Vanilla Play Calling

I keep hearing the arguement that the vanilla play calling is because Hawk doesn't want to tip his hat to the likes of WVU and FSU. This arguement makes SOME sense, but I don't think it's right. Here's why:

Even if Hawk was keeping things close to his vest, you'd still imagine that we were at least practicing more elaborate stuff, right? If we're practicing it, why on earth was the defense so completely fooled and out of position when EWU ran that trick play yesterday? It was like they had never seen anything like it before...

I think vanilla playcalling goes out the window when you are losing 21 - 7 to a FCS team. I think we have seen what most of this offense has to offer

That's all fine, but if you haven't practiced the plays during the week, you shouldn't be running them during the game. And you know what... they still beat CSU and an FCS team with a vanilla offense.

On a side note... how do you expect to throw the ball deep when Cody didn't have time for the short throws?

It's not the playbook, it's not the playcalling. It's the players on the field, and the O-line, especially, that need to get it done.

Our play calling being predictable doesn't help the players either. I am not happy with the offensive line but if show absolutely zero outside running, the defensive line has one thing to do and that is bull rush our unproven guards.

Bullrushing our unproven guards seemed to work no matter what play was called... if they had called lots of deep passes, reverses and opened up the playbook, you would have seen a lot more 5 yard losses and you'd be bitching about a much worse set of circumstances this morning.

how about an outside rush behind our supposedly great offensive tackles with Darrell Scott. How about some passes to the tight end in the middle of field which are relatively safe plays? So you are happy with the play calling?

If it continues through the next two games against much tougher opponents, then we may have something to bitch about. But I'm not worried about vanilla game plans against 'weaker' opponents. I do think it shows an overblown sense of confidence in the talent by the coaching staff, which isn't at the point of a Florida or a Mizzou that you can expect to sleepwalk over a supposed 'inferior' opponent.

The biggest thing this team needs is an O-line that's played together for more than a game. I think as you see the O-line grow, you're going to see the offense do what it's capable of. (Which sill isn't near the level of the top teams but much better than the last two years)

Think back to two years ago to the debacle of an offense we had and be happy you can bitch about playcalling.

Not having devin head in at OG hurt but, i'm not letting people off the hook who sat here 4 months ago saying our freshman OG's were better than maiava anyway,no big loss.

WELL? Where are the results? Tuioiti is a beast, what's wrong with him? I heard how great behrens, daniels, and bahr were, how can they be getting bullrushed and out-played by div 1aa talent?

Like I said in another thread, there's no reason to hold anything back now. Open up the playbook and get the ball to the playmakers. And stop with the running on 95% of first downs.

i hear your point, but holy ****! is there a day in your life where you choose to be happy?

you have reduced yourself to nitpicking kids as a means to feel better about yourself. :wtf:

these kids owe you nothing. a zero win season is what they OWE you. how about start appreciating when they do something awesome?

EW had that play down didn't they. Almost the same play every first down for cu.

CU can't start off every series losing yds and have 2nd and 3rd and long.

I was happy with the defense but the offense is another matter.

Josh smith has got to see more plays in the passing game and yes, they doubled him a lot but we have other wr's who can go deep and run crossing pattern and posts.

The shotgun running game sucks IMHO, it's good for a guy like stewart but I think they are wasting scott and should line up in the I-formation every once in a while.

Problem is,I think the coaches are hell bent on the no-huddle and despite rushing for less than 100 yds a game will bang their head on the wall game after game to no avail.

I just don't want to see our young talent being wasted,we finally have it,put them in the best situation, get them the ball and use it.

FIRST OFF, I'M nitpicking the fans here who made themselves feel better by "NITPICKING ON MAIAVA".

I'm not bashing players, i'm calling out fans who said maiava would not be missed and our freshman OG were better.

If your going to make statements like this, then don't be whiny when they come back on you:thumbsup:.

This is a footbll message board, quit making it out to be a life thing. I'm plenty happy, just not about certain aspects of CU football.

Smith is still having trouble with route running at times. I watched him on some plays yesterday away from the ball and I think he has some major improvements to make in that department.

I think the shotgun running game can be effective, I just wish there would be more of a variety of formations. We also need to get a solid RB rotation established because it seems very sporadic at times. There were long stretches in that game where Stewart and Scott were not out there.

I also think the no huddle is not necessarily bad either because we're still learning it. There were quite a few plays yesterday where it looked like players were confused on substitution packages. That should go more smoothly as the season goes on. I would say that it wouldn't hurt to run some true hurry-up offense in the middle of the game once in a while. EWU did it a few times yesterday and it was fairly effective.

