2018-2019 Coaching Carousel..

Doesn’t really seem like cristobal was okay with a coach not giving a flying duck about recruiting.

Word from Oregon fans is that Leavitt was desperate to be a HC and didn't take it well when Cristobal got the job ahead of him.

Oh I’m sure that’s part of it but he was absent for large portions of their recruiting visits and you can’t pay someone 1.5 million to just be a DC

I'll bet he tries to go back to the NFL if he doesn't take a year off. I don't see Leavitt taking an analyst job.

Oregon can.

I suspect this had more to do with the Ducks mediocrity on defense than anything else. He was paid to elevate their defense. He didn’t.

I also suspect the internal promotion is a move of necessity, as there aren’t a lot of P-5 DC’s just sitting around waiting for the call to come in from Eugene.

I disagree that Oregon can. Especially with a coach like cristobal who knows how important that aspect of the job is. This isn’t usc where there is enough talent to fill your roster within the surrounding counties.

Their defense got better but nothing crazy. It can’t be about performance though as he would have been fired a while ago. Probably more about conflict as we saw here with mac.

Point being Oregon has enough money to do whatever it wants. The problem wasn’t Leavitt’s recruiting or lack thereof. It was that his defenses were mediocre at best. They spent big money to bring him in. His recruiting accumen wasn’t a surprise to them.

The problem is he doesn’t recruit and his defense was mediocre. That still doesn’t explain waiting until now to move on from him. And I’m sure his recruiting was still a shock to people up there, or atleast the degree to which he didn’t give a **** especially after cristobal was elevated instead of him. There were pictures of the entire coaching and support staff on official visit weekends and he wasn’t there. That is beyond crazy no matter what you expect.

I do not think it boils down to one thing.

1. He is hard to work with because he thinks he should be a HC. People ripped MM for not "making it work" with Leavitt, but that always struck me as one of the lazier criticisms of MM. Maybe Leavitt is just an asshole?

2. Recruiting was a clear emphasis under Cristobal. Oregon signed its highest ranked class ever this recruiting cycle. If one guy is not putting in the effort, it shows.

3. Mediocre results on defense are not enough to overcome the other two issues.

They signed their best class ever and still fired him?

Because he doesn’t recruit?

Sorry, that doesn’t make sense to me. They clearly have enough good recruiters on the staff. What they needed from Leavitt was not recruiting. What they needed was him to take the athletes that the Uber recruiters got and do something with them.

I can buy into the notion that he’s just an asshole and Christobal didn’t like having him around. I will maintain that had his defenses been better, he wouldn’t have been fired, regardless of what Christobal thought of him. Maybe his constant wandering eyes retarded his ability to perform the job he had. I can buy that, too.

But he wasn’t hired to recruit.

I can buy into the notion that the other coaches were pissed at him for not chipping in on the recruiting trail. If his defenses were better, it wouldn’t have mattered. His mediocre defenses were why he was fired. His personality and recruiting were secondary considerations.

This is all pure speculation on all our parts. None of us know for sure. My contention is that he was fired because he was not producing the kind of defense that they felt $1.5MM/year should produce. Recruiting was a contributing factor, but certainly not the deciding factor.

I am saying it all matters.

Oregon did not want to fire him because there options right now are clear downgrades. Mediocrity on defense might have actually been okay without the other stuff.

Bad blood. Destined to fail. Egos involved, especially once Cristobal got the job and Leavitt spent the last few months chasing CU, KSU and USF. Not meant to work no matter recruiting, D, whatever.

Egos.

I'm just shocked, shocked that Elite Coach Jim Leavitt didn't get an interview for a head coach position got unceremoniously dismissed from his job as a DC.
Deeper than that, they ****ed him by waiting until all the jobs were filled before firing him. Awesome, awesome, awesome planning.

I think this is a good landing spot for him, he will connect better in the NFL. I feel bad for Wyoming though as they are a nice thorn in CSU's side.

Addition by subtraction for Wyoming. Chris Strausser (at CU under Talkins and with the Broncos the last couple years) is their OL coach. Captain Andrew Luck might need to watch his back in 2019 though.
