A few thoughts on the game

-I really feel we should go ahead and bench Cody. I love the kids drive, but we have already burned Hansen's RS. Go ahead and let him get all the experience he can get. I think Cody will be more valuable to the team mentoring Tyler. It really sucks that this is how he's going to go, but this is best for the team imo.

-Was it just me, or did we see less of Sumler? I really hope the staff goes ahead with Rodney and Darrell as much as possible. If Darrell is hurt then go with Moyd. I'd like to see Sumler switch to a FB role next season. We are losing Cantrell, so I think it'll happen. At least I hope it does.

-The line looks to be improving. I know we still got killed out there, especially Solder, but there seems to be a difference between these last two games compared to the UT and KU games. It may not be by much, but there is a improvement.

-This whole deal with blaming Hawkins for all of this is a little silly to me. Sure he deserves criticism. But this is what you get when you start from scratch, that's why it's called rebuilding. Look at the program he's inherited. You like to dismiss this argument as 'excuses' but it's reality. When you force young kids on the field, too early imo, and tell them to "hang in there" vs. the likes of UM, UT and FSU, don't you think that's a little much? And then rail against them and the staff when we get stomped? I keep on hearing this "coach them up" comment like it's really that simple. Come on. Normal teams replace their starters with experienced backups. Our experienced backups are RS-FR. Hawk needs time. Hawk has only had really two classes to bring in. The first one was on very limited time, so he gets some slack on that. I think he needs 5 years. Let him have his SR's here before we can really gauge his coaching abilities. No syko, that doesn't mean we can't criticize him. But saying he's lost the team is laughable.

-Our receiver situation is bad. Someone here mentioned we have one solid WR in McKnight. The next best is J-fly who isn't doing well. I'm not sure if he's not getting enough PT or if he's getting doubled all day. But it's not like we have a lot of options out there. I think Keisau has done a phenomenal job with the pieces he's been asked to work with. We need Simas in the worst way next season. I'm not saying he's the answer, but he's probably the best receiver we got on the team. The TE's aren't a factor because Geer blocks 99% of the time.

-The calls for Helfrich and Riddle's heads might be premature, but I'm not totally against replacing Riddle. ST's have been a disaster for the last 3 years. It may be time for Riddle to step aside next season.

I don't agree with the Helfrich deal though. The offense sucks. But I see the execution as the problem, when you offense cannot do basic things like pass, block, and catch, then you are really limited as to what you can do out there. Half of the time our RB's and WR's don't know where to line up. How do you expect to switch the offense at this point?

Look. I'm not saying the spread is the answer to our problems. But we tried the I and still got the same results. We can't put in two TE's because our only blocking TE is Geer. And he's not the best at that either.

Don't spin this into another "Valdez says to OL is our only problem" because that isn't what I'm saying. There is plenty of blame to go around. Especially to the coaching staff.

One final thought.

Three of the remaining four games are all very winnable. All four of our losses have been by ranked teams. I think we can pull out 3 of 4 to finish the season. :drink:

I agree with your post, but I'll add my $0.02 as well.

I just didn't like the gameplan from the get go.

Why did we pooch it? That shows a complete lack of faith in ST. Yeah I know Maclin is damn good, but let's have a reason to not kick to him before we do that firsthand. People still kick to JFly even though he can break off a pretty good KO. That just instills a lack of faith in your team from the get-go. That's a loser attitude and not a way to walk into a VERY tough game. We still lose this game even if we kickoff to Maclin, but the team is very impressionable being so young and that certainly doesn't help.

Collins called a great game last week. This week he went back to the usual BS playcalling. Rushing 3?!?!?! FFS, did they count to 5 mississippi before they rushed too? Our DL has struggled at times getting to the QB, but we got to Freeman last week so we can do it. Again, a lack of faith in the D and trying to play it safe and not get blown out (didn't work). Daniel needs heat and yeah he'll make you pay, but you hit them square in the jaw and tell them you are coming. How many times did they run a play without anyone in their backfield to protect? IMO, that's really when Daniel will make you pay.

We lack speed at WR. That's not a dig on who we have there, it's just that when I see the size of a lot of the top teams out there we can't compete. That's fine, I hope we'll get back to that point, but for now we have to develop an offensive gameplan for what we do have. Trying to fit a square peg into a round hole isn't going to work.

