Thank God only one more game this year..

Except for the insane kool-aid drinkers who think we are going to beat Nebraska, next game will be our last of the year.. Injuries played a big part, but this year was a step back.. Cody got worse, Hawk's coaching staff doesn't impress me, kicking game is pathetic, no WR's and we still have no playmakers on defense (although I have to admit I was impressed with the freshman who stepped in for Walters (Manake (sp?) tonight. Sure hope our recruiting gets better because I'm not very impressed with what we have so far..

Going from 2-10 to 6-6 isn't hard, the hard part is breaking through to the 8-4, 9-3, 10-2, etc.. Until Hawk improves the talent level here, 5-7, 6-6 is going to be the norm under Hawk..

I hope some changes are made in the staff.

Did you watch tonight's game? Maybe even a couple minutes of it? That Oklahoma State team we just played is far superior to the Nebraska team we'll be lining up against in 2 weeks, and we held our own against them just fine.

I'm not in the slightest trying to contend that we'll definitely beat Nebraska, but after the game we had tonight, the team that will take the field in Lincoln will be a hell of a lot more confident than the team that took the field against Iowa State last week. That counts for a lot, especially for a team with so many 2nd and 3rd stringers holding starting roles.

I'm not going to respond much to the post above....given the injuries and how hard we played....I can't second a lot of what JimmyBuff is feeling...except my unimpressive-ness with Hawkins and his staff....I will say we are seriously smoking some hashish if we think we are going to GO to Lincoln and beat the Fuskers....we are going to be at least a 10 to 17 point underdog and that KILLS me. I'm holding out hope though......realistically we are a ways away from being a solid team.

You are nuts if you think tonight's game gives our team some kind of confidence going into Nebraska..

Does pulling together a recruiting class the Phil Steele ranked 11th in the nation count as "improving talent"?

I'm far more optimistic for next season, than many folks appear to be. Frustration with coaching? What were they working with?

Patience.

Why's that? They physically went toe to toe with a team tonight that's bigger, stronger, and faster than Nebraska.

If this season has taught us one thing, one game is not a pattern for the next. We have no consistency and therefore one close game at home (and close is all relative) is not indicative of how we will play on the road against a rival....AND I'm not 100% sure we have the coaching staff to put a game plan together to pull off this next one.

I agree, patience...I say 4 years...and next year is it. What do you think? How many years will you be ok with?

Good, so we're in agreement then. We could absolutely play better the day after Thanksgiving than we have all year.

I thought the offensive line played a good ball game, for the second game in a row, for what that's worth. I'm just glad the young guys are getting some playing time. :)

You check our record on the road with Hawk as the coach?

And you are underrating Nebraska.. They put up 51 on us last year when they had just about thrown away the season.. If they can put 45 on Kansas at home, they can put 50 something on us..

Your right...we could...but all indications are we will fall flat on our face...I like your optimism though...GO BUFFS...and I would sell my soul to beat NU this year...I will be wearing black and gold to the Alabama-Auburn game in two weeks regardless of how we play.

And put up 56 on K-State on the road today... The team we dropped a 14-spot on at home.

People always say three or four years because that permits a staff to complete build a team around their recruits.

But as I often point out, people are idots.

Here's the deal, if Hawkins' program shows promise, over time, he should attract increasingly talented recruits.

Why would we judge a coach on his recruits from his first or second year of recruiting? It's an iterative process, and I'm willing to give it time.

Do the Two-in-the-Pinkel naysayers at Mizzou should feel stupid for abandoning ship after four or five years? Do Kansas fans, screaming for Mangino's head feel stupid, now that they're (sort of) back on board? The list goes on, if one looks around the country.

husker fans, desperate to can Solich might caution us of the danger of impatience.

Give it time. Hawkins is showing improvement in the processes, values and recruits that serve as the foundation for a quality program. It will come together. Four years? I hope, but I won't give up hope on Hawkins (unless some very compelling evidence convinces me otherwise) after just four years. Five years? I'd be concerned if we weren't seeing progress in the win/loss department.

It takes time.

Actually, Nebraska came into Boulder with a lot of momentum last year. They'd just replaced Keller with Ganz the week before and promptly scored 73 points in that game against a fairly decent Kansas State team. Colorado on the other hand had lost 4 of its last 5 games, including a heart breaker against Iowa State the week before. If you had to pick a team with a mental advantage coming into that one, the smart money would have definitely been on the Nubs.

