Positives and negatives after WVU

Obviously a lot more positives than negatives in this one.

Positives
-We're 3-0 for first time since 2004
-Already halfway to being bowl eligible
-Speedy Stewart, a buck 66 on 28 carries.
-Good start and finish
-Pass protection, Cody had a lot of time
-crowd, one of the most electric games I have been to. Probably loudest since '01 fusker game.
-Goodman not choking like the WVU kicker. We have been blessed with the kicker position lately. Crosby, Eberhart and now Goodman have kicked clutch kicks. Anybody remember our kicking in 2002? Big 12 championship and Alamo bowls.

Negatives
-Still some stupid penalties.
-Had several nice drives going that we couldn't finish.
-allowing a lot on the ground.
-TACKLING!!! I could not believe all the missed tackles. Granted Devine and White are very talented, we still missed a lot when we should have had them.
-Cody needs to learn to get rid of the ball, or get out of the pocket when there is no one to throw to.

GREAT WIN!!!

I can't believe I'm going to add a negative after such a great game, but:

- DScott was largely responsible for one of Cody's fumbles. Cody moved Darrell to his right side, and then at the snap, Darrell went to the left to help out with pass blocking. The problem, is that a blitzer came free on the right side and Darrell never even saw him.

That said, you could fill a thread just with positives about Speedy.
- dude was hitting holes quick
- dude was running HARD (I'm not sure he ever fell backward)
- dude took some licks and bounced right up every time
- dude has a knack for finding an opening, even when the play is designed to go somewhere else

The throw to the flat that was getting stuffed every time on third down was killing me. I recorded the game so I'm sure in my drunken excitement I missed something but it seemed it was a designed play that went no where.

As thrilled as I was for the win, I am really bummed that our offense hasn't "taken off" yet. Every week, I expect the light to come on and it just hasn't yet. That being said, the offense is so damned young with so much potential!

Now FSU in JVille. They haven't lost there since 1989. This is going to be a real test.

Reason for offense not taking off:
2 out of 3 WR's = Sophmores (1 true)
4 of our starting OL (head did not start): Soph or frosh
QB: Soph
RBs (not a problem except in pass blocking): frosh.
TEs: only one true blocking/receiving combo TE (geer) who is ready to play. And he got hurt last night and only played a few downs after the 1st. As did Devenny.

Could our special teams coach pull his head out and tell J-FLY to quit effing fielding punts inside the 10 YARD LINE?

It happens once okay but when it keeps going on,something is wrong here,it's KILLING our field position.

Also, nix the east-west pass helf-errr watson. Throw the ball past the chains on 3rd and short, not straight across for a 1 yd gain.

NOW, Speedy and OL played much better,I-formation and j-fly caught a DEEP Ball FOR A TD.

cu-17-14 is VERY positive:smile::smile2::thumbsup:

I don't know. I thought the offense looked pretty good overall for how young we are. Our problem last night was stupid penalties and such that killed some drives. We could have easily had 3 or 4 more TD's last night with a little more experience.

I hope Darrell Scott takes Stewart's emergence as challenge. I think they could absolutely be an amazing thunder and lightning combo. Hopefully the coaching staff will find a way to get everyone enough playing time. Imagine next year with Scott, Stewart, AND Polk. How will opponents gameplan for that?

Scott and Stewart are two totally different backs. I think Scott is a more I-back, while speedy fits the shotgun better. I think Scott will come along like we all think. You can see it in him, I'm just waiting for him to bust a big one.

Positives: Stewart, duh. The guy had a coming out party on national TV in front of millions of people. You think the sweater vest in Columbus is kicking himself right about now? Coaching: we can argue play calling all day long. The fact of the matter is that players make plays, not coaches. We managed the game much better than WVA did. I also think we were better prepared than WVA was.

Negatives: One glaring one - 2nd and 10 from their own 1 yard line and they rip off a 15 yard gain. :bang: That is one of those defining moments of a game that is often the difference between winning and losing. I think there was something like 6 minutes left in the game at that point. Hold them there, get good field position, win the game with under a minute to play. Grrrrrrr. I just about had an aneurysm on the spot. While it didn't end up costing us the game, it very well could have.

couple not mentioned above:

Pro:
Team keeps improving week to week. Big step up from EWU.

Con:
Special teams kick/punt coverage. They were ripping off some big returns. We couldn't hold the contain and they got outside for positive yards.

Also, nix the east-west pass helf-errr watson. Throw the ball past the chains on 3rd and short, not straight across for a 1 yd gain.

This was my biggest complaint all night. WVU was doing it all as well. Throw the ball downfield already. :bang:

Great night for Speedy. Dude is already a stud. The smallest guy on the field may have been the toughest tackle. Scott needs to take his example, hit the hole quick, and not go down so easy. He really seems a step slow right now.

O-Line looked a lot better last night! Despite the 250 yards rushing given up, the defensive front looked good too I thought. Came up with some HUGE stops!

