Sorry it took me so long to report back....

QB: Once again this will be Cody's team. He checked down quite a few times and at some points looked agile on the run. 1 interception which was more of a great defensive play as opposed to a poor throw.

RB: I have a feeling Polk will redshirt. My depth chart would look like this: Scott-Sumler-Lockridge-Nabors. Today Sumler hurt his wrist, im not totally sure, he just had ice on it but I wouldnt expect anything serious.

OLine: No bad news from here. Solder practiced with the first team today and there were some occasions when the struggled when the defense brought the house, but I think that is an easy fix. Kai played today, and he was nasty! He played like an olineman in the backfield. Not once did he get worked out, expect big things from him this year.

WR: Simas was missing today, not sure why. JFly and Scotty both played very well and had some decent catches. Jason Espinoza will suprise some people this year. He isnt the biggest, but he catches very well, and moves very, very well with the ball. PW played very well today, one drop, ran great routes and was able to get good seperation, as did all WR's.

TE: I dont have as much of a worry as before. Devenny had a few key drops, and one fumble today but he also had two touchdowns. He will get the nod against CSU and it will be his job to lose. I do think he will split some time with Shannahan though.

DE: Great pressure, OBI. Thats all I have to say, he will be a force this year, the kid is a monster. There were a few times that Hypolite actually played end, im not sure I liked it but I doubt we see it at all this season. Herrod played really well today, and I would expect him to play quite a bit this season.

DT: Hypolite and Nicholas will be the core of our defense and Goree and Shields will be the 2nd teamers. All 4 played very well and I dont see any problems on the d-line this year.

LB: Sip and Burton played today, and Burton showed he really wants to be onn the field this fall. He was all over the field today, special teams, defense, everywhere. My guess for the starting LB's would be Burton-Sip-Jones. Jake Duren was the one who intercepted Cody and it was a great read to get to the open space and take the ball out of mid air.

DB: I am not nearly as concerned with the CB's as I am with the safeties. The starting CB's will still be McKay and Jimmy Smith. Chapelle played on occasion today but his size will really hurt him, he was matched up on PW and made Williams look like a star because of the height mismatch. Most CB's had good coverage and forced the WR's to make great catches. The safeties will be iffy this year. Dykes is a very vocal leader and played very well, his speed will hurt him this year. If Walters cant play Anthony Perkins will play in his place, he is a good cover safety but has trouble with open field tackles.

Special Teams: Kicking was once again a problem today. Aric missed a 40 yarder and made it and Davis missed a 24 yard field goal. We had a few blocked punts as well, we are going to strugle on special teams and I would expect a lot of people to hold their breath on 4th down all season.

Other: The no huddle seams to be working really well, I am just wondering what stops the opposing team from stealing the plays? Also, Katoa was once again on the chain gang this week. Why is he allowed to be around football, yet Riar Geer is not? Maybe good news for him this fall.

am i to read into what you are saying that the drops on the part of the center have dissipated (second week in a row)?

i like that. that was my most substantial frustration last year.

thanx again, jj.

The blurb on CU's official site talked up B.J. Beatty's play at OLB. How did he look to you? And did Sip look okay or was he kinda rusty?

I wouldnt expect any bad snaps this year. Sanders has worked very hard and every snap today was right to the QB. Cody droped one snap but it was his fault, it was a good snap.

Beatty played well today. I think we are very solid at LB even with what we have now. He plays like Dizon, he wants to be in on every play and throws his body around to make a tackle.

Thanks for the info. Did the offense (282 rushing; 416 passing) look in control, or was the defense more consistent?

What's the deal with the kickers? Was the weather/wind any factor?

Not a big deal with the kickers. Davis was 2 out of 3 with the miss off the upright. Neither missed an extra point and it was windy. He kicked off well as always. Do these guys have to hit every field goal to make you happy.

Kevin Moyd led all rushers, yet you didn't list him in your prospective depth chart. I have always thought Moyd could be great if he could just get a chance on the field. He is FAST.

Thanks JJ for the info. I wish I could be there but I had to spend some quality time with my future Buffs offspring. We will all be there next weekend though rootin' for OUR Buffs!!

Thanks for the update. I just read on Rivals that Simas was in California at a funeral so there is no reason to worry about his status.

Thanks again.

Relax killer. The kickers have been struggling this spring. And it wasn't that windy out there.

I think its a punishment. He's missed alot of practice because of his grades.

