Offensive Line

Definitely a rough night. I think a lot of the issues come down to our scheme. We don’t use Montez enough in the run game, we don’t use a tight end at all and we don’t utilize the middle of the field in the passing game. Based off of that, opposing linebackers don’t have near the responsibilities they normally do and their job becomes a lot easier when it is usually the hardest job on defense.

Well, when the coaches continue to trot out Haigler at OG and Kaiser at tackle on the same side, things are gonna be bad. There is nothing about Kaiser that should lead anyone to believe he can be an effective tackle. However there is a lot of evidence that Haigler is not an effective guard and Kaiser is not an effective tackle. It should also say something that our starting O-line tonight had two redshirt freshmen (Sherman, Pursell), one true freshman (Filip), a converted D-lineman (Tonz), and a guy playing out of position (Haigler).

Our Oline is weak and gets man handled.....USC had a great game plan on defense let massive frontline do damage and send everybody back and let CU have everything short

OL may be the position group where coaching and continuity matter most. Just look at CSU. They constantly trot out a bunch of 2* kids and have very good OLs. Occasionally even putting a lineman in the NFL. We seems to shuffle our OL around like you would a DL and it clearly isn't working. Not to mention guys like Lynott (maybe do to injury) and Haigler have clearly regressed. Although I'm sure it doesn't help Haigler to be moving all around. The OL continues to be horrible despite keeping TEs or RBs in to block most of the time. We've given Adams enough time to learn on the job and he hasn't delivered. We can only blame Bernardi there for so long. All indications are that Adams is a good guy, but it's time to move on. There are plenty of experienced OL coaches out there or Drake-like up-and-comers. It's time to try something different.

While the offensive line was certainly not great, I dont think it was a sieve either last night. Montez generally had time, and took a lot of coverage sacks. Run blocking, however, wasn’t great but USC was stacking the line to take away run game and the short swing passes to the outside. DC Clancy Pendergast called a great game. Chev did not.

Even though Sherman struggled last night, especially early, I thought he adjusted and improved as the game went on.

Kaiser, though, looked overmatched all night.

I want to see the youth movement.

From now on, start Sherman at LT and Fillip at RT. Give them pretty much all the snaps. Keep it going with Pursell at C to keep him developing. That's 3 freshmen OLs. Who should play pretty much every snap.

At guard, I'm not sure what the answer is. Haigler, Lynott and Tonz are 4th year juniors. They have to play like it. Moretti isn't ready due to health and health issues also made it so that Ray has to redshirt this season. Maybe Kutsch needs to get more run in there.

Was going to post something similar. They seem to have settled on Sherman ant LT. At play Filip all the snaps he can at RT. I'd much rather see a true freshman get beat than a RS Senior. At least then I can rationalize it. There really isn't a noticeable difference. And I think an argument can be made that the line has even looked better with Filip in there. The infinite rotation of OL is clearly not working. Let the young guys learn on the job and hope it pays off when they are older.

Yep. As a general rule, always go with talent over experience. You can get a guy experience. You can't raise his talent level.

Shoot Adams from a cannon into the sun.
Done.

Agreed. Kaiser and Haigler just aren't at the level you want them to be. Hopefully next year sees a big step forward with Moretti, Pursell, Ray, Sherman, and Filip getting the majority of snaps.

Run Pass Option. If we build our offense around Shaunault getting the ball and a lot of trickery and stuff that builds up behind the LOS you are going to have trouble against a team that has fast players along their DL. This is Chiv's offense. I didnt watch the SC v Arizona game but AZ brought the game down to the wire. How did Az do that and did we study it?

I thought haigler was doing fine at tackle. We had some scheme issues early in that Nebraska game but then he got moved for no reason. Kaiser needs to be inside if he is going to be used, he is not athletic enough on the outside.

scheme is a lot of the problem. We don't do anything enough to get good at it. It takes repetitions to get good at run blocking. vs asu when they stuck with it it worked. Need more draw plays

I think Adams is trying almost everything he can as he and the staff has to know this is biggest weakness on the team. I have no problem finding different combos, but we are in game 6 and if you are still doing that at this point in the season, then it is too late.

I’m down for combos but two players that shouldn’t not be moved are haigler at right tackle and pursell at center.

It has been an issue for as long as MikMac has been here. Why he can't attract P12 quality and quantity at OL is a mystery to me. Other positions are recruited well, but CU relies on projects. Just because a guy is also a competitive handball player, or a JUDO expert from Liechtenstein does not mean you have outsmarted everybody and landed unknown diamonds in the rough. You need to out recruit your peers for the known prospects.

More than skill positions, it seems like OL is the position that the state of CO actually spits out somewhat reliably... making the diamond in the rough thing even more headscratching. Beating our peers for west-of-the-mississippi OL prospects is so important. Then again, I thought the OL played well, or better than average for CU, against ASU... steps forward, steps back.

Especially since this school has produced two of the best linemen in the league in Solder and Bakhtiari. Should not be hard to show you can make it at the next level by playing here.

I thought the line played exceptionally well against ASU. Even after mentally preparing for a fast and strong USC defensive front, I was still surprised last night.
