Official CU vs. UCLA 10/28/23 Game Thread

You have followed Coach Prime more closely than anyone else on this site, I think. Why do you think he struggles to close OL in particular?
Because no one knows of/wants to play for his OLine coach. This isn’t hard. Have you seen BOB in any social media video since this thing started? Seen or heard of any recruit or player mention him?

Are some of y’all really so poor that you think it’s spelled “Louie” or is it just a bit?

Most big time programs have OL coaches who have coached at the P5 level and have been involved with the big time recruits at some point or another. We hired an OL coach who has almost exclusively coached at the D2 level with a few seasons at bottom tier G5

They don't give a **** about glamor in general and that's what we offer, glamor. Everyone offers five star food, coaching to a degree, fitness, health, etc. Everyone in the P5 and some G5s. But what we offer the most is glamor. We got Amazon doc, daily film reports from WellOff, on ESPN and FS1 because we are glamorous. That's what we offer that's different and unique. They don't value that as much.

And some that do, what do they value the most. A lot of skill guys and defensive guys came cause of Prime. We did elite in DL recruiting considering we didn't offer NIL. Just imagine we have NIL. We would have cleaned house.

With the OL. We just haven't did well. We lost Cameron Johnson to G5. We lost battles with multiple guys to G5s in the trenches. That wasn't a NIL, that was different.

It's hard to recruit OL. The best don't leave and they want stability when they do. Michigan got crushed by the NFL and replaced all 3 guys with high 3 and 4 star OL who fit their scheme. High IQ guys and they were heavily targeted by every P5. We couldn't even get those guys to wave at us.

The reason why I am hopeful is, we have 2 which at that time, even you guys doubted him as it seems no one watches HBCU football. This year, everyone knows he's the real deal. He's going to get OL who want to come since he's a top tier pick, they want that attention from the NFL. Glamor helps but now we also got NIL to close the deal.

It's hard to recruit OL. Everyone struggles with it. Everyone. Because you don't know who's peaked. Who's still got a lot of potential. Who can handle the playbook and their role, etc. You just don't know.

We struggled to win NIL less battles for Jatta. We had to take in a kid who had rape history as a walk on likely to land Jatta. That's how talent deficient we were and I don't think we realized it and even when we did, we missed on everyone. We literally offered every OL available. In HS and the portal. We just couldn't land guys. It was tough.

The OL is the hardest positions to recruit for. Bar none. But for Prime, it's extra difficult because what he does best doesn't always appeal to them. That said, CU has open spots, Travis Hunter, 2, and other really good weapons. We should have a lot of interest because players want to play with elite players and we got some of those guys.

The glamour part was my thought as well. You articulated that nicely - thanks.

Imo, it's because he underestimated the power of a NIL collective. Its obvious you need one to close on blue chip/ top transfers trench guys.
This is the big one. He won just about every battle for defensive guys and skill guys with even some battles being for NIL but the big trenches guys really was NIL battles and he either came close and lost or never had a chance.

I believe we will see him go extremely hard in the first week of the portal. Especially to land top tier OL. I am pretty sure they are watching film and scouting guys they would like that they might be hearing is thinking about entering the portal

This will never happen nor is it even being thought about but CU should build a small luxury condo complex and offer it as part of a NIL package.

It does but some posters trying to be funny.

Louie luggage.

Hand picked.

That's the case for 2, 12, 21, and others but not for the OL
You build from the inside out in football. If you can't block anybody, having a great QB is going to get you only so far.

This team's case in point. The skill upgrades have bounced this thing from what should have been a winless season last year to 4-8 or 5-7. Thats nice, but I want a hell of a lot more.

With any kind of OL play the Buffs QB and WR/RB talent would give them a chance against most teams.

I saw your comment about Jimmy Horn being a G5 caliber receiver last night. Hope you retracted it at some point. Horrible take.

We can be elite. We should have depth with the skill positions next year.

We gotta land a 5 star portal class like FSU and Miami did.

We got the best QB in the nation by a mile next year.

We got the best player in Hunter.

We can be elite but we need studs. We also need depth and more versatility in skills and size on the DL.

The OL just needs a makeover period.
the sales pitch is pretty freaking straight forward. do you want a shot at the playoffs with shadeur and travis and all these skill guys? if we can shore up the ol we will be dangerous. CU's best teams have always had a game wrecker at LB too. it has been too long and that would be awesome to change.

I don't follow particularly closely, but I get the sense that they're working towards more OL/DL recruits but mostly leaving a number of schollies open to hit the portal hard again.

Of the 10 commits so far, 6 are linemen.

One 2 star and one 3 star OL is not going to fix the problem. Those are projects. CP needs difference makers. Those elite OL require $$$ NIL. Unless 5430 picks up, its going to be a swing and miss on 2024 OL recruits

He hasn’t even been through a recruiting cycle yet. Of course Corey is the lone like on this post.
Well, they failed in the transfer portal and late signing period and have one HS blue chip OL interested at the moment. My broader point to #1 pick was that it doesn’t matter if he hand picked or missed on all their OL targets, the OL personnel moves in year one have been an abject failure.

I agree and I think if you’re talking to elite portal OLs who have started on P5 teams or are young and have been in strong 2 deeps, they’re also going to want to know a lot about the CU OL coaching. So in addition to $NIL, there’s also that issue. A lot of high value OLs think they have a shot at the NFL and are highly receptive to good coaching/learning. They want it.

