What a former player told me in the summer of 2007

Back in the spring of 2007, a friend and I were looking to take former college football players who were unsuccessful in the NFL and turn them into pro rugby players. I spoke with Coach Cabral about this, and he recommended former Buff LB Akarika Dawn: http://www.leaguehq.com.au/news/news/forget-nfl-nrl-is-dream/2007/06/16/1181414609893.html.

While rugby did not work out for Akarika, more due to his being separated in Australia from his family rather than his athleticism and potential talent for the game, I did ask him on one occasion what he thought of the Hawkins hire. To paraphrase, he seemed to think Hawkins was more talk than substance. At the time, I thought he was just being loyal to Barnett, but it is clear now how right he was. I just wish the sunshine pumpers would see the light. Bieniemy, Gill, Shanny, Embree, Tuberville, Harbaugh or even Dave Christensen would be far superior to this clown and would bring far more credibility to the program. Hang onto Cabral, Hagan and Brown and gut the rest of this staff.

I agree with you 100% on the coaches you'd like to keep. If we had healthy, eligible receivers on the roster like we may coming into next year, I may want Kiesau around too, back at receivers coach and especially for West Coast recruiting purposes. I really like the potential of Dave Christensen and am glad you brought him up. Right now there are five really strong teams in the MWC and it may seem next to impossible to win at Wyoming. Lack of talent may hurt his stock in Laramie but I don't doubt his coaching ability at all yet. We should definitely give him a look when the time comes to get another head coach.

"What a former player told me...."

Wondering what the consensus is among current players.

Most often players back the reigning HC all the way, but if things are bad enough and sad enough some will speak out or at least let something leak to the public.

The majority of CU fans are just beginning to realize how much of a talker Hawkins is and how much substance he really has.

Bieniemy - While a good recruiter he has no experience at even the co-ordinator level.

Shanny - pipe dream STFU about this, he'll be coaching the 'Boys next year.

Embree - Good recruiter, no experience

Harbaugh- not bloody likely to leave for CU, the only thing we have over the 'furd is game attendance and weaker admissions standards. They can pay more, have better facilities, and right now will give him what ever he wants, they just spent 70K putting a bathroom in his office so he could work more.

Dave Christensen- Great lets go get a guy who took 5+ years to start winning with Pinkle, and who for all we've seen of Wyoming could be a terrible head coach.

Gill- While i think he'd be a stratospherically good hire; the only way we get him is if someone bigger doesn't come knocking at the same time.

Tubbs - might just work out, depends how bad he wants back into coaching, and if he'd be willing to hire a decent OC.

The point about Dawn is that if he never actually played under the guy he doesn't know a lot more about him than any other person getting second hand feedback, and worse he's likely to be a little jaded and loyal to Barrnett. That is a fair point to make, and nothing near as obnoxious as the Hawk/Klatt thing.

Hawkins-to-Klatt-style. Nice. I guess we should just shut this board down because all of our insight is useless having never played for Almighty Hawkins.

I will agree 100% that someone whom has never played directly for a Coach can be considered even close to informed enough to make a decision on whether a coach is "all talk"....or whatever opinion you might want to through out.

There is a lot that goes on behind closed doors that no one will ever see unless they are part of the team....period.

With that being said, I had thoroughly supported Hawk up to this last game. I now find myself in a position where I think he has to prove that he is the right guy, this year, or something needs to change.

I should clarify. He said he talked too much for his liking rather than saying he was all talk. But the point still stands that it was a fairly perceptive comment. BTW, it wasn't said with any hint of ill will towards Hawkins. Aren't you tired of all the Zen and all of the lies (Cody/Hansen, D Scott injured, etc.) rather than seeing success on the field?

I speak to former Buffs frequently from the GB era, what they tell me is there is something missing from the practices that they had and what they see of Hawks practices. The missing ingredient is physical and mental. No heart and passion to get better. You don't become a better player in games, you improve your game in practice.