What do we have?
2 TEs that can catch
1 really damn good RB and 1 RB that has superstar potential written all over him
1 speed WR and a couple of possession WRs

As much as it pains me to say this, the offense that Watson used to run would work better. We still wouldn't be putting up 35 pts a game, but we could probably score more than 14. Where did the screen go? What about slant patterns (with a taller QB there's no more excuse)? What about TE seam passes? We have to make other teams respect a quick 3 step drop so they don't blitz or else get burned. Trying to wait for the play to develop is KILLING us. Our Oline can't hold their blocks for it to develop and we don't have the speed to break open a play.

As was shown today, in our game and the OSU/UT one, it's too difficult for most teams to adjust to a TE that goes out for a pass. We MUST incorporate the both of them in our game. CU teams in recent memory that were pretty good, maybe not world beaters, used the TE a lot. Klop, Sypniewski, Graham. Yeah those guys were NFLers, but LBs at this level usually have a tough time in pass coverage, unless they are going to the league.

I'm waiting for ST to be "electric." Beamer wins games because of great special teams play. However, I'll let this pass because if there is one thing ST shows is team depth. As of right now we don't have it. Hell, even OU for some forsaken reason has ST trouble. That does not mean that we shouldn't try to be better. DiLallo has trouble holding on to the ball at times, we haven't made a FG in a while, people don't stick to their lanes in coverage and we haven't had a block in a while. If a team like KSU can block FGs then why can't we?! Again, not asking for amazing ST, but we definitely have not made any strides and that is not acceptable.

The fact that we are doing this well at 4-4 with one of the youngest teams bodes well if we finish at least 2-2 in the next 4 then there is hope. I haven't given up hope and I never gave up hope even when we went 2-10.

Edit: That wasn't Dilallo yesterday. My mistake and I'll own up to it. However, what the hell were we doing putting a less experienced punter down deep in our own territory? UGH!

I agree with your post minus the comments on Helfrich and OSU being a winnable game.

Yeah My bad. I meant 3 out of 4. OSU is a L.

As for Helfrich, I believe we should stick with him this year, and see how he does next year. If it's more of the same then we should dump him. Maybe Hawkins should think about bringing in a QB coach to take some of the load off of Helfrich's shoulders. This way he can focus on the whole offense.

What is Hawk's role in our system? For OSU, Gundy is the offensive coach/coordinator. He wasn't even paying attention when his D was on the field a lot of the time.

Does Hawk help gameplan and set the vision for the following week with the OC and DC or is he calling at least some of the plays as well? I'm just out of the loop around here.

I'm sure Hawk has a heavy influence on the gameplan, but I think, for the most part, he lets Helfrich call the plays. I could be wrong on that though.

I also doubt Hawk would respond honestly if the question was asked by a reporter. He's going to take the blame for a loss, and defer credit for a W. The way it should be.

So is Hawkins when we are on offense.

I agree with most of what has been posted. I do have a couple of thoughts:

1) D. Hawkins: I have been a loyal supporter of Hawk since he was hired, but yesterday made me question his leadership. The team QUIT and played with ZERO fire or attitude. That is on Hawk. A team reflects their coach. I would have had an blood vessel explode in my brain before seeing my team get their a**** handed to them like that.

2) Cody is done playing. Great kid, but no more playing time please.

3) If we play half as weak as we did against Mizzou we will lose the final four games.

Lone good thing to take from this game..

Guess whooos baaaack.

Dscott looks like his old self again. Did you see that run on the last drive when he ran that safety over? ****ing awesome! He got up all pumped too. Lets hope he is in the gameplan next week, NO MORE EXCUSES FOR NOT GETTING HIM IN THE GAME.

I guess the one positive from the offense was the fact that we ran a couple of WR screens (that me and about a million other people have been calling for) and they worked for some nice yardage....now how about we hit the tight end and get the RB's in the flats and I might be satisfied

Fair post, I would like to see better after year 3 though. We lose 2 OL and this offense melts down and looks clueless.

Texas a&m can score and it's on the road, loss
Iowa state, our 1 chance for victory for rest of season.
Okie state- next
****braska- they will take it to us,on the road, they can score and we will get clobbered.

We as fans have no control of what happens so, I guess we have to start from scratch come spring and hopefully turn it around.

If we could somehow beat a&m and beat Iowa state and get a bowl, that would be much better than what i'm thinking is going to happen and the extra practices would be good for this young club on offense.