So you can see kind of a chicken/egg issue with getting good portal OLs in here. I believe they have to do the coaching change first.

As #1 pick says, it’s the main challenge going forward.

Are we ever going to be a player again with the Poly community?
I think Prime will get the NIL he needs to get anyone. I bet they are working on a specific package for Seaton and will land him
I love the Condo idea, and that could be worked on with a private investor/booster if the school will give them some land to lease
Don't forget parking, since our guys cannot figure that out

Outside of SS, TH, Domineck, and sometimes Weaver, right now it’s a very JAG-y roster.
Agreed. There are some young guys who have the ability to develop into high level players obviously, but considering this is a 1-2 win team without Shedeur, I don’t know why people are laughing at the idea that our WR4 might be a JAG

Watched the game late last night.

Not sure why the run game isn’t utilized to set up the pass game/play action/whatever RPO is used by Lewis? After the first couple Off. drives, the UCLA defensive front just went berserker mode and went through the O-line like a tissue paper banner. The line has absolutely NO clue on who to block and when to block. Just like Matt McC pointed out…simple blocking assignments and calls could have been made to possibly shore up the massacre of that position group last night. Unbelievable. Clearly this is fault on both sides -players and coaches. BoB has disappeared from appearances in videos and such, since around the CSU or Oregon game…not sure if that is telling? If whatever scheme or such ids being called and the player clearly sees that it ain’t working, go rogue and humor one of the three Defensive front that are abusing your QB and keep them doing so. Those twins were having a ball going after Shedeur. I would have been completely embarrassed and pissed off enough to put both of those guys into the ground.

So, Prime lands the best available RB in the portal, and uses him sparingly and on ST? I’m not sure if it’s a mental/hesitancy thing from being injured, or is there a Hagan like hierarchy in the room with coach flea? It seemed like when Wilkerson and Alton got some touches later in the game, they gained decent yardage. It’s strange to continue to see Edwards being utilized like he’s a 6’0” 215 lb back that can truck defenders or plow through the LoS, or continue to use five wide sets that set up mayhem for Shedeur to deal with.

The defensive, other than getting no consistent pressure on the QB, played very well. Not sure why Woods is being played completely out of his wheel house? Sure, he is a good hitter. He doesn’t seem to be playing with the same motor as he did last season. If they are going to play him in a different role, maybe use him in a way similar to how Ryan Moeller (Buff Backer) or Davion Taylor (Star) were used years ago. No way a 4.9 40 QB should be clearing 12 yards, freely, on a third and 11.

Hunter was an absolute ninja last night. Coming out of nowhere to make to boss INT’s. Just way too good to not be on the field. Shilo is a hitter, but going for crushing body shots will catch up to him fast (especially in what’s left of the PAC12).

Not sure what’s up with the LB room? Probably the least featured and underwhelming position group. It’s like they are just…there…taking up space. Whatever happened to Ham, and the difference makers picked up from the portal?

Is Cormani on a milk carton in the greater front range area? At this point, he is giving me Ashaad Clayton vibes…he’s bought in, then he isn’t happy and missing/late to meetings and practice. Maybe he came into Boulder with a change of heart, and is waiting for the right opportunity to portal out?

For coaching, it’s been pretty ****ing underwhelming. As soon as tape became available on the Buffs, it’s been steadily getting more difficult for the offense to do anything. Is Sean Lewis the answer? Would the offense benefit with a new line coach, and to drop any favoritism in favor of winning? Is Charles Kelly the guy for defense?

I has some “what if” scenarios in my head…one that stuck out was what if Prime went after Brennan Marion before another P5 school snatches him up…and some how convinced Chris Petersen to come aboard as an offensive assistant/analyst to help Marion out for a couple years? Likelihood is zero, but it’s be cool…

Husband (who - before he left the country last week - told me he didn't want to know anything about the game): "Should I watch the game?"

Me (who knew they lost, but it wasn't a blowout and had a couple of decent plays from guys like Travis): "Yeah, sure."

Husband (halfway through the recording, with the benefit of FFing through the rough parts): "Why did you tell me to watch this? They look terrible!"

Me: "You told me you didn't want to know anything."

Husband: "Do they lose?"

Me: "Yes. But only by 12."

Husband: "Why did you tell me to watch it?! I only wanted to watch if they won!"

Me: "So you wanted me to spoil it for you? Or not?"

Husband: turns off game and walks off

Didn’t realize “worth watching” means “Colorado won but don’t tell me the outcome.”

I think that's a little extreme. One thing everyone seems to discount is the amount of youth we have on this roster, some of which is buried now and will likely end up being major contributors.

Edwards isn't a jag.
Omarion Miller isn't a jag.
Stoutmire has had a couple rough outings but that's not unique to freshmen at his position. I don't think he's a jag.
McNeill and Bishop Thomas have shown flashes and they're sophomore and freshman respectively.

These are just guys I can think of off the top of my head without going down the roster. I think everyone would be shocked at how few of our starters are out of eligibility at the end of this season if they looked. Yeah we need to hit the portal and recruit (particularly in the trenches), but it's ****ing chicken little around here talking like we need a complete roster overhaul again. We still need to develop young guys with talent, put size on them, etc to be a sustainable top tier program. Even the blue bloods have to do that. Pull yourselves together guys.
