So I don't know what to make of the guy. Obviously in the right situation he can be great. But his most recent job is more likely to tell what he is today, not the job prior to that. Arkansas seemed like it would have been a great fit for him, but he lost that team for whatever reason and he really struggled to recruit.

I am a closet Arky fan. I was excited when Bielema went there...he did not pan out, actually he bombed.

Again, I think people would have said that about MM 2 years ago. Or 6 games ago. Not arguing that he didn’t/isn’t. Just saying I don’t think he’s the next level guy we’re looking for.

Context is always important. If you can't look at Babers at Syracuse (or Campbell at Iowa State) and appreciate what they've done so far, then you are restricting your list of candidates to Nick Saban, Chris Petersen etc. Just because MM ran out of steam (and made countless mistakes) doesn't mean the next guy must.

Objectively look at Babers given the context.
1. Is he a good recruiter/evaluator? Just because he wasn't top 25, was he still out-boxing his weight class? Does he value it? If he has good recruiters on staff, and he has cred, he can close them (I'd expect anyway).
2. Is this his ceiling at a coach? Is this even his ceiling at Syracuse?
3. How much success is based on key assistants and would they follow? (avoiding Hawk/CP)

We can find "concerns" with every respectable candidate out there. I wouldn't eliminate guys like above who've had amazing success because their turnarounds look like MMs.

Uh I'll have you know we're currently covering gas vs. charcoal grilling in the "Mike MacIntyre getting fired effective immediately" (or whatever) thread.

Fired....fire up the grill....it's a pretty smooth transition and CERTAINLY on topic. So I think we all know we're pretty on-the-ball.
 
Made it to the stadium....

My 1981 Chevy Silverado is struggling with a flaming couch in the back. The cold windy day is doing wonders for me in my jorts, but damn I look smooth with my Red Seal snuff slicked back mullet.

No sign of Holgs yet. ****... The Red Bull.

Hopefully, my Chevy will withstand the small inferno in the bed while I run over to Sheetz.

Pray I'm not arrested.

My biggest concern with Babers is the weakness of the ACC. Besides Clemson, it’s a trash league
 
We are close to being a good team. We are young. We could be a very good team next year and the year after. We play a particular 3-4 defense that we have recruited to. We have recruited to more of an air raid style offense.

What we don’t want is someone who will come in, tare down everything down and rebuild. Then we would be looking at losing for another two or more years and you could expect some painful transfers.

Ideally we wouldn’t skip a beat. Ideally you’d like to keep some of the coordinators. You’d like to keep the same schemes, just with some adjustments. You’d like to keep all of our good players. There are many things at CU moving in the right direction. We need to keep them moving in the right direction.

There is also a need for sober realism. I want CU to win the National Championship, but this school is not going to be competing for a national championship in the next four years. We CAN BE a continually ranked team with national respect. Just being real.

We also are not a major coaching destination and we are cheap-even when we are generous by our own standards- we are cheap. Just being real.

The only clear solution is to bring back JL. He is familiar with the program, the AD, most of the staff, and many of the players. He wants to be a HC again. He was the driving force behind our 2016 season. He took S Florida from no team to a nationally ranked team faster than any coach in the history of the NCAA. It is generally accepted that he was an elite P5 level coach before he allegedly slapped a child. It’s been a decade since that happened.

JL is the right choice - stabilize the program now! Do it now! He could even come back and coach our bowl game.

I will never understand people who dream small, and then call it "keeping it real," or some other bull****.

Just admit that you're a pessimist. The defining characteristic of a pessimist is that they call themselves "realists."
 
Do we have an AllBuffs insider with boots on the ground? Is someone watching the food carts? Catering vans used as disguise? and black SUVs slipping around alleys in Boulder? I want to know what is going on.

Absolutely. But no question they are much better in short order under Babers.
I watched the Clemson game and they played them even AT CLEMSON. They are an impressive team, again, given the context of where they have been for years. But it's also easier to go from crap to competent. It's not any guarantee that he can be a superstar, but I sure like some things about him.
