Last year, many assistants didn't move until after the early signing period. I think that may become the new normal.
True. There does appear to be a bit of an unwritten coaching rule that's developed that you can look around, and even negotiate, but you need to get thru the ESD before bolting if you want to stay in good favor. That's been a general observation. But there's also plenty of exceptions to it.

Retained 4 members of former staff, and now looks like he has hired two under qualified Coordinaotrs, neither with any west coast ties. Yes, we have 4 hires to go, but this has gotten off to a n extremely lackluster start. And all the while, it’s takibg way too long.
I’ll debate your underqualified comment in JJ. Back it up.

One year as an OC at a meddling P5 school. That’s all the backing up I need to do. Throw-in no recruiting ties in our footprint.
Man, if you ignore everything else he's ever done, his resume really does suck! Now compare it against every single OC we've had since the original Coach mac was hired.

I feel like I’m taking crazy pills here. JJ is, on face, qualified to be a P5 OC. The fact is that he’s the only OC that CUs hired in ages that has ANY OC experience at the P5 level, and also probably the only one with more than a couple years as an OC at the FBS level full stop. Off the top of my head I know that , Chev, Bienemy, Kiesau, Helfrich and Watson were first time coordinators, and Lindgren had a couple of years at SJSU and NAU combined. That takes us back 18 years. Not sure if I can remember who was before Watson.

Re: Tyson Summers

Pump the brakes on the hate train. CSU's defense hasn't been as good since he departed for Georgia Southern. UCF won 9 games in 2014 as well when he was the DC there as well. Given that he has coached at Georgia Southern (heavy option run team for a long time) for a number of years, this would work well with Jay Johnson's offense.

Georgia Southern moved up to FBS football in time for the 2014 season. You need to consider the transition since the 2014 recruiting class would be the first one after they announced the move. That means changes related to recruiting and many things so the rough stretch was bound to hit in 2016 season and that is why the coach before Summers left for Tulane...who in their right mind would want the Tulane job? Keep in mind that FCS scholarships are capped at 63 per team and with the move up to 85 scholarships, you are not going to have that many experienced players. Summers didn't endear himself to the Eagle fanbase by trying to move away from the option offenses that they are well known for. Guess what? Stuff happens.

I like the Georgia Southern connection given their long time connection with the option and run game. Summers can help find the future QBs & RBs as well for Johnson.

I will concede that moving to the spread and an Air Raid variant as well might have not worked out while Utah does the same things that CU used to do in the past and has had more success. Going back to that could be what CU needs at this point.

Weak sauce.

Record setting O at UL. Substantial improvement at Minny. Got Leidner to play well and score vs B1G competition (he was a stiff). Energetic teacher/technician on field. Liked by Smartt and Chaney. Trusted by MT. Integral for UGA move to gun. Schemed packages for Fields. Cerebral. Has watched a lot of film recently. Knows trends in Ds and how to create advantages. Reportedly whispered in Chaney’s ear when analysts were allowed in the booth. Knows how to create space and numbers in a balanced O.

Your recruiting footprint downside has already been discussed under what OCs do and don’t do.

we're going to start pulling bluechips out of georgia, florida, louisiana, alabama, and texas like we're boss of the sec.

kidding aside, let's see how this rolls. we have a hc who is on the road already recruiting guys that he thinks fit. i think we're going to be good. and if we get a handful of kids out of the sec every year (which i think we will), then we are going to start to build this thing back up.

the p12 is like a lovely peach orchard. and those lovely peaches are ripe and ready to be picked. and there is no fence around the orchard. take what is ours.

He's the most qualified OC in 20 years. There is no debate about that. He has improved his offenses each year at Louisiana and Minnesota. From all we have heard, he was very integral in Georgia's offense and improvement. There can be some questions raised once the staff is finalized, but I don't think this is one of them.

ShaDon Brown - C - Cardinals
Louisville hired former Colorado DB coach ShaDon Brown to serve as safeties coach.
Brown spent the last two seasons on staff at Colorado, but was not retained by new HC Mel Tucker. Not out a job for long, though. Prior to his time with the Buffaloes, he held positions with Army (2016) and Wofford (2011-15).

Congrats to Shadon!
Good luck

I guess this means we can announce a DB coach soon.

I would like to see a lot of official announcements start rolling out right about now, since he is now known as OHCMT (Official Head Coach Mel Tucker)
He is legitimately in charge and can now put his fingers all of it.

My dream list of a coaching staff, did not include any analysts.
It looks like UGA analysts may be coming on board for both our coordinator spots and the OC is the most experience OC we have hired in years. It is taking me sometime to come around to this.
I have watched highlights of Minny and ULL from when OCJJ was their coordinator and the offense looks effective, and I did not see a single bubble screen. I am getting more excited about OCJJ.
It is funny Summer's resume (previous HC and DC) is better than Lanning's for the DC spot, but my initial reaction is disappointment with this hire. I would be more excited about getting Lanning here right now, though Summer may prove to be the better hire.
Tucker needs to nail the final four spots. 1 great OL coach and 3 great recruiters for our footprint.

The point of getting Lanning is that he's a great recruiter, for a position we don't need the most veteran defensive mind. I'd be shocked if he got more than a rather meaningless Co- title and a raise at Georgia.

all kidding aside - we need to start hearing about some AC hires. Is Katy staying on? Are we replacing some of our analyst? since we seem to hire other team analyst. Where are we with strength and conditioning coaches?

Agreed. I hope Tucker keeps going after Lanning as the DC. We could double his current salary and I’d still be OK.

I've always been a supporter of Brad Bedell. I do start worrying that it's a little much with him, Chev and Hagan all on the offensive staff.

Should I have that worry? I mean, it's not like having played and GA coached at CU should be a negative on someone's resume.

Two worries for me:

1) Diversity - I’m risk averse so I see concentration risk in having at least 30% of staff (way higher when limiting to offensive side) hailing from CU.

2) Accountability - Assuming (and I don’t think this is a big assumption) these guys are friends, they’ll probably have each other’s backs and will be less likely to challenge each other like they would otherwise.

I really wanted to add recency bias as well, but I’ve got to let that Embree **** go.

i think the way to look at sentimental hires is to first consider them absent the reasons for the sentimentality. we went full-bore the other way with the embree staff and that shows the worst that can happen. it is good to have someone around the program who has lived it as a player. we don't need to staff with that as a prerequisite however.

usc would have about umpteen more national championships if it didn't insist on trojanizing the department and coaching staffs.

This last sentence kind of turned me on, stop that!
