At CU and UDub, he walked into situations that were pretty good. Lots of talent on hand. He was successful for a brief period of time and then the walls caved in.

At UCLA, he walked into a terrible situation. He has to build from the ground-up. Does he have the ability to do that?

I've forgiven him for his transgressions at CU. I wish him well, but I think he's in for a tough go at UCLA. Perhaps having Norm Chow there will help matters. I hope so, because he'll need all the help he can get.

I hope he chokes on it. If he fails there he cant blame it on resources.

:yeahthat:

I don't wish him the best. Not at all. He has trashed two programs, and one of them was CU. And he's still as smug and cluelessly arrogant as ever. It's not as if he's shown any sign of regretting anything he did at CU. I hope UCLA ends up going winless for a couple years before they fire his ass.

UCLA has the toughest admission requirements of any public school in the PAC-10 is a basket ball school first, and has pretty sub par facilities when compared to a number of other schools in the league notably the oregon schools, USC, and Stanford.

Tougher than Cal Berkeley?
I'd always assumed their requirements were close.

Add me to the screw New-weasel camp now and forever. I think he's a POS and I hope he fails and then drifts away from the CFB never to be heard from again.

I feel the same way.

rep.
Greasy guys like RN should not keep getting second and third chances.

I don't have any ill will for him any more. I wish him luck, if only to be a pain in the ass for SC.

For athletes, Cal has one entrance requirement: a pulse. As an athlete, its harder to get into CU than Cal. That's why Cal's graduation rates are so pathetic.

As for Neuheisel, I hate Neuheisel, but that shouldn't matter. To the extent that we recruit against UCLA, I want them to not do well. To the extent that denting USC's dominance in LA can help us, then I want them to do well.

collateral damage

who knows what those 5 schollies might have produced...

all i know is that two programs went up in flames not long after neu was put in charge of them...

i will be watching to see if he makes it three for three...

Cal and UCLA's entrance requirements for football players is much laxer than you'd expect.

I have followed Rick since I played against him in High School. He was the best QB in AZ at Tempe-McClintock (literally next door to ASU) yet was ignored by D1 schools, as were most AZ HS athletes at that time. I rooted for him to represent "us" in AZ well - which he did, walking-on at UCLA and eventually starting as a senior.

However, his coaching stints have been less than brilliant. When he took over at CU, Colorado could compete with anyone on the field AND on the recruiting trail. And although Rick could seemingly recruit, the players didn't develop the same as they did under Mac (or maybe they were over-rated?), but I think it's pretty clear that he left CU in worst shape than when he found it. The last few years were very frustrating, as the team seemed talented enough, but just didn't get over the hump. When Rick left, there was not a single D1 QB on the roster. There was a lot of talent, but not a single QB, which held CU back for 5 more years.

He took over UW, which was a decent team, and left them to flounder badly. He had a couple decent years with talent he didn't recruit, but when he left, that cupboard was bare. Frankly, if he didn't get "wrongly terminated" he would have been gone in a year or two and probably wouldn't have ever gotten the chance at UCLA.

I think Rick has matured a lot and I think he can recruit when he has a product to sell and will get great help from some top assistant coaches. The product is that UCLA is close to home for the SoCal kids and they have some highly respected assistant coaches. It really should allow them to get a lot of kids who fall short of a Trojan offer, which should put them in the #2 spot in the Pac-10 on most Letter-of-intent days.

But, I will want to see compelling evidence before I believe he is a great coach. His track record under close inspection doesn't really suggest that UCLA will become a national power. I've always questioned if his teams were tough enough to win at a high level and I think losing D. Walker as D-coordinator will prove to be a blow. Time will tell.

Carrying around ill will is bad for you and rarely, if ever, leads to anything good. Forgiveness and moving on works wonders.

Still a lot of animosity towards the guy. strange.

i lived in norcal when he was coaching, and i used to listen to koa in the evenings on occasion because their broadcast signal was strong enough to get out there during off peak hours (this was before the internet)...

i recall news reports where he flat out stated that he was not pursuing a position anywhere else...then he left. i don't think he did a very good job of preparing his team for the departure, and from my view he left the program in disarray.

that said, he is sort of a non-entity to me. i am interested in seeing how he does in his third try, but i am not losing any sleep over it either.

this is kind of the way I look at it as well. To me, there's no sense in carrying around a grudge against the guy anymore. I was pissed off at him at the time, but we've moved on, and so has he.

The only ex coach that I can honestly say I'd like to kick in the nads is Chuck Fairbanks. That man nearly destroyed CU football and had no remorse about doing so. Maybe some of the younger fans don't remember how bad he was, and only have Neuhisel to use as an example of a failed coach. If given the choice between the two, I'd take Neuhisel every day and twice on Sundays.

I hope he gags for no other reason in that we compete against many of the same athletes that UCLA goes after.

In what way was UCLA in a terrible spot when he took over. They have some ridiculously good players on their roster. You can say what you want about Karl Dorrell as a coach, but he put together a good recruiting staff, and they had some studs during his time. He wasn't taking over national championship caliber teams like here and UW, but the cupboards are not empty.

That team was in disarray. They've looked awful for the last three years. Talent or no, if a team isn't playing well, it doesn't matter.

Just incase you were curious Cal can takes more players (no idea how that works) and does so at lower requirements than UCLA, out of the horses (crying) mouth:

Cal football admissions: Neuheisel takes aim … and fires

Pac-10 football is soooooooo much more fun when Rick Neuheisel’s in the conference. He’s smart, he’s cocky, he pushes the envelope, and he’s not afraid to say what he thinks....

If you missed it, Neuheisel was recently asked about the difference in admissions for football players at Cal and UCLA — one of the most intense and longest-running debates on the Hotline.

Since they’re sister schools, you’d expect the standards to be the same. But they aren’t....
But I’m removed from it. Slick Rick is in the trenches, and he’s even willing to name names.

* Neuheisel: “I do know that they are allowed to take a few more players than we are.”
* Neuheisel: “‘Why can DeSean Jackson get into Cal, and not UCLA?’ ‘Why can Marshawn Lynch get into Cal, and not UCLA?’ Those are great questions [from Bruin fans]. But, I trust that we’re working towards having equality with Cal …”
Are the claims/complaints valid, especially regarding Jackson and Lynch?
Or is this just sour grapes from UCLA fans, whose program has been lapped by Jeff Tedford?
In my opinion, it’s both.

I am rewatching the 1998 CU v. Oregon game and Rickey told the team to "say Merry Christmas with your headgear". What a pansy.
