Vanilla Play Calling

When the defense does not have to respect the pass for one third of your downs on offense, it is a problem.

from what i heard byway of play by play, neither the defense, or the ewu announcers respected it (for the most part) the entire game.

the only thing they respected was our returns.

again i ask: is it truly a playcalling issue only?

I was at the game. There was downfield passing open all game. We missed on a couple opportunities and we hit on the long pass to Patrick Williams toward the end of the game, but it was there most of the game. But EWU quickly figured out (along with everyone else in attendance) that we had no interest in stretching the field. That allowed them to pinch up more toward the line of scrimmage and it directly affected our pass protection. So while it might not be solely a playcalling issue, playcalling is in fact a large part of it.

if they are pinching up and affecting our pass protection, then by nature the OL effectiveness is an x-factor. it cannot go both ways that the passing game was open all day, and that they prevented it at the same time.

i would be flexible enough to entertain that playcalling could have factored into it, a bit. but i see every reason to approach the problem by ensuring that we are solidifying our trenches first.

Well, we weren't running many deep routes so we took it away ourselves more than anything their defense did. The few times we did choose to run some intermediate and deep routes, they were open.
