Scrimmage Notes (Long)

After seeing them scrimmage today, I have my hopes up. I dont think anyone is going to be able to run againsts us at all. i think West Va is looking more and more like a win with the speed we have at the LB position.

QB: Cody will be the guy come fall. Ballenger doesnt have the poise or experience to challenge him and Nelson doesnt seem to be the leader that we need. Cody got better at checking off his recievers and not following one guy the whole play. Ballenger played well, but never got any looks with the first team offense.

OLine: We will have a good Oline this year. The first team didnt allow any sacks and just a few pressures. Solder will not start at tackle, he will play at some point during this season but he wont get the nod against the Rams, IMO.

TE: Geer screwed us over. Devenny will have a good year, he had a great catch (TD) down the middle of the field. That will be where the TE's get most of their receptions/touchdowns, sending the WR's out and sending the TE down the middle.

RB/FB: Kai didnt play (no suprise), but Maurice Cantrell will be quite the FB this year. He can run/catch (short stuff) and block. This is the year to get excited about the running game. The 3rd play of the day Sumler took a screen pass about 45 yards for a TD. Lockridge, Sumler and Moyd will all have an impact in some way this year. I have no doubt that if Scott works hard he will start against CSU but we have a rotation of 5 running backs and each will get a few looks this year.

WR: Patrick Williams. He stepped up this year, he is going to be the WR leader this year, no drops today, instead he decided to catch anything withing 5 feet of him, on the ground, diving, if he plays like that the rest of the year he will not dissapoint. J Fly is now the one who will run the end around and ran it well today, he is still very uneasy about running deap into the corners (think about what happened last fall), but he blocks and catches very well. Simas will be the one who benefited from his RS the most. He will be the go to guy deep opposite Smith. McKnight catches anything. He is a very good possesion reciever and I look for him to catch the short stuff. Celestine will play very well but slide under the radar of most teams and that will allow him to have a few big plays.

Dline: I dont know if it was because they were told not to try and hit the QB or the Oline was doing a great job, but they still had trouble getting pressure on the QB. Like I said before, no one will be able to run against us. Conrad Obi I have a feeling will play in significant games this year, the kid is an animal and plays DE the way it was meant to be played.

LB: This is still an iffy position. Jones had a "sack" along with "smart" coming off the side, but we are really going to need a freshman step up (Mohler, Major...someone). Katoa was there but he was working the chain gang along with Kai. Marcus Burton, Jake Duren, Nate Vaiomounga, Mike Sipili and Josh Hartigan all were on the sidelines. Hopefully Cabral can do something about these kids.

DB: Hopefully Walters can stay healthy this year. He was missed at times today, his backup (Anthony Perkins) played well in coverage but struggles with open field tackles. Jimmy Smith will be a Wheatly-like coverage guy. He doesnt stand 5 yards away from the WR before the snap, he is on the line pushing the WR after the snap and covers very well. Gardner McKay will play on the other side and I feel good about him as well, we dont really play any teams this year that have stud WR's like OU did last year.

Special Teams: My, my, my. Dillalo will be the punter and when his line can hold back the defense he can boom his kicks, however, I have a feeling he will have a few blocked kicks this year. On the other side, I think we will block a few kicks this year, Simas blocked a kick and Jimmy Smith took it in for 6. Our field goal/PAT kicking worries are far from over. Aric Goodman missed an extra point (just missed, not tipped, blocked, just missed) and Jameson Davis has a leg that can kick it out of the endzone on kickoffs, but he accuracy is terrible. Dont expect Hawk's 4th and 4 gambles to stop.

On a side note, the no huddle seemed to work really well. I think the coaches have implemented just enough that they will use it well, yet have everyone on the same page. Also. John Hessler was there and he was pretty excited about this years team.

Awesome report...thanks.

Re: Scrimmage Notes (Long)

Also, I forgot to mention, there wasnt a single bad center-QB shotgun snap....good news, I am sure Sanders worked very hard on that!

Re: Scrimmage Notes (Long)

jj you da man! thanks for being the eyes for this far-away buff fan! so much to like in that report!!!!

If anyone has any other questions about the scrimmage, I took 3 1/2 pages of notes and didnt feel like writing every single note down, just ask away and I will do my best to answer.

