CU officially hires Mel Tucker as new Head Football Coach

I said it earlier, but so excited about ADRG bringing SEC quality football to the Pac-12. Not that I like that 'culture', but the football and the quantity of players from east of here is above where the Pac-12 is.

Colorado is the furthest east of the Pac-12 schools. So, we're closer to where Tucker has recruited from. Great opportunity to explore and recruit from more and fertile territory, than just Texas, etc. We've gotten great recruits from Florida. Get players that want to come west.

Not only this but is West Coast recruiting really needing to be a top priority? I get it is important but the rest of the Pac12 is doing it and the conference as whole is not doing so well on the field with these recruits.

This is another reason that we have to have a smart OOC schedule, and we are in great shape with the Georgia Tech game coming up!!! Nebraska and Colorado State are albatrosses around our necks! Cute little rivalry games that provide us with absolutely no recruiting value. Swap them out for more games against schools like Vanderbilt or other decent SEC or ACC opponents to create challenging but winnable Southeast games.

what really makes me feel good about this hire - Reading about Coach Mel, he has lsu, tosu, alabama, georgia, the nfl all in his past. That is some serious programs to be involved with. Like I read earlier in another thread by one of You AllBuffers - his resume looks way better than HCMM and the great HCBM when they were hired.

Swap out the Nebraska game? You can just stop talking now; you’ve lost all credibility.

I picture Eliot interviewing to keep his job as the shortest conversation ever.
“I see here you allowed a run first quarterback to set an FBS record for rushing yards as a QB after coming in as a backup. That same run first quarterback then proceeded to throw on you for 350 yards and 5 td’s the following year. Thank you for your time DJ, I will reach out when a decision has been made.”

I can see them keeping a few of the staff that are under contract as a way to save money and bring some continuity to the team; as this will also help pay for increase comp for a new OC, etc.

Bernardi is not under contract next year so no conversation needed.

The ones that are: Chev, Adams, and Drew Wilson all are signed thru 2020; so this is why keeping Chev on staff makes sense both financially and from recruiting pipeline standpoint. That doesn't mean he stays as the OC. Not sure you can make a case for Adams or Wilson as both of their areas were the most glaring weaknesses: so we just have to eat a bigger buyout on them.

Roper as QB coach, Drake at DL should get consideration; Brown and Ambrose depends alot on how they fit with Tucker (a former DB and DB coach before getting promoted to DC) recruiting process, and his scheme.

Tucker should already know what to do with Eliot as they both coached in the SEC for at least 2 years together; 2015-2016 (Tucker at Bama/UGA and Eliot at Kentucky) and James Coley (Georgia's Co-OC) worked with Eliot on the same staff at Florida State under Jimbo Fisher.

Hagan will be interesting as he is a Buff legacy and has survived several staffs now. If they find a role for him might depend upon how he adapts to HCMT's recruiting vision/process more than anything else.

I actually think the two easiest decisions for Tucker are to get rid of Bernardi and Hagan. Those are two positions that are recruiting dominated and should be easy to upgrade. If you put together a list of those you would like to keep in order I think it goes.

1. Chev (WR coach only)
2. Drake
3. Roper
4. Els
5. Brown
6. Ambrose
7. Eliot
8. Adams
9. Hagan
10. Bernardi

I don't think some of the younger people on here realize just how well we recruited under McCartney and Neuheisel. We weren't taking anyone's leftovers. It's hard to find lists from back then but I came across this page where a guy compiled Allen Wallace and Tom Lemming top 10 recruiting rankings from 1992 through 2001. (They were two of the biggest recruiting gurus in the days before Rivals/Scout/247.)

https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/sea...e-recruiting-rankings-from-1992-20-t4620.html

Here are our top 10 classes:

1992 - #3 (Salaam was in the class.)
1995 - #9
1996 - #9
1997 - #5

I'm pretty sure we were ranked 11 to 25 in all the other years. With our facilities there is no reason we can't get back to having top 25 classes every year with some top 10s sprinkled in. All it takes is the right staff and a couple of winning seasons. RG was here as the recruiting coordinator when we were pulling monster classes. He gets it. He's hired a head coach who gets it. I am as hopeful as I've been in a very long time that we are truly on the right track.