Regardless, I'm not arguing that we WILL beat Nebraska next week, all I'm saying is that it's well within the range of possibility.

I do, if we have other wr's than mcknight and crawford starting and if our rush defense becomes good in 2 weeks.

Nebraska will rush for 300 yds if our defense doesn't step up.

I think think "some" confidence is gained but how much, who knows.

I hear you...and understand where you are coming from...but I have to say I can't remember seeing a program that languished in mediocrity for a time and then turned it around with consistency. I don't think Kansas or Missouri are examples either. I think they both are seeing a run of temporary talent that is pushing them to the top for a short spell but they don't have consistent talent...and their relative lack of defensive talent is a good example of what I'm talking about...they are not complete teams. Again, I HOPE Hawk can turn it around and I'm in no way judging him based on this injury riddled, highly competitive season. But today's recruits don't look for programs that are just good programs that are being run the right way...they are looking for great programs that have an upside. No upside with us right now.

Ralphie...you keep thinking last year or last game has some bearing on the next...give it up brother....we don't make enough adjustments to learn anything from week to week..

I don't think last year's game has any bearing on this year's, I was just countering Jimmy's assertion that Nebraska had given up on their season before they came into Boulder last year.

If we go 6 - 6 in 09, which is pretty much what can be expected - maybe 7 - 5 best case scenario - will that legitimatize keeping Hawk around? Alot of our injuries were to linemen, and that's alot of weight to put on a surgically repaired knee. I'm really getting tired of losing, Hawk has been here 3 years now, and after the NU game, will be 3 straight losing years.

7 - 5 best case scenario next year. Huh? I don't like losing either but the work Hawk has done off the field has earned him until 2010.

Valdez is a popcorn eater.

Looking at next season...

1-Colorado State (This game is IN BOULDER, better be a W, even though it will be back to the nail-biter we've been used to before this year)

2-@ Miami, OH (W or the walls will begin to close around Hawk)

3-Wyoming (W, and a assuming new personnel will give the Cowboys some problems)

4-@ WVU (L-No Pat White but still Noel Divine and an athletic team)

5-@ Texas (L)

6-Kansas (Toss-up, who knows what the future is for KU)

7-@ KSU (W-New quarterback, new personnel, I see them struggling next year, should be a win)

8-Mizzou (L-They're still a deep team and should be late enough in the season to where the young 5* is feeling comfortable)

9-Texas A&M (W-At home, in my eyes very even teams, but like I said being at home should give us the edge)

10-@ Iowa St. (W-if this program is going anywhere, you better win that game)

11-@ Okie St. (L-On the road, nice athletic team with Zac Robinson returning)

12-Nebraska (W/L-Toss up, Nebraska is going to lose a large chunk of their offense so it will be interesting to where they are next year)

Best case scenario: 8-4

Best guess: 7-5/6-6

Worst Case scenario: 6-6

But the non-conference schedule is definitely in CU's favor next year, as I see 3 wins, so need to find 3-4 wins for a bowl.

If any of you are seriously saying that this game won't be close I think your nuts! History has shown us that regardless of the teams records this game can be a shootout. We are playing much better at the right time in the season, but I'm still cautious about this game.

:yeahthat: However, the only way that you are going to beat NU is if you have some serious improvements in the passing game. No one has really run on us this season and no one has rushed at all in the past 5 games or so. It's going to take some deep balls plus some turnovers. You shut down OSU's rushing game (granted, without Hunter), and made them one dimensional, which is why you were in it so late. If you can do that against NU, we got ourselves a game.

Man, what a nostalgic thread. Looks a lot like the Callahan era threads at Huskerpedia and Huskerboard.

We Husker fans are not satisfied with our football team now as it stands, but at least now we're feeling much better about the *program* heading in the right direction; the direction it had lost under the former AD and under his (desperate) choice for HC.

I don't know much about Coach Hawkins except for his success with Boise State, 53 and 11, amazing. If he can do it there he can do it at a great program like Colorado. My guess is he'll turn it around quicker than you think, perhaps next year.

The game with us this year will be a barn-burner I'm sure, no matter our respective records this season.
