Lynn Katoa Status

I'm not commenting on Katoa until we hear more about his situation, but WTF is it with these kids who can't get passing grades in the classroom when they're not even playing ball due to suspension, injury, etc?

Get your **** together, guys! It's not that difficult, you just have to stop playing the PS3 for a few hours each day, go to class and study a little bit.

****.

I think you made a point that you weren't commenting on Katoa...

To be fair, we don't know the situation. It could be anything at this point from grades, academic issues, behavior issues, legal issues, whatever. Hawkins basically said he wasn't commenting, which tells me that he's not yet sure if Katoa will be available for whatever reason. Could be an eligibility issue. Could be Katoa is leaving school at semester.... I'm sure if it was a health issue or something like that Hawk wouldn't have left it so open ended....

A few weeks ago at the Hawk luncheon before the OSU game, Hawk got a question about who from the redshirts and ineligibles were going to be big help next year. He mentioned Pericek, Dannewitz, Polk, Simas, Tau, Vaimounga (yep, about 3 days before he went down), as a few of the guys who could help us. I was hoping he'd say Katoa is killing us in practice, but he didn't mention any of the young LBs. He talked about how Simas was killing the defense in practice.

Yep, I was talking about all the others who have been in that boat the past 1-2 years. I'm going to be really pissed if Katoa (or Major or Polk, etc) ends up with the rest of them.

I'd be surprised if he transferred, but stranger things have happened, that's for sure.

So you have to sit out 2 seasons if you transfer to another conference school? Is that a Big XII rule or an NCAA rule?

I believe it's an NCAA rule but the school the player is leaving can waive the extra year if they want to. They are under no obligation to do so, however, and most do not if they will play the other team while that player is there.

I'm not 100%, but I think that's how it works.

The school has to release you from your scholarship. Releases are generally given contingent upon a player not transfering to a school on a future schedule. Sometimes this consideration is dropped (Marcus Houston for example), but I doubt a player would be given a release to transfer to OU.

Yeah, the release was what I was thinking about. Are they the same thing, or is it two separate items (a release and a waiver)?

I'm not sure what a exactly a waiver is in this instance, but from your post I thought you were referring to a school releasing the student being able to waive the required sit out year.

Perhaps I misunderstood you and we were making the same point.

OK, so it sounds like they are the same thing. I thought the school could waive the 2 year wait and the schollie release was a different matter but it sounds like that's what the schollie release does.

Don't mind me.

If we can't get this kid on the field next year I am going to be extremely disappointed.

do you have information? or is that opinion based on the speculation here?

he probably has pay board info but based on the events of last spring it wouldnt be a 100% surprise if Katoa never plays a down at CU.

I haven't heard any pay board stuff that is different than this thread. I just think it's not good when Hawk is airing this stuff out publicly. I'm sure there are more kids on the squad that are having their share of issues. But the fact that Hawk is speaking about him in this way is real bad.

I believe Hawk was asked specifically if Katoa was good to go in the spring. Hawk answers the questions. He's not going to say - oh yeah, he's doing great. He told us there's issues to be worked out....

And yes, I'm sure there's others who will be cutting it close and it's far from a slam dunk they are good to go....

Has Hawk made comments like that before when a kid has ended up playing the in end? I can't remember him doing so. Count me as worried.

I don't think Hawk has addressed a player like he did with Katoa. I could be wrong though.

definitely worried. I relistened to the telecon.
Question: Will Lynn Katoa be good to go in the spring?

He replied - "we'll see, we'll see where he is".

Question: Is it a question of academics for him?
"we're working on a lot of things with him"

This troubling news to say the least....

Katoa is the exact type of player we need on our defense. Speed. Speed and more speed. He would probably be a diffrence make from day one....and if he is good to play my money is on him over taking Smart for that WILL LB position.

It is becoming really disturbing that we cannot get our players on the field for whatever reasons. I understand the whole academics thing, but maybe we need more of a support system to help get these players through all their classes.

You HAVE to get all your recruits on the field, becasue you never know when one is gonna do something great. If we let Simas and Katoa get away, we could be regretting it in a couple of years.

That said, how hard is it to pass freshman classes? There are tons of drunk and stoned freshmen who manage to do it...