I respectfully disagree with you about the offensive line. They are not improving. Missouri has a good front four but they aren't as fast as FSU or Texas and they ran us over. Solder looked like he was playing in cement. The fumble of cody's in the first half was a perfect example. The running game was nonexistent. There were no holes, until really late in the game.

As for the qb situation, I agree that Hansen should play, but only because the only consistently successful play we have from the passing game is when Hansen takes off running for his life.

Kent Riddle should be polishing his interview skills. Our special teams are awful, just plain awful. Unless he is personally recruiting all our four and five star players, he has no business being here.

The defense has been very good this year but the scheme last night was a joke. The signature play on defense last night was the fourth and one in the second half when we blitzed, forcing a quick throw....to a wide open wr because the cb was ten yards off the line of scrimmage ON FOURTH AND ONE!!!!!!! Or the end of the first half when we had forced a third and 10, and even though it was an obvious passing situation, left all the lb's on the field, and they isolated a wr on a lb and completed the pass. What the heck were linebackers doing on the field on third and ten against a five wr spread formation? All game long, a wr would jog up the filed about 7 yards along the sideline, sit there, and chase daniel would calmly take the free yards.

The bottom line is that this team stinks. I'm still a Hawk supporter, I think the team will get there eventually, but this year is over, except for the learning experience. I hope I'm wrong and we manage to get to a bowl, because we need the practice. But I don't see how we win a game on the road with this team. And OSU is going to kill us. They played toe to toe with Texas at Texas.

You want to give the coaches the benefit of the doubt because of what they have to work with. I think that 'what they have to work with' excuse is exactly why they need to either change their outlook, or be replaced.

Yeah, there are injuries, yeah, they are young, and yet, they keep forcing the same crap onto the field every week. They're forcing their players and talent into a scheme that doesn't work. They should be molding a scheme around what they have on the field.

The fact is, around the country, other coaching staffs overcome injuries, overcome youth. The Jacksonville Jaguars lost their three top offensive linemen, and yet, keep winning. The Minnesota Gophers and FSU have played more young players than the Buffs, and yet, they manage to win and stay competitive. Michigan has a new coach, scheme and a young team, and are at least competitive each week. When Tom Brady went down, what did the Patriots coaches do? They ADAPTED their scheme to fit Cassel.

The Buffs coaches are NOT adapting and the fault lies with the respective coordinators. There have been no apparent adjustments for the injuries. No apparent adjustments at half-time. No other in-game adjustments.

Maybe you're right. Maybe what the coaches have to work with is just that bad. I just don't see that though.

The Buffs are still on pace for an expected 6-7 finish. And they would have lost to UT and UM regardless. Even with youth and injuries though, FSU and KU were both winnable games. The more they show every week, the more apparent it becomes that coaching and leadership are affecting this team more than injuries and youth.

Maybe you're right. Maybe what the coaches have to work with is just that bad. I just don't see that though.

I'm certainly not trying to say there is no blame for the staff. I agree with you when you say we should modify our O to fit our players. We should modify, not scrap the entire O. I don't think we can pull off a system change with the level of experience we are putting on the field. jmho.

Good post. I agree with all the points except the one about Mark Helpless. You can blame lack of execution on the players all you want. But at some point that has to reflect on the coaches. A QB who was respectable last year has totally regressed this year, and just gets worse as the season goes on. Hansen has been a breath of fresh air, but when he's in the game the game plan seems to be based on the idea that he simply can't be trusted to throw the ball. Based on what evidence from the two games he's played, I have no idea. Particularly in comparison to Cody's results and the fact that they will throw the ball most of the time when he's on the field...

I simply haven't seen anything in the play of the QBs, in the game plan or in the overall execution of the offense that tells me that the OC/QB coach is doing anything positive for this program...

Do you think he should be fired for this season? I think he should come back knowing he's on the hot seat next season.

Isn't anyone happy that Scott is healthy again?

I liked seeing him get 8 carries. I'm not sure if all of his misfortune can be blamed on his injury. I think he's just a normal freshman. He's adjusting to the speed of the game. I was listening to the KOA postgame last night and one of them was referring to Scott's comments on how fast CSU's defense was. He said if he thought CSU's D was fast then he's in for a long season.

He's adjusting and will take his lumps this year. I think he will be solid next season.

