator Greg McMackin's) stuff. Never been a college head coach but capable."

Gilbride has been a head coach at Connecticut and with the San Diego Chargers. Jones was on Gilbride's staff with the Chargers and succeeded Gilbride there in 1998. Gilbride's son played at UH and his brother-in-law, Mike Cavanaugh, coached at UH under Jones and is now at Oregon State.

Other possible candidates include UH assistants Rich Miano, Dennis McKnight and Jeff Reinebold, and Colorado assistant Brian Cabral.

Dan Morrison, Wes Suan and Greg McMackin are expected to accompany Jones to SMU.

In addition, former Boise State and Arizona State coach Dirk Koetter has been recommended to UH officials. Koetter coached Arizona State in the 2006 Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl and is offensive coordinator of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

I would be willing to bet some cold hard $$$ that if Cabral were offered the HC job at HI...he'd take it in a heartbeat

if he gets the job, he should take it. it would probably be a good fit for him and he deserves a shot at the hc job... i'd even root for them... the only sucky part will be when we play them.

Losing Cabral would be a HUGE blow to our recruiting efforts on the islands. Not just the islands but in general. I like to think that Cabral doesn't want to be a head coach because of all the BS involved. Some people don't want that. I hope that is what Cabral is thinking.

Im sure you would turn down a raise that'd pay you 8x what your currently making just cuase you like it somewhere.

I think Cabral would like the shot at a HC job but maybe not at the D-1A level. There is so much political BS and media spot light pressure at a D1A school as a HC and I don't think he likes that kind of attention much. I do think he would be a superb HC at a D2 school where there is more room to fly under the media radar. Too bad the UNC job didn't pan out for him.

:yeahthat:

There are alot of people in the business that would be great HC at a D1 school or even HS. But the politics of it really turns them away. Crazy huh miamibuffs. :smile2:

If he wanted to be a HC, do you really think he'd still be here? Doing the same exact job? Come on.

He's lucky he's stayed as long as he has given the transient nature of job. It has a lot to do with the fact that he's considered one of the best LB coaches arround. He's put up with a lot of BS to stick arround here and obviously part of that is liking Boulder. I hope he doesn't go either but if he does he gets my 100% support.

I agree. Our poly ties would be devastated. But Cabral has said he is interested in being a Head Coach. Wasn't he interested in the UNC opening???

Yes he was but they didn't offer.

Yeah - Cabral IS DEFINITELY interested in becoming a head coach eventually. I think he loves Boulder, loves CU, and loves Hawaii. I don't think he'll leave for Hawaii however, because as a lot of my Hawaiin friends have said, it's great to visit but not that great to live. After all, you're on an island - you're sort of trapped there. They all love Hawaii still, but don't want to return.

He wants to be a head coach, but he has expressed interest in being the Buffs' head coach. Sure, he isn't going to leave for any job out there, but he does want to be a head coach. I would not be surprised to see him leave within four-five years for a head coaching job if he continues to produce players like he has been.

Both Cabral and Bienemy have expressed a desire to be CU's head coach, and both are doing great work in working to achieve that.

Valdezis right, island pipeline would be hurt big time. Why not make him defensive coordinator, his been a position coach long enough,he's been the best coach at cu for position coaches and can he do any worse than collins? BTW,what has irv's son done since he's been here?

If Cabral is so hellbent on becoming the next coach here at CU, then why doesn't he try to go after the DC job? I really believe if he wanted it he could've gotten one here, or somewhere else.

That was the knock on Embree and Bienemy. They were only position coaches. That's the reason they went to the NFL. To get more experience so they could get a OC or DC job in college ball.

CU will never repeat the mistake of hiring a position coach with no coordinator experiance. We learned our lesson with the weasel.

Cabral ain't goin' anywhere: Linebacker U!

Cabral, a native of Hawaii who has coached at CU since 1989, said Wednesday night he will not be a candidate for the head football coaching job at the University of Hawaii.

:bowdown::dance::woot::gobuffs:

Yeah saw the article on Daily Camera, that's awesome news!! CU will continue to be Linebacker U, but think we either need to promote him or give him a pay raise, he has certainly earned it.

Thanks for the news Beltway, that makes my morning.