You mentioned that TE may be weak... what about Deehan?

Does he have a chance to come to campus and contribute in a significant manner this fall?

I would say the TE position is wide open. I would expect Devenny to start, but Deehan has a great chance for playing this year. On a side note, Will Pericak, I thought he played some TE in high school as well? He could also fill a void at LB.

Dunno about Moyd but Hawkins has awarded scholarship to Cory Nabors, so maybe we'll see more of him.

Tell me more about Kevin Moyd. Will he finally get a chance to shine this year?

I dont think we will see to much of him. As far as I could tell, he was behind Sumler, and Lockridge. I would expect him to also fall behind Scott and Polk. He might just become a special teams player and possibly get some time in the backfield.

Great post.. I made about an hour of the scrimmage. However, the comments on no one running on us seemed optimistic to me. Several RBs found room and positive yards today, and this was the first scrimmage with some significant differences in offensive scheme. Also, while we have a monster of an o-line, we are still quite young there too. Hope you are right, but some strong run teams might be able to move the ball on us on the ground.

How 'bout the backup DT's - how did they look? The official web site also mentioned Obi but how did the other DE's look?

You have to think. We were missing 50% of our linebackers today and our All-American DT today (for most of the scrimmage) (Hypolite). Like I said in the other thread, most of the rushing yards we had were against the 2nd and 3rd team defenses. I really dont see many 100+ yard rushers against us this year, I cant think of a team we play that has a stud RB (Other than WVA, but they dont run up the middle, they run sideline to sideline).

As for the DT's and DE's. I think we are set defensivly for a while now, for some of the scrimmage they had either Jones or Smart playing on the LOS as a 5th lineman, basically a rush end. The DT's looked pretty good, Nicolas played really well today and the young guys Eugene Goree and Lagrone Shields were very good at plugging up the holes. I wouldnt worry to much about the run defense, we just have a hard time getting pressure on the QB. With Obi, he batted down 2 passes today (both against Hawkins). Anytime they would try and throw over Obi's head, he stuck his arm up to try and bat it down. It didnt matter if it was a lob or a bullet to the sideline, his hand was in the air trying to get in the way of the ball, he will be the player to watch in the next few years....maybe another Abe Wright?

What about Marquez Herrod? I hear is is looking huge, how did he look out there today?

I think Herrod will split some play time, if not take over totally, over Maurice Lucas. He just doesnt seem to mentally want it as much. He has the build to be a great all big 12 DE, but he just seems like he doesnt play as hard as he can. I think by the end of the year, Obi and Herrod will be the two starting DE's.

Who doesn't want it as much, Herrod or Lucas?

Interesting, did faatagi get many snaps at guard or did they hold him out most of the day? Also, I was curious about jalil brown, i think he can be really good.. did he play safety or corner today? Thanks again for the insight!

Faatagi played limited snaps at starting right guard. He didnt play the whole time with the first team, but the majority. Jalil played safety for the 2nd team defense and at one point he was rotated with the other safties (Anthony Perkins and Dykes on the first team, but played primarily on the 2nd team.

Cool, thanx. I think Goree is a real sleeper. He has the size and the tools, and he's learning behind a couple of really good DT's. Shields is kind of a surprise - I thought they would leave him at SDE, or maybe use him in a hybrid role.

Was Hudgins there or is he still doing rehab?

Re: Scrimmage Notes (Long)

JJ - First off, nice post.

When I drove past Reliant Stadium today, I was jonesing for Buffs football and told my daughter that we'd be back to watch the Buffs play a B12 CCG or Bowl game someday.

Second, what intel can you provide a out the PR/KR position. That's a mystery, and key position to fill.

Thanks

I didnt notice if Hudgins was there or not, sorry RDB.

Well Celestine fumbled (twice actually) on the same kick return, Josh Smith slipped trying to catch a punt. I think taking kicks will be McKnight. He is fast, holds on to the ball and best of all doesnt dance, he has a nose for falling upfield. Punts is up in the air, my guess would be McKnight also just because he has the experience (from when Mcbride got hurt last year). Or in the fall Rodney Stewert could win both jobs. But right now both positions are up in the air.