Do you think he should be fired for this season? I think he should come back knowing he's on the hot seat next season.

Do you think he would change anything if he knew he was on the hot seat? I don't think the problem is a lack of effort. I just don't think, right now, that he has shown he can run a Big XII caliber offense. Realistically, he may not be fired, but I really wouldn't object if he was. My only concern would be disrupting continuity for Hansen - but that means we get the right guy to be here for the next 3 plus years if we make a change, not that we can't change...

Isn't anyone happy that Scott is healthy again?

Well, after that mess "happy" is a relative term, but it was encouraging to see him get lots of carries and some good runs last night.

I could be persuaded that Helfrich comes back with an ultimatum that he needs to deliver next year. But I absolutely agree that Riddle just isn't getting it done. The special teams are just awful, I can't even think of one bright spot in that area right now besides Josh Smith as a decent kick returner.

As far the offense, I have no idea what offense we should run, but the coaches need to figure out exactly what they want to do in the offseason. We do not look like we have a coherent plan for what we want to do right now. When your offense has no identity or direction, it will not succeed.

One name I would throw out for a potential replacement for Helfrich (if not Kiseau) is Al Borges. It didn't end well in Auburn, but he is pretty good IMO and he has west coast ties for recruiting. Not sure we could afford him, but it never hurts to ask.

I'm pretty much a know-nothing armchair quarterback, but I agree with your assessment, I'm not seeing improvement. Nothing personal against the kids who are out there trying, and I know most of them are young, but the 5 we are trotting out there right now might be the worst OL I can ever remember us having. There's a defender in the backfield on EVERY PLAY!

I'm certainly not trying to say there is no blame for the staff. I agree with you when you say we should modify our O to fit our players. We should modify, not scrap the entire O. I don't think we can pull off a system change with the level of experience we are putting on the field. jmho.

I agree with that... they've run three different systems in the last three years and I think that's part of the problem. I don't think they need to scrap the entire O, in fact, I think with a healthy O-line and an experienced Hansen, the O they're running now could click pretty well.

There are basic plays though, regardless of scheme they could be going to to get away from the complicated shotgun runs. I don't think going to a basic I-type offense would be straying from the scheme too much and would let the players get the basics down.

It's an argument against getting rid of Helfrich, because another system next year is just gonna result in the same crap.

There are basic plays though, regardless of scheme they could be going to to get away from the complicated shotgun runs. I don't think going to a basic I-type offense would be straying from the scheme too much and would let the players get the basics down.

I hear you. At first I was against the criticism aimed at Helfrich, but I'm slowly starting to come around.

There are two people in the running to replace Helfrich(if it happens) imo. They are Grimes and Keisau. I seriously doubt Hawk will bring in someone from outside the program to assume the job.

I think the guys we have will improve eventually; the talent is there, but Solder is a first year lineman, Head got hurt and is still playing, and Behrens and Bahr weren't the guys who won jobs in the fall. The future is still pretty bright though. Next year these guys will be better, and MTM and Ryan Miller will be back, and hopefully Tau will be back, and givens and Dannewitz will be off the redshirt farm. Then we can make people pay for 58-0.

Not to quibble, but strictly speaking we weren't running a different system the second year, we just were able to run more than three plays because Cody knew the playbook. And we ran plenty of shotgun last year, too. I think the biggest change, is the no-huddle way of calling plays, and maybe that will get better, but I'm not a fan. I think its a gimmick that will be passe by the time we get it down.

Well, after that mess "happy" is a relative term, but it was encouraging to see him get lots of carries and some good runs last night.

Sorry, buts 'lots of carries' is not 8.

Keep the OC. Fire Riddle.

Jsmith hasn't been thaaaaat great as a return man either.

One name I would throw out for a potential replacement for Helfrich (if not Kiseau) is Al Borges. It didn't end well in Auburn, but he is pretty good IMO and he has west coast ties for recruiting. Not sure we could afford him, but it never hurts to ask.
NO NO NO. He runs the "air raid" TT offense as far as I know. I want an offense like OSU has, not like TT. I want whoever is running ball state (or tulsa) perhaps. I don't think we could get those guys with CU's limitations in assisstant pay.

Imho, its keep Helfrich or get top flight non-BCS offensive coordinator talent. Remember, we have like 30 upperclassmen, and OVER FIFTY freshmen.
