As he continues to progress as a major-college wide receiver, Michigan's Toney Clemons wants to do more than run dead-end routes and watch teammates catch all the passes.

He wants to be more involved offensively.

But the Valley graduate doesn't believe that will happen at Michigan, so he is leaving Ann Arbor.

Clemons, a sophomore, was been released athletically by Michigan and plans to transfer to another Division I school at the end of the spring semester.

He has not decided where he'll play next.

"It's time for me to make a change and go in another direction than what I am needed for," said Clemons, a two-year letterman who has 12 career receptions for 106 yards and no touchdowns. "I still love Michigan. It's still my No. 1. Athletically, this is the right move for me.

"I want to take my blessings and gifts elsewhere."

Clemons has not practiced with the Wolverines this spring.

NCAA regulations call for athletes who transfer from one Division I school to another to sit out one year. Clemons (6-foot-3, 205 pounds) will use the year as a redshirt season, so he'll have two more years of eligibility when he returns to football with his new school.

Toney Clemons speaks out about his decision to leave the Michigan football team

By MARK SNYDER • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER • March 25, 2009

For Toney Clemons, the decision to leave the Michigan football program was a long, drawn out consideration.

In fact, it was nearly a full season in the making.

"I want to say after the Notre Dame game," Clemons told the Free Press today via e-mail. "That was a turning point where I realized that the program was going in a different direction offensively and it seemed like those plans didn't really include me in its transformation."

Clemons, who signed to play under the previous coach, Lloyd Carr, said he didn't fit in new coach Rich Rodriguez's spread offense. The sophomore spent the rest of the season assessing whether his role would change and finally realized it wouldn't.

"I knew that I wasn't the prototype in the system playing inside at the slot position in the coaching staff's eyes, and I also knew that I personally didn't like the role that the outside wide receivers played in the offense," Clemons said.

Former Michigan wideout will look at Colorado

POSTED BY PAUL BARRETT • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER • April 14, 2009

A writer from the Daily Camera in Colorado says that former Michigan wide receiver Toney Clemons is taking a serious look at playing for the Buffaloes of Colorado. Here is a portion of the story:

Former Michigan wideout Toney Clemons said he will visit Boulder this week and is very interested in transferring to Colorado. Clemons recently decided to leave Michigan because he didn't believe his ability was being utilized effectively by coach Rich Rodriguez and his staff.

Clemons said Colorado coaches told him they have a scholarship on hold for him if he likes what he finds when he arrives either Thursday or Friday. He would have to sit out next season under NCAA transfer rules and would have two years of eligibility remaining, beginning in 2010. Clemons will be the second wide receiver to visit the Buffs in as many weeks.

Auburn freshman using the power of Facebook to recruit for the Tigers
By Ben Volin | Thursday, March 26, 2009, 02:28 PM

Auburn freshman quarterback Tyrik Rollison is making life a lot easier for new coach Gene Chizik on the recruiting front.

Rollison, a four-star quarterback prospect from Sulphur Springs, Texas who will join the Tigers this fall, utilized the far-reaching power of Facebook Wednesday to try to bring former Michigan receiver Toney Clemons to Auburn.

“”He is no longer with Michigan and is looking for a new place to ball,” Rollison wrote in a public note on Facebook. “We could use him at WR and I was asking for your help. Send him a message saying how much Auburn could use and how much you would like to see him on our squad. Anything from the heart will go a long way. Thanks for the help.”
Rollison also posted Clemons’ Facebook page, a photo and a video of Clemons’ high school highlights.

Profile of Future Michigan Football Star Toney Clemons

The Cousin of Terrelle Pryor Could Be Huge for UM Next Year

A top ten WR recruit from the 2007 class, Clemons hopes to find his way onto the field this in 2008 as a member of UM's crowded receiving corps.

