Mister Jones Going to Look at Backup Plans

According to Ringo on Scout.

“I mean, it’s obvious,” Jones said when asked why he has decided to schedule visits. “They lost to like Toledo and Colorado State the last couple weeks. The CU program isn’t doing too good right now.”

-and-

He said several players revved up the team before coach Dan Hawkins uncharacteristically cooled things down . It left Jones scratching his head.

“It was like coach didn’t even really say nothing,” Jones said. ‘They did a prayer and then some of the players got the team pumped, and coach Hawkins was like, ‘Well, you guys already know what to do. So do what is expected of you and don’t do too much.’ That’s all he said.

Other stuff in the article (premium) that's positive about Hagan among other things.

I don't like that, but on the other hand I really don't give anything Ringo posts there too much weight. His track record is less than stellar in the accuracy department....

Recruiting is going to be terrible this year. At this point, other schools will simply tell our recruits hawkins will be fired.

Priceless.

And after such a public condemnation of Hawkins, no way Mister Jones comes to Colorado. Might as well cross him off our list right now.

And this is where you take a big risk by allowing Hawk to come back for 2010 regardless of what happens this year. Recruiting is heading into the crapper. Combine that with last year's subpar class (especially after the non-qualifiers) and it is not a pretty sight.

Damn it, from 4 recruits to 3, this will kill our ranking.......:smile2:

:wow: Well that happened quickly. How long until Spond backs off and wants to find a coach that will actually be his coach so he can get a shot at QB? Hirschmann was having a number of good camps, if he plays well someone could scoop him up too. It certainly got ugly quickly.

What disgusts me is I doubt that Mister Jones looked up Kyle Ringo's number and started babbling.

The more likely scenario is that Kyle, trying to look like he has inside information, called Jones and said "considering there are rumors that Hawkins will be gone after this year, are you rethinking your committment to the buffs?"

No, I am not kidding.

Ringo is a flipping idiot with our recruits.

Between Ringo and AZ, it is easier to understand the distaste the CU AD has for the internet... I find it incomprehensible that people pay money for their acts...

This whole situation is just getting worse and worse.. what will happen if we lose to Wyoming of all teams next week?

Ouch.... This is odd since he was talking to Chris Martin the whole game about being a Buff

This is beyond frustrating right now.. :bang:

I'm about to explode, but I'm going to crack open a Corona instead of ranting and raving on the allbuffs board..

I wonder if Mister Jones would reaffirm his commitment if we get a new coach in here by year end? He still sounds like he wants to stay close to home, he just doesn't want to take part in the Scott 1 carry mess that is currently unfolding.

Well we all know what should happen. As far as recruiting goes, it's really no surprise there. Kids arent stupid, their not going to jump ON a sinking ship. Bohn and Hack can say (or not say) anything they want, the fans, the Big XII, the media, the whole CFB world, AND the HS kids know we are in a death spiral.

The AD needs to do something else to instill confidence in the program because holding on to his pick is NOT working.

Jones wants to be a buff. That hasn't changed. The question he was asked is, would your commitment change if you thought there would be a new coach and you didn't know who it would be?

duh.

If the coaches make it clear they are staying, they can save this. CU is the best place for Mister Jones. Keep Kyle and his ridiculous, leading questions away from recruits.

Remember he was the guy who pestered Ballenger with questions that implied things Kyle didn't know either. He fishes for information by misleading people in interviews, then reports their response to his "insider" questions as news.

Reporters should not have an effect on recruiting, but it is happening.

Oh come on Jasper. You may be right about the specific situation with Jones, but you cannot tell me that our struggles are not affecting recruiting now. We are a trainwreck right now, any decent recruit is going to rethink where we stand with them. If the coaches stay after we go 3-9, it is not like we're going to have our pick of 4* or 5* players. It started with the 2009 class and is continuing with this class, recruiting is sliding big time.

We lost two games. Recruits notice, yes. But having the hometown reporter ask leading questions THAT ARE NOT BASED IN FACT is a crappy twist that I have not seen happy in many other places.

I am saying that we would not be talking about Jones and possible visits except that Ringo put that idea in Jones' head. I truly believe that.

Would it have happened anyway? Well, maybe. But the news would be "Mister Jones schedules official visits to other schools" NOT "Camera reporter tells top recruit that coach will be gone this year, puts cloud of doubt over commitment."

Seriously, do not underestimate how much damage Kyle Ringo does BECAUSE he has access to recruits. He creates the news first, then reports it.

Maybe it's my imagination but since '06 I've noticed a kind of barely veiled scorn from Ringo towards the program. In light of how putrid we are it's understandable but he's ostensibly an 'objective' journalist. Asking leading questions to impressionable young guys is not helping matters for sure. That said if hawk and company had even a shred of credibility left a two bit local yokel writer wouldn't even be an issue. This recruiting cycle is going to be like watching a terrible car accident happening in slow motion. Just..can't..stop..looking.

What do you think would happen in Michigan if the FREEP reporter went TO A COMMITTED RECRUIT (we'll call him Johnny) and said "in light of the fact that Rich Rodriguez is going to be fired this season, are you still confident in your decision to play for UM?"

And little Johnny, who still has limited contact with coaches during the season, is 100% blindsided and coughs up an answer like "well, I'd have to look at my options..." and then the story becomes "top commit looking at options, opens recruitment."

Then people within the program start treating Johnny differently because he's no longer committed (in their minds) and even talk to other second-choice recruits because they aren't sure about #1 Johnny anymore.

Johnny gets uncomfortable with what's happening and DOES start talking to other colleges.

That's what I believe happened here. I may be in the minority, but that's my perception. And in CU's case, Kyle then pats himself on the friggen back because he thinks he BROKE THE STORY, when in fact he created it.

Do you have evidence to support your claim that he planted the seed in Jones' head? The way the excerpts read, Jones has already scheduled visits with other schools, and Ringo was asking him why.

Maybe he actually did what you said, but without evidence it seems kind of "conspiracy theoryish."

Also, if Jones is disgusted by CU getting whipped by CSU and Toledo, and Hawkins cooling the team down pre-game, I think a reporter talking about the coach that did that getting fired would be a positive, not a negative.

It is also not surprising that CU is losing out on recruits after poor performances on national television. People tend to prefer to play with winning teams, not losing ones.
