A follow up to the issue of increased ticket prices

You think Mike Bohn gave any thought to bringing back beer sales as a way to generate revenue without the need to raise ticket prices?

Nahhhh, I didn't think so, either.

I think Bohn should put our fans to the test. Come out and say if we can sell out every home game, which isn't really asking much, then he'll bring back beer.

I bet we'll never see beer in Folsom again.

You act as though we're that far from doing it anyway. What was the average attendance last year? 50K? The stadium only holds 55K. How many 5-7 teams averaged 50K in the stands last year? A&M & Michigan probably, but not to many others.

.

Maybe, but we will continue to see empty beer cans and liquor bottles throughout the stands after every game...

It remains a mystery to me as to why they continue to pass up all the potential extra revenue of beer sales.

Uhh, watching half the fans file in well after the game has started is pretty depressing. I do not think we should be bragging about our fan support. It's pretty bad. Do you realize how many tickets we give away to charities just to fill seats?

You wont see beer at games unless the Big XII governing body allows it. It was not CU admin that did in the beer says as they were just doing what they were directed to do by higher ups in the conference. 2007 Big XII CG in San Antonio had beer sales at the Alamo dome.... 2008 Big XII CG in KC had no beer sales at Arrowhead even though it was on the board. I, along we several others, even though it was 25 degrees were told that they couldn't sell it as the Big XII would nto allow it....

at the 2007 game in the alamo dome, we had to drink the beer outside. once we passed the gates, the bottles had to be "tumped out"

You are about right on here, except you missed one team. The dreaded nemesis of the plains, the Nebraska Cornhuskers, went 5-7 several seasons ago and packed the house each game of that forgettable season.

Not to mention games where we sell the four packs.

You're not seeing the cause/effect here? No beer in the stadium = people drinking in the parking lots = people showing up late to the game and flying out at halftime.

Give me a call when there's something else to do in *ebraska other than watch the fuskers and hump sheep.

Several? Stop acting like it was so long ago, it was last year when you were coming off that season.:smile2:

I actually agree more with Sacky here, but I don' think they will bring beer back. BTW, I think CU has a lot of alums and fans and people interested in the program, for some reason they just aren't very supportive. I am always talking to someone that wants to talk buffs or is interested in going to games that has never been.

Oh, and it's not that bad, we averaged like in the top 40 nationally for average attandance last season. Thats a lot better than the sheep up north who can't even fill a 30,000 stadium.

Even if they sold beer in the stadium. I still think fans would show up late. We just don't have a very good fan base.

You forgot to add the death threats your fans aimed at the coaching staff, and showing up to an asst coaches son's HS game and chanting for the coach to be fired. Classy indeed.

I completely disagree with you. Our fanbase is, in my opinion, remarkably strong. Where we've made mistakes in the past is not cultivating a passionate following like they do in Tennessee, Alabama, Michigan, etc. Unfortunately, we still don't do that. However, my point remains - CU has had three losing seasons in a row and still sells 1,000 tickets to a recruiting lunceon to introduce the #48 ranked class in the country. We had 20,000 at the Spring game last year, how many will we get this year? 25,000? 30,000? I wouldn't bet against it. There's a very, very passionate base here. It needs to be expanded, but the fundamentals are there. Raising ticket prices won't do us any favors in getting in new fans, I'm afraid. Fortunately, the tickets that will cost more are being sold to folks who have, by and large, been ticket holders for 15+ years and wouldn't give them up for the world. If the increase in ticket prices was being done to subsidize lower tickets prices for entry level fans, I'd be OK with that.

To the point of fans showing up late if beer were sold - again I disagree. I suppose it would still happen to a degree, but not to the degree it is now. We didn't have these issues when we did sell beer, so why would you think that we would continue to have them if beer sales were brought back.

"Remarkably strong" fan support? WTF?

And don't fudge the numbers either, we had 17,800 there last year.

It's not Bohn's call. It's the Regents. And I don't think they have any intention of bringing beer back.

I personally think that number is incorrect. Nobody knows for sure because they don't sell tickets. Being in the stands, they looked to be just under half full to me.

And yes, I'd say our support is remarkably strong. WTF? Why is everybody so down on fan support lately? I'll be the first to admit that the fan showing at the OSU and ISU games were nothing short of pathetic, particularly the students. But I remember when we couldn't shoe-horn 30,000 into that stadium in the early 80's. We've come a long way. I don't think many people realize that.

Contrary to popular belief, and that of the resident landthief, it was the Boulder Chancellor's decision to stop beer sales, not the Big XII or the Athletic Director. And, unfortunately, given CU's public perception with booze (correct or incorrect, it doesn't matter), it's unlikely to return.

As for the latecomers to the games, the student section has been late for as long as I can remember and the Boulder campus & parking makes it very difficult to go to a game without making an entire day out of it. Yes, I know that most here love doing that, but there are lots of other folks who would like to try to get other things accomplished on gameday AND make the game.

As with a lot of other things: once we start winning more than losing, the attendance will improve.

You could be right about that, BUT, when the decision was made, they said it was going to be temporary, and that if alcohol abuse in the stands subsided, then it would be made permanent. Well, there's still a lot of alcohol consumption taking place, just as was predicted. But they won't admit they were wrong, either.

True, it's still the Chancellor's call, though. And the new one to replace Petersen is unlikely to rescind the ban, unfortunately, as it'd be career-threatening. And I don't even drink anymore, so I don't really have a personal stake in this...

Ahh, but you do. If it meant that you could afford season tickets if they could use the revenues from beer sales to subsidize the ticket prices, you could benefit greatly from a lifting of the beer ban.