No. Zen, shmen. I could care less if he handed out flowers to the team before a game....as long as it was effective. I have heard the guy up close, and know that he can be fiery. As far as the lies, I do not see that he has "lied" anywhere....this is simply an interpretation by some in the fan base. It seems to me that he was honest with TH when they discussed the RS and who would start...that is the ONLY thing that matters as far as I am concerned. DS....who knows what that was.....but I can't imagine that hawk has any reason to LIE about him being hurt. I would think that it is more likely that it was a mis-quote or taken out of context.

Back to the zen/motivation. What I saw on Sunday was one of two things. Either Hawk dropped the ball in getting a young team with 8?? guys making their first start, ready to play.....or the team isn't listening and he cannot motivate them effectively, period.

If it is the former, we will be able to tell in the next few games...and with time and success, a mistake like that is excusable. The latter? then Hawk needs to go.

Jury's still out on Kiesau. He's well-liked by players and staff, is very smart, recruits very well, and has a definite vision for what he wants an offense to look like. There are so many positives that I believe we need to be patient and see what he does with the offense over the course of the season. Also, we need to see how much Cody improves as the season progresses. We may have a star in this guy who just struggled in his first game under the lights. Tomorrow night we'll see how quickly he adjusts and pulls things together.

That's fair enough Buffnik. Kiesau has had only one game and seemed to panic. Certainly not the end of a career, but I think we need to see some improvement and more importantly to learn from his mistakes. That is my biggest problem with Hawkins: he refuses to learn from his mistakes and just digs in his heels.

Here's Chez's reply to my facebook post about how frustrated I was with the game and coaches.

All this nothing new! We lost 2 Montana St., we got beat 58-0 last year at mizzou. We lose 2 Kansas every year now! I never lost 2 Kansas! Soft mother****ers!

Can we get Matt McCHesney to Toledo to give a pregame speech? That might be the most quality thing ever posted on facebook....

Ehhh, kinda weak IMHO. Kansas is a little different now. And, I remember everybody and their mothers being a little frustrated after his team got beat by Fresno State. Soft mother****er.

You want to call him soft mother****er to his face? I can arrange

Yep, I'd tell him thats a weak ass quote. Maybe before he rips the team, he should look in the mirror. They're kids. Had a former player called him a soft mother****er for losing to Fresno I'd have said the same thing...its weak. Maybe he should stay off Napster or whatever the hell he got banned for, focus on married life, and lay off the 18 year old players. Support would be nice.

He does support, you don't know what he puts into the University still, I do. You dont know about his personal life, I do. Oh and he is not the only former player ripping on the buffs, in fact there are lots some even publicly like Victor Rogers, Alfred Williams and Joel Klatt.

Really? I thought I heard them complaining about coach's or people that are paid significant amounts of money to see the team win. I'll have to re-examine my notes for when Klatt called the players a bunch of soft mother****ers.

and the in-fighting begins....

that is what losing does to the masses.

I am putting in the tape of the 2001 CU-NU game now....

Hack love is in affect. That guy has done wonders for unifying the Buff Nation under an umbrella of poise and confidence!

Listen, Im not fighting. I liked MM the player, havent heard a word from him since then, because I, in no way, know him. Im just saying, that one quote is weak as **** to me. I do know alot of these players and they're busting their balls. Call Hawk a soft mother****er and thats fine with me, players are a different matter.

This CU team IS soft, it's the coaches not the players on why they are soft. Thats what Matt is talking about. He doesn't like the coaching staff and they have made his team very soft.

Ehhh, I disagree that they're soft. If he's talking about the coaching staff---I have absolutely no issue. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, I just interpreted it as going after college kids who are pouring their heart and soul in this---and to me, thats soft. If he meant Hawk and Co., my bad.

SO how much longer must we suffer in mediocrity? Arent we about due for some good luck? I think we have suffered enough in purgatory, it's time the Buffs start coming back to respectability and hopefully on to excellence on the field.

Yes, that is what he means. He is a proud buff, and just like you and me, he hates seeing whats going on right now.