I dont really care that we gave up 250 yards on the ground, think about who we gave them up to? Devine and White, both stud kids who run a very, very run oriented offense and that is where almost all of their yards came from, on the ground. I am very proud of the way the defense played (with the exception that there were a few times it was frustrating we couldnt stop the run even when it was very obvious it was coming).

A couple of BIG, gnarley short-yardage stops against an experienced O-line. I know it's been said, but it bears repeating.

I don't think Scott goes down too easy. He gets yards after being touched. He is a little slow I think, but he's coming along.

Ok a couple of quick notes on at least two of those third downs Cody checked down to the flat becuase of either pressure or the failure of guys to get open down field. I know we are all hyper sensitive to the asinine 3 yard pass when you need seven (watson), but seeing Cody check down isn't all bad.

One of my good friends watching the game locally said hawk mentioned that scott's knee has been bothering him in the post game and thats part of the reason he didn't see the ball more, can any one else confirm that?

My only real complaint is that when Little-hawk scrambles he needs to be more careful with the ball.

Yep, on that 4th and inches, both Hypo and Nicholas pinched down on the center. They knew the sneak was coming and they blew it up.

Nicholas was a freaking animal last night. We are going to miss those two guys next year.

Ya, I agree. It's hard to remember that when you see Speedy fighting for every last yard he can get. Just read Lt.'s post about Scott having a dinged up knee, so I guess it answers that.

Stat of the game:

WVU was 3-13 on 3rd down and 0-2 on 4th down. :woot:

WOW...i knew we stepped up huge on 3rd down, but that's just insane right there!!!

I attribute it to the extra key I added to my keychain for the "key plays", that extra noise was the difference!:lol:

Again, I saw several times during the game, Cody continues to look at the play being called in from the sideline with a "I can't believe were running that play" look. Then the confusion sets in, and the O-line is like WTF are we doing? At one point, I saw Cabreal on the sideline signaling TO, and knowone was paying any attention to him. At one point in the 3rd quarter I snapped a picture of Cody standing on the sideline looking at a playbook or something and scratching his head with a deer in the headlights look.

This kinda stuff has to get under control before the FSU game and league play. Or it's going to come back and bite'em big time. I realize the Buffs are a very young team, but this seams like a simple thing to fix. OK I'm done ranting.

I can't believe no one has mentioned this...

NOT A SINGLE BAD SNAP FOR THE FIRST TIME IN RECENT MEMORY!

Positives are many. Beating a ranked opponent on national TV when they had the ball with 2:00 to go in a tie game was a BIG step forward for CU football. We haven't been winning these games in the recent past. But, starting last year (especially OU) and continuing this year, Hawk keeps our guys playing hard til the final whistle blows and we are winning games where we would have lost in the past.

That said, I hope the next step is to develop a killer instinct in addition to the never say die attitude. When we took over the ball with 6 minutes left I was hoping the OL and DScott would be able to finish the game there with a 5 minute drive ending up with 7. They did a good job of getting a couple first downs, but we did punt the ball back to WV with plenty of time for them to win it.

I'd also like our running game to become stronger between the tackles. Most of Speedy's big pick ups were when he got the corner and was able to make something happen in the open field. But, we are going to have to run the ball right at people if we want to get to the next level.

I was very pleased with the D. We'll see what they do when they actually have to play pass D for a whole game, but they looked strong and quick. They made huge stops on third and fourth and shorts on numerous occasions. Devine beat us to the corner on a couple plays, but the DBs did a nice job of limiting these runs to 10 yards instead of 60 and a TD. Great, great effort by these guys.

I agree about the killer instinct. Quite obviously, winning games such as the one last night is way better than losing and a huge step up from some of the stuff we´ve seen in the past, but my nerves would greatly appreciate it if we could wrap up games when we have the chance to do so. I think last night´s game was closer than it could or maybe should (although that sounds terribly spoiled) have been. I am more relieved than elated, as strange as this may sound, but I didn´t see the first quarter, so I guess that might have something to do with it.

Positive: Coach Brian Cabral.
When CU needed a big stop, Cabral marched himself and his skirt on to the field to coach up the defensive backfield. Whatever adjustments he needed to make obviously worked.
It sucked seeing Devine and White break off 9 yard runs all night. But when the chains moved towards the red zone, out marched the big Lava-Lava Kahuna with some motivation, advice, and magic. Bingo. WV's offense would stall. It was awsome to watch Cabral at work, developing the next generation of NFL line backers. He was in his element. Nobody, I mean nobody runs successfully against CU. This has been and continues to be a fact of Colorado football.

One positive that people have not pointed out yet. In OT, the Buffs simply lined up and stuffed the ball down WVU's throat. Maybe they had given up at that point, but it was hard not to be impressed. Had WVU made that FG, it would not have mattered. The Buffs were not going to be denied there. Both Scott and Stewart ran hard.
