Mel Tucker leaves CU for Michigan State

It’s an overreaction to me because this goes along with the territory of big time football with desirable coaches. If we actually start winning, there will be overtures and meetings. It’s job of the AD to continually recruit/retain our best coaches.
Entertaining an interview (if that’s what happened) after his first season as a HC where he had a losing record is unusual.

People have to justify

Hold on tight, you are not going to enjoy the ride when the Buffs start winning if you are already so squeamish about having other programs want your coach.
What part of “Just so we’re clear, I don’t think anyone is bothered that other schools have interest in coach Tucker” was confusing to you?

This thread is astounding. I can’t imagine what y’all will do when we have a winning season and other schools talk to Coach Tucker and his agent.
Different. He said he was here for the long haul and then we thought he might leave after one season. If he turns us around and then leaves after 6 years fine

the denial got issued. that is what mattered. the commitment was reaffirmed. that is what mattered.

i do not believe that the die hards here, waking up to the reported news that their 5-7 first year head coach who just finished his first full recruiting class was "going to interview" for the msu job, "overreacted."

this **** moves fast sometimes. if he wins here, programs are going to take a run at him. that's life and hopefully we will match if we need to. if we don't, then at least hope the program is winning and stable if he leaves.

this timing was really bad, across the board. this is quite certainly the best possible outcome for the program. so, take it as a win and move on.

If we have a winning season next season, more contact will happen. This is part of the deal.
When we win next season is what I'm sure you meant. People are really going to freak then, really glad twitter wasn't around when Mac was coaching. What a great day Buffs cut down the trees and coach Tucker said he isn't going anywhere. You good after Clemson let us down.

Of course.

That's not what you said though. Which fanbases are used to interest in their HC after one season?
Those with low salaries, poor assistant pools and tough admissions?

I expect this will provoke change.

I guess we’ll see. If this was a bogus story from the start then you’re probably right. If this is a sign MT already has a wandering eye for some reason and will be chasing other jobs every offseason then it’s probably not a long term relationship.
Except that if it was bogus from the start, it should have been quickly quashed, especially with RG being right there.

MSU is in an unusual situation. Dantonio, seemingly, waited for a bonus in January and then quit the day before signing day. So their search was going to be, and has been, unconventional. Their list of prospective coaches was limited by the timing and they started looking for connections and positives under rocks. Tucker was, according to an anonymous source, in their top 3. If Dantonio retires after their bowl game, is Tucker in their top 25?

A first time HC with a 5-7 season nonetheless. That is the strange part and anyone trying to downplay it or chalk it up to “BBF” doesn’t get it.
You hire, and pay, based on potential. He was a very reasonable second tier choice for MSU, especially if they called Saban, given their unusual circumstances.

Just by his flirting with Texas, Saban doomed Bama to lose their recruiting power and that explains why they are no longer a college football powerhouse.
Big Jim and Hawg1 = Legends in their own minds!

What did this board do for cheap entertainment before they came along?

RG and MT handled it like big time football pros. It looks like it will take some time for a few of the fans to catch up.
This.

I don't want to make this into something that's going to cause people to take sides or dig in. We are all on the same side here.

But people have got to wrap their heads around the fact that if we're swimming in the deep end:

- Other schools will try to hire Mel Tucker away
- Other schools will try to poach our assistants
- Many of our recruits will be playing up the drama during their recruitment and other schools will be trying to poach our commits

Don’t do that. You will get clumped in with me and Big Jim. Maybe Manhattan. Your reputation is too good for that.

Mark Johnson just said on KOA that Tucker was still with Rick George on the west coast so I'd say no interview happened.

I heard late today from some well placed sources (but 2nd hand) that Mel did interview, and that RG and MT had a bit of a public spat.
Could certainly have been done while in California.

After 1 year, if true, that suggests an issue. Sugar-coat if you want.