I heard Maiava has missed some practice this spring, so not playing much in the scrimmages and spring game is easy to understand. My comment about not playing 90% of the plays pertains to the upcoming season. I don't think much of taking a freshman All-American lineman, switching him to fullback, and having him as a sideline decoy. I saw enough of the coaches who made sideline decoys out of Bloom and Vickers.

My bad. I misunderstood you.
He did get some action today. He made some good blocks, and missed a few. But in time he will be a real weapon on offense. Maybe even score a few TD's.

JJ - Once again, Thanks.
Leaving Smart out of the projected starting LB list was a surprise. Any reason to worry about Smart?

Who got the INT?

How does the hurry-up offense look? Lots of shotgun?
Are there the same old misdirection? Any new plays?

The QB situation: Cody-Nelson-Ballenger? What about Black in the RZ?

Call me what you will. Giving up 700 yards of offense, even in a scrimmage, is no reason to be optimistic.

Still, that was with 121 offensive plays. What does a normal game produce for CU offensive plays? 60? 70? (Not answering my own question, I really don't know).

If it was 60 plays on O per game in real game time for the offense, then this is like 350 yards of offense.

Of course, if that is the case, the Slade can start bitching about what is wrong with the offense now......:wink2:

On the other hand if our offense had only managed 280 yards then the sky would be falling so to speak offensively.

I do have concerns myself about our defense this year. It sounds like Obi is the real deal but outside of that who is there up front that is going to make a significant increase in the teams sack totals and QB pressures?

I noticed a comment a couple of weeks ago that nobody would be able to run on us this year. How does our current backfield really compare with your average top 25 program? Really compare?

I have to rely on your updates because I'm 700 miles away and these are a couple of questions in my mind that you might be able to answer

One other, Cody appears to be "the man" again is he going to be able to see and throw over Miller, Solder, Tau and some of those other giants we are getting on the line?? Or is he going to not see a bunch of open receivers in an actual game scenario??

I'm gonna start calling you Sunshine and Jimmybuff can be Kisses since you're both so damn sweet and positive.

I don't think I have ever heard ajy of those two say somethingn positive. Probably two people who take the GAME too seriously and can't have fun and enjoy watching a team improve.

Serious curious question for you Col.

When is the last time you have seen the buffs play live wether it be practice or a game?

thanks

Last live game was the OU game in Norman a couple years ago. That's the unfortunate price of living 500+ miles away.

Of course, I was able to watch the Buffs give up 610 yards and 51 points to Nebraska on television. I was also able to watch the Buffs give up 598 yards and 55 points to Missouri. And, I was able to listen on the radio as Baylor rang up 465 yards.

I certainly hope the defense improves this year. It sounds like the offense is gaining confidence and momentum. I expected nothing less from Hawkins- his offense has always been his team's strong point. It is time for the defense to improve as well. I am not convinced that the coaches on the defensive side of the ball, other than Cabral, are ready to make this defense a contender.

A combined 5-11 in two scrimmages. Misses from 27, 29, 30, and 37. Hit every one? No. Consistency would be helpful. It would have been nice if one of the two had made a statement and taken over the job. Looks like we'll have to wait until fall

The only reason I left Smart out was because I see him replacing Jones on guaranteed passing plays. Smart is a great coverage LB and a great tackler but I think the LB's will all split time this year. We dont have just 1 solid LB like we did last year with Dizon, this year, we have 4 or 5 players who all are great in their respective roles, Jones-blitzing, Burton-all over player...etc. Jake Duran got the interception and he made a great play on the ball and came out of no where and grabed it.

The hurry up offense seems to be working really well. Every play this year will be ran out of the shotgun, but the offense seems to have a really good grasp on what they are doing. As for the misdirections, there were some slightly new style misdirections today that I like to call a reverse. Patrick williams would take the hand off and then pitch it to J Fly and the entire side of the the field would be open for him, I dont think he had less than 7 yards per carry today. I am very excited to see this in action.

I dont think black saw the field at all today, I think that the 2nd string position is wide open between Ballenger and Nelson, both are good QB's so they will have to battle it out in the fall.

People get on WR's for dropping a pass. People getting on the center for bad snaps. People get on defense for missing tackles. Those kids are here to play football. They are getting a free education to play football. Kickers especially, they have 1 job. Kick the damn ball through the uprights, I wont say its very simple because I know the majority of people cant do it, but when your a kicker at a division 1 school, you need to make your field goals.

The awesome thing about all this is most of those guys making good plays are walk ons, Espinoza, Black, Duren, etc.

Are there timing issues right now? More than just about any other part of the game, strong field goal kicking is predicated on timing.