Overall, the coaches need to open up the playbook a little bit more and the players need to cut down on the mental mistakes. Cody's spike at the end of the first half, the troubles with the short kickoffs, and many other things like that. Hell, there should have never been a fumble on that punt return by Smith because he never should have fielded it in the first place (caught it at about the five yard line). I expect young players to make mistakes, but they can do much better than yesterday.

i am with you on kai. it sucks to have lost him. if anyone here criticized him play by ****ing play, it is news to me. i did see the opinion of some who felt that some of our talent could step up on making things as good or better given that he left. i see that as opinion and not nitpick.

as for nitpick, you named some puppies to be damn sure. MTM, behrens, behr, and daniels. you can kindly step the **** off of them because their purpose in life is not to make your life better.

this IS A FOOTBALL THING, and not your life thing. you have been projecting your life onto this team in sorting through yesterday, and it is time to stop.

good post. i see some of the sand has worked out of your vagina.

You can kindly step the f$#K off also.

It isn't some life thing which you keep re-hashing. I have a son with AUTISM that is my LIFE bigmouth, and i'm making a move out of colorado for the benefit of him for a great school in washington state.

CU winning or losing DOESN'T CHANGE THAT EFFING FACT, so take your self righteous BS to someone else.

I never said the players owe us anything, but the coaches owe us honesty not hot air and hype.

Another thing BLAISE, really, this isn't life or death? Thanks, I would have never known that I mean BEING A SQUAD LEADER IN IRAQ IN 91,I would have hoped I would have known what was life and had meaning by now, thank god you're here to tell the board.

Keep sticking your foot in your mouth, this is fun.

I hope I never see you posting on the War or bashing us being in Iraq, using your logic, the soldiers owe you nothing and it's not life or death right?

This is too easy

You guys still don't get it. The problem yesterday was execution. If the Buffs couldn't execute a simple run up the middle or simple pass plays, what makes you think opening up the playbook would have been any better.

If I'm Hawk and see they can't execute the simple plays, I'm sure as hell not gonna open the playbook and make it worse.

And to the FCS talent argument, EWU is one of the top FCS teams, most of those teams have D1 talent on the first string, give them a little credit, it's not like we were playing a bunch of scrubs. I'd go so far as to say EWU is actually a better all around team and has better talent than CSU. The only thing that separates them from D1 is depth, and that's a much smaller factor early in the season than it is late. If they were throwing things at TTU that Graham Harrel had never seen, you've gotta give that coaching staff a lot of credit too.

WE WON, get over it.

I agree to a point, but the playcalling was a problem yesterday. We were painfully predictable all game long. We ran on first down nearly every time. The lack of adjustments was what troubled me. Part of the reason our offensive line struggled in passing downs is that we were in many obvious passing downs (second and long or third and long). It makes life easy on the defense when you put your offense in big holes like that.

My vagina is none of your business.

holy mo, we have a buffalo version of mister bergis! mister bergis, i am going to call you out when you throw our kids under a bus. discuss to your heart's content but when you gleefully insinuate that they are crap, i am going to point out that just because you think you have it so hard in life, it does not give you the right to kid-bash.

Year 3 and when can't execute a run up the middle?

Who is accountable for that?

We have talent now,yet I keep hearing more and more excuses.Young, vanilla etc....

I find it amazing that it's year 3 and we are talking about not being able to run on EW.

The good thing is we won, and have 2 weeks to figure out how to run up the middle.

We have all this talent on offense, including the OL,grimes and company need to get busy the next 2 weeks and start executing and playing up to the hype.

so what you are saying, is your opinions are not to be questioned? good one.

Actually, I was jokingly hinting that I have a vagina. I see nothing in my post about not allowing my opinions to be questioned, but you seem to have an incredible ability to read a lot into what someone says in a given post so I will defer to you in determining what exactly my post meant. Thanks.

that is a point of contention. true. however, what makes you think that we would have sucess shaking it up with something new when we were struggling with the basics?

more a problem than calling run every first down was the fact that we were not creating lanes. indeed, scott often had to power through the first block well behind the LOS.

with csu, this was not an issue as our trenches held.

so is this TRULY a playcalling issue or an issue that our OL needs some work with a dee like that?

Kindly stfu, I didn't bash those players, one again I W..I..L..L.. S..A..Y...I..T...S..L..O.W..L..Y...

People claimed those 3 players were better than maiva,at this point and time would rather have maiava or 3 freshman? FACT, our OG play without him isn't as good as when maiava was in there to this point after 2 games. Maybe it will get better, but your so hell bent on saying i'm bashing them.

Seriously,gfy i'm done with you,you obviously don't have a clue and never will.

When the defense does not have to respect the pass for one third of your downs on offense, it is a problem.