At 6-foot-3 with a smooth stride, great body control, and great hands, it only made sense that Michigan Freshman WR" href="http://deathrattlesports.com/michigan-wolverines/football/michigan-freshman-wr-toney-clemons.html">Toney Clemons would end up going to Michigan. It seems as if the Wolverines have a machine somewhere in Ann Arbor that clones these

types of receivers every year. Clemons fits just about every prototype the Wolverines have for the position.

His route-running skills are a bit raw right now, but that is mainly due to the fact that Clemons could simply box out defenders and use his superior frame and leaping ability to go up and get the ball over top of the them on most occasions. Clemons makes the spectacular catch look routine and reminds me of former Michigan star Marquise Walker, albeit much faster. Walker also made a lot of acrobatic catches but never caught on in the NFL due to lack of speed. Clemons could be even better.

Tyrik Rollison: Future QB/Recruiter

apart from being the nation's #2 dual threat qb, having awesome hair, and being the future of the Auburn football program...it also seems that Tyrik Rollison is turning into a recruiter as well.

via his facebook page, Tyrik is calling out to all his Auburn friends to send messages to former Michigan wideout Toney Clemons telling the young man to come make Auburn his new home.

I'm trying to get my man Toney Clemons to come play for Auburn. He is no longer with Michigan and is looking for a new place to ball. We could use him at WR and I was asking for your help. Send him a message saying how much Auburn could use and how much you would like to see him on our squad. Anything from the heart will go a long way. Thanks for the help

Clemons responded with this,
I want to thank you all for the support. It means alot to me to know there are people that dont truly know me to have my back and welcome and wish me well. I am seriously looking into Auburn and I have plans of contacting the university to see what the interest level and situation would be for me there. I have no problem competing with the best ... Read Moretalent daily to win and keep a job and I have no aspirations of going into a situation where things would be easy for me because competition within a program is what truly makes a player better and I know Auburn has that on both sides of the ball. I just want the opportunity to be able to showcase my skills in a manner that will benefit me and the program that I am involved with. Thanks again

And my facebook names comes from the nickname of my last name Clemons and My moms maiden name and my middle name Vaughn. for anybody that was confused of how I got the name lol

again thank you all. it means alot.
so yeah...the Internet strikes again. and i wasn't even gonna talk about football or facebook today.

Embarrassed straight

Two-sport star learned grade lesson from his mother

A collage that hangs in the bedroom of Valley (New Kensington, Pa.) senior Toney Clemons features the numerous accolades and newspaper clippings he's accrued as a football and track star.

It serves as a nice reminder of all the hard work he's put in to achieve such success. However, the collage isn't 100 percent positive. Amid all the good stuff, you'll find an article from a 2004 Valley News Dispatch headlined "Valley's Clemons Ruled Ineligible."

The article is about the time Clemons was ruled academically ineligible for both the WPIAL championships and the PIAA state meet during his freshman track season. Clemons' mother, Tonie, actually called the paper to break the news and hoped the embarrassment would teach her son a lesson. Guess what? It worked.

Isn't this some kind of NCAA violation now??

Not technically... I think the new rule is that you're not allowed to create a facebook group to recruit or write on the recruit's wall. The Auburn kid is asking for help in the form of private messages to the recruit, which isn't displayed publicly so the NCAA may have a hard time proving the violation. That is my guess.

Tyrik Rollison...the guy that got a 13 or something on his ACT. If he goes to Auburn I will be pissed.

The rule came about due to a facebook group that was created for John Wall by NCState fans. John Wall is the highest rated bball recruit this year.

I figure if the NCAA is going to create a facebook ban on recruiting, it would cover groups, but I imagine that it'd be hard to control fans' private messages and writing on someone's wall - as those can be controlled by the recruit.

I wonder however if there will be differences between HS recruiting and recruiting of transfers. I think there are stark differences between transfers and HS players, and Auburn is doing legal things. I might be wrong though.

Saw the Buffzone version on the same article and came looking for this thread. Clemons came away from his trip awed by Boulder, so there's certainly a strong reason to feel good about the chance he'll come here.

He was ranked as highly when he came out as any WR prospect we've seen in a long time. Gotta love Scout's description.
