The 2020 COVID Coaching Carousel

Ryan Day staying or smoke screen? You decide (I think that cinches Urban to Jax)

With as well as Ohio State is going (although I hate OSU), if I were Day, I'd try to win a national championship or two and then move onto the pros. Absent, some scandal or collapse I think OSU has a good 3 year window to make the playoffs each year. Then you are 2 games away.

There was a pretty clear progression of the Washington program from 0-5-7-7-7-8 wins over his tenure not to mention the recruiting wins he had there. He also has OC experience under two of the best college coaches in our lifetime (saban and carrol). His career is completely different than MM and he is a totally different coach.
UW had not seen a fall off in recruiting before Sark got there, just that their team had quit on the head coach. The talent was there and he continued it, but it really wasn't a step function. Somewhere on these boards I'd posted the actual ranking by year before and after. I argued at the time that he took a talented team that was probably 7 win talent and got them to 8 in 5 years.

With that said, there's a good chance he's better now for his time at Alabama and maturity.

That’s not true at all though:
2005: 80.26 with 2 four stars
2006: 82.83 with 2 four stars
2007: 82.42 with 1 four star
2008: 85.77 with 5 four stars

2009: transition class 81.44 no four stars
2010: 85.73 with 7 four stars
2011: 86.25 with 4 four stars
2012: 85.40 with 6 four stars and 1 five star
2013: 87.22 with 7 four stars

that is a clear massive step up in recruiting. The 2005 - 2007 classes had 5 four stars but the depth of those classes was absolute garbage. The four classes before he took over ranked 11, 6, 8, and 6th in the pac 12 (yes I realize Utah and colorado weren’t in the league but didn’t feel like doing the math without them)

Curious if you looked at Scout which was probably more relevant in that timeframe. I don't see my work. But one thing I'll note is that Sark's average was higher than his predecessor, the predecessor (Willingham) was taking it up a notch and then Sark got smart and did what? He hired Tosh Lupoi and it really jumped!

Sark at least knows the value of recruiting and I would not be surprised to see him find Tosh or some other Superstar recruiting stud to help close the border in Texas.

I just did 247 which acquired scoot right?

Hard to keep track, but yeah.

I just don't feel like Sark was a great recruiter the first go around at UW. And if you buy into the fact that UW was not a dumpster fire in terms of talent on the roster when he got there (i.e. the zero wins was not reflective of their talent), then I don't think his coaching record at UW is all that remarkable. Certainly, it wasn't a 1-year wonder thing like Scott Frost at UCF, Sark at least had them upticking. They were decent, but I didn't see signs of a major breakthrough.

He then got really aggressive when he pulled Tosh from Cal (an alumni), so yeah, he gets it.

I think he has a chance to make them very very good quickly at UT, if he gets the right DC in place.

He wasn’t a great recruiter? His five years at a DoA UDub:

75th (woof after a winless season as new coach)
19th
24th
24th
18th

That’s pretty great if you ask me.

Talent or not, the team he took over went 0-12 the year before he got there. The fact that Sark turned in a top 20 class the year after that program went winless is a testament to his recruiting.

Recruiting is absolutely not the question mark for Sark at Texas. Build the right culture, develop consistency, and stay clean. If he can do those things, they can win big.

If that isn't a sign of a good recruiter, then nothing is.

I guess UA is going to have to hit the transfer portal hard for its next QB.

SEC money over B1G money?
Seems like move down
They worked together at UCLA. Could be that they are just good friends. Lea was given a big pile of money for assistants though so it is probably more money. He's been a DL or DT coach since '09, including 5 years at Wisconsin. Maybe he feels like he isn't getting closer to a coordinator position at Wisconsin so go try out a new staff?

I'm a big Jeff Grimes fan from his time at CU where I met him a few times. He has impressed at BYU and figured someone would swoop in as he is not a Mormon.

He impressed me when I met him here as a guy who'd be a great head coach someday. Great pickup by a team I hate though and it's going back home for Jeff and his wife (Texas), at least I know they both went to school in Texas.
