Mel Tucker leaves CU for Michigan State

- Florida to Ohio State
- Florida State to Texas A&M
- LSU to Miami Dolphins to Alabama
- Colorado to Michigan State

One of those isn't like the others.
Who are the OCs/DCs who got a HC job and stayed there 8 years? OK, 5.

David Shaw, Chris Petersen, Kyle Wittingham, Paul Chryst, Kirk Ferentz, Mike Gundy, Gary Patterson, Pat Fitzgerald, Mark Dantonio, Dabo, Mark Stoops, Derek Mason, Pat Narduzzi, Matt Campbell

Outside of Dabo, none of these guys are at programs that should be viewed in a clearly superior light to the potential CU has as a program, and that's probably even true for Clemson at the time Dabo took over.

I see no reason why HCMT could not retire from CU!
IF he has us competing for PAC12 Championships and that would put us in the NC contention.

Of course not, but he has gone out of his way multiple times to say that he had chances to be a HC in the past and ultimately waited 22 years for this opportunity because there are stepping stone jobs and destination jobs and he views CU as a destination job. He wasn't directly asked about that; he volunteered it unpromptedly, so while I am not naive to the reality, I don't think it's crazy to take his word at face value and believe that he isn't planning to jump to something bigger and better after 1, 2, or even 3 years.
I think he can look at CU as a destination job and have every intention of staying here until retirement without it being hypocritical to entertain other job offers. All I ask of CU is to make this job as attractive as reasonably possible with budgets, commitment and compensation. It should take a life changing offer for a coach to choose to leave.

I completely agree, but that's also why this specific instance had people a little testy. A blue blood or top 3-4 SEC/BIG or top 2 ACC job would be one thing, but one season in and Michigan State is a little different, especially after one season.

Define DESTINATION and all the factors that play into it?

1. Hometown
2. Home School
3. Paycheck
4. Historical Success
5. Recruiting
6. Admissions
7. Quality of Life
8. Taxes
9, National Perception
10. Winner

College is what you make it, if you are THAT type of coach. Colorado is solid on 4, 7, & 9. Could get improvement on 3, 5, & 10. Manageable on 6 and 8. For MT it is not 1 or 2. His ultimate school has to be WISCONSIN, which probably would cover almost all of these. I do not see another job that sways him in the meantime unless we or RG just screw him over on improvements, but they have the train going down the track the right way.

We are not solid on 9 anymore. We haven’t been since about 2004. When enough time has passed that current recruits have not seen a CU conference championship, your national perception is poor.

No we are not as solid anymore, but we were a power that can be referenced by video or other means. I would agree that it is not at all where it needs to be, but your point about current championships is more covered in #10, and we sure as hell gotta do that for the next 4-5 years

I am more concerned, long term, about his comment that he is committed to the "build". That can easily mean he is here on an interim basis and using this as a stepping stone (build CU up and leverage that for a big pay day). It would have been better to see his response be something like "I am dedicated to CU long term" (not just the build).

It can easily mean that he is building up to a Pac-12 Championship and then leaving. It can easily mean that he is building up to a National Championship and leaving. I can easily mean that he plans on building it up to a sustainable level of excellence for the next number of years until he retires. I can easily mean...whatever you want to imagine it means.

Neuheisel said he wanted to be the JoPa of CU. He said what you want Tucker to say and left for a "have" after four years. It doesn't matter what they say as much as it matters what they do.

I'm a big "control what you can control" guy.

CU cannot control that its coach gets offered and cannot control how good other jobs may be.

What CU can control is how good its job relative to other situations. That's where I'm focused. If CU takes care of its business and someone makes a questionable decision to leave, then we'll attach a great coach as a replacement and march on.

At what point are you anticipating "The Build" to end in Tucker's mind?

I keep coming back to it, but I think a lot depends on your definition and understanding of "interview". I've often wondered how an "interview" for such a job looks like anyway as coaches have a significantly more public resume than most other employees and I therefore think that the hiring party most of the time has a very good idea of who they want before they talk to a guy and it mostly comes down to how they mesh when they sit down with each other. If they were in Boulder I'd think he agreed to a meeting, but that very well may have been out of courtesy and respect for MSU and Dantonio and may have been a catch-up chat more than what most people would call an "interview".

Interview in the sense of one of us interviewing for a job where we'd go to the office? No. Was there some contact between MSU and Tucker or did he take a call out of respect for Dantonio? More likely.

He's got one year as an HC with a losing record under his belt. If he didn't have a couple years as a GA there and have ties to Mark Dantonio, he doesn't get a call about that job. When you have a job open under the circumstances theirs did (and don't want to promote Mike Tressel=the internal candidate), you start with the guys who have ties to the school or the former coach in an effort to keep some semblance of continunity.

This is Mike Bohn level

I think Dantonio looks worse than the AD for this. Never let a retiring HC pick his own replacement. Also, once a coach has decided to retire he has already checked out in a lot of ways and you know that your recruiting at the very least is going to suffer.

Dantonio did MSU a favor by resigning. The issues he has created and exacerbated will be hard to recover quickly from, though.