It's about the coaches more than its about the facilities. It's about the player becoming convinced that this guy is the best path for me to the NFL. The right guy puts us potentially back in that game again.

Back then McCartney capitalized on the fact that UTexas, Texas A&M, USC, and to a lessor degree UCLA were all going on a decade of being seriously mediocre.

Neu could recruit, no doubt, but my god he stunk on Saturdays sometimes. Also, for a QB coach he was pretty bad developing the QBs he recruited and instead relied on Detmer (McCartney), Hessler (local kid), and Moschetti (JC transfer). You could see the cracks in the facade when McCartneys kids had all graduated...

His teams also lacked discipline, way too many penalties. Even in the 10 win season, the team under-performed.

Uhhh yes it is. When this thing is really rolling, we're getting talent out of TX/LA, California, and the islands (Washington right now dominates recruiting in the state of Hawaii). If Tucker or whoever he might bring from UGA out here (heard Dan Lanning as a possibility) can leverage their connections to get a couple kids out of the southeast a cycle, great-but that can't be a priority.

Hagan (and this is a guess) would shift to within another role in the AD. Roper coached at South Carolina before coming here-I'd think MT knows him and would have an idea with what he'd want to do with him.........I think we're all fine with Roper as a QB coach, but given the consensus with respect to Chev's position (he needs to move back to WRs/RC)-I'm not sure that makes sense. Bernardi and Adams (who I think RG may have already dumped-he's the only coach on staff who has removed the CU stuff off his twitter page) are obvious. I'd think MT would look to bring in a new S&C guy.

Defensively-I think it just depends on how they all mesh with what Tucker wants to do.

One of the VIP's on the Georgia board made a comment about money, and said:

"He will be in the $4,000,000 range"?
I had a feeling that one of the tools that RG may need to use is a solid offer.
We are playing with the big boys now!
If Scott Frost can get $5,000,000 a year, then someone like Tucker should be able to at least ask for $4 mil
I’d be shocked if we’re paying him $4M. I believe that would make him the 3rd highest paid coach in the league and would put him ahead of Wittingham, Leach, and Chip Kelly. Seems like more than we would need to pay for a first time HC, but we’ll see. My guess is he’s just over $3M per.

I'm not as down on Hagan (or as high on Hagan) as most folks.

In general, I just want the new HC to consider him and others but approach it that there are no sacred cows.

And that followed him to Washington and UCLA; so proof-positive that it was him.

I hate to live in the past but if ever we could undo a decision on a coach (even Hawkins/Embree) I would undo the Slick Rick as our HC. Who knows, maybe the dynasty would have kept on if Hankwitz or Simmons got the job instead and we never would have had the slide into Hawkins/Embree territory.

Yes and no-with what Oregon has going on, most guys should be able to get enough talent to be consistently bowling there. I also think ours were a liability when we made the conference change, and RG has addressed those already. At this point, you're correct though. Oklahoma was down back then too-Switzer got them into NCAA trouble and they made two bad hires during the 90s in Gibbs and John Blake.

Only because Bernardi won't get a conversation. That will just be a hopeful look at Tucker from down the hall responded to with a raised eyebrow and shake of the head.
I'm picturing something more like this

I agree with Your list to the T, except adams shouldn't be on it at all. adams needs to be gone. Maybe keep Hagan in a paper pushing position out of loyalty (if it doesn't effect other hires). bernardi should be in the same car as adams leaving Boulder C Ya.

Chev stays on as WR coach, Roper as QB coach, and I wouldn't mind seeing Els stay either. The LB recruiting and coaching has been very good.

The only way I see Roper staying as QB coach is if Tucker is somehow able to bring McGee from UGA and give him the OC job (unlikely). Otherwise, he has to find an OC that is probably also the QB Coach.

Yeah, I'm ok with that. I was more just stating what I would like to see and who I feel has earned the right to stick around.

The love for Drake confuses me. He seems like a great guy and decent coach, but our DL recruiting this year sucks.
