CU has rejoined the Big 12 and broken college football - talking out asses continues

- commanded the largest media contract in college sports after expanding to 12
- refused to sell a percentage of its network to a media giant like the B1G did to drive distribution, avoid all of those infrastructure costs, and draw almost pure profit with little expense against it
- located its production studios in the Bay Area despite literally having Hollywood in your conference (or as an alternative, in Las Vegas which is low cost, in the geographic center of the conference, and is residence for many of the top event & showbiz people on the planet)
- located its corporate office in the financial district of San Francisco, one of the most outrageously expensive real estate & labor markets in the country
- located its football championship game in San Francisco with disastrous attendance which embarrassed the conference (later moved to Las Vegas, thankfully)
- refused to consider unequal revenue based on performance (like being picked up for national broadcasts or your regional PACN outperforming others) - which killed UT negotiations since the conference wouldn't give them extra for LHN among other things
- unbalanced the schedules by initially treating the CA schools differently by having them all play each other every year... but we're too dumb to promote other rivalries which could have been done from the start with 3 regional pods & a championship game of the 2 highest finishers overall at the end instead of divisions
- wasted tremendous resources and squandered current opportunities by pursuing Asian markets including conference games in Australia and China and by focusing on tech companies for media deals long before they were ready to enter the sports business
- moved to a 9-game schedule with FCS opponents vigorously discouraged, which resulted in 54 extra losses from conference games each year along with a higher probability of non-conference losses with most members ending up with at least 1 additional FBS opponent per year
- voted against extending an invitation to OU and OSU because while each were R1 neither was AAU and they would have reduced academic prestige of the conference
- voted against moving on Big 12 and G5 targets when the Big 12 was completely destabilized (I have no doubt that at that time it could have become a Pac-16 through UH, TCU, OSU and KU)
- never was able to negotiate a "Conference Challenge" in hoops with any other Power 6 conference
- allowed a corrupt Commissioner organization which manipulated referees, grifted from the conference, and stole from cable partners
- likely voted against adding SDSU and SMU after media companies said they saw value in making DFW and SoCal part of the footprint
- failed the PR and branding side of things so badly that the conference was a national punchline despite having CFB media allies in Klatt and Fowler from CU alone

Wilner was a cheerleader and water carrier for all of this.

When I keep telling ya'll the teams added will be SMU, Tulane, and Rice, ya'll laugh about value as if these schools Presidents give a damn. It's all about academic prestige and old money. The PAC is asleep at the wheel and I doubt they will wake up. Oregon, Washington, Arizona, and Colorado will be gone and their super rich and wealthy conference will be on Apple TV so you can watch it in Japan, Mexico, or America, you just can't watch it on cable no matter where you are at. Congrats Pac-12, you played yourself

There is some data I would love to see:

West coast donations per year before and after joining the pac corrected for win/loss.

Same for west coast fan/alums at road and home games before and after and correlated as a percentage so as to compare to alums in the b12 footprint

Rocky Mountain alums and fans road game attendance before and after and again correlated as a percentage of a total regional number.

Where did your whales come from before and after— broken down in lots of ways

And so forth.

The things that jumped out at me today from the talking points include: the mention and focus on time zones. The mention of fox and espn as brands and their linear reach. The acknowledgment of potential damage to their west coast base. The inability to recruit Texas and not do better in ca.

Like most or all of the west coast folks I am bummed but time will tell if we jumped too soon or whatever.

10. It feels like Yormark is actually DOING something where past B12 commissioners sat on their asses. The Rucker park B12 bball clinic last week, some crap in Mexico etc etc At least he is trying things even if they end up being fluff.

I think the next couple years of the new 4, the old 1 and whoever else is added should be a blast. Too bad you weren't here THIS year to send UT and OU out with L's.

On SDSU/SMU-I would give the Pac 12 schools a month. If they continue to dither (which I expect), I'd honestly add those two if I'm BY. Add them, and the last get out of jail free card Kliavkoff and co. can now play gets taken away from them.

LOL I love my Jayhawks. But also have one of my degrees from UW (was there when we won the championship - we would have KILLED Miami that year) but I try not to judge if someone ONLY has a degree from CU :)

In the Pac-12, that meant 10 votes on business issues from government entities overseen by politicians and managed by professors with the other 2 from private entities that experience the world as West Coast Ivies so think a business deal happens because others approach you with a bunch of money to get your name associated with the project.

So there was never a real world business sense, to the point where they saw the conference network as primarily a vehicle to televise all Pac-12 sports to celebrate its gender diversity and Olympic athletics excellence rather than featuring football to draw ratings and make money.

Usually I'd be in favor, but after I ride share a SmartCar back from my weekly Covid booster shot followed by nude yoga and THC massage and finish fulfilling my sacred trust as a pet guardian to a rescue of mixed parentage, my holistic life coach & spirit guide recommends that I hydrate and load up on pH balanced rain water with live probiotics along with a light superfood meal of açaí and Goji berries over quinoa gently dusted with Ka'Chava then relax by slipping into natural fiber, coexist PJs from a business I found that donates all its profits to Planned Parenthood and The Trevor Project while doing some light reading of The New Yorker under an environmentally conscious mood light to the sweet sound of a humpback whale soundtrack that donates to Greenpeace and PETA.

You know. Typical Thursday.

Could we make it Saturday? That's my cheat day and a grige or three sounds marvelous. It needs to be organic and locally sourced, of course. And I'll eat just about anything vegan and gluten free, so I'm easy.

My favorite part of this move is not having read or hear about “the PAC (in all caps)” like it’s a gawdam acronym. Of all the peeves in my life, this is probably the biggest.

Don’t pretend KU or CU wouldn’t be gone the first minute a BIG offer materializes. Until then, the Conference USA, erm, Big12 will be a pit, erm truck stop.

I don't see how SDSU is a realistic candidate for any conference now their exit fee from the MWC has gone up to $34 million.

I believe it was “unofficially“ known as the Pacific Athletic Conference in the 60’s which likely is the reason it is sometimes spelled in all caps.

This stood out to me too.

I think it all was about getting more exposure for Shedeur for his Heisman run in 2024.
 
It still amazes me how much GK bungled this whole thing and the P12 presidents & chancellors nodded their approval repeatedly.

Any word on an new chancellor for CU? PD still needs to get pink slipped for this too.
