Not buying out Hawkins will be more costly in the long run.

If the season is a bust, we can’t afford not to fire Hawkins.

CU spends over 30 million dollars on the football program alone each year. It is the only sport that makes money, and in fact supports the other sports. 3 million over 3 years is 3.33% of the annual budget.

What will be the long term loss of revenue if Hawkins stays?
1. Which network wants to televise a bad team? How many fans are lost because they can’t watch the Buffs.
2. Fans who buy tickets, food, apparel… will stop supporting the buffs. How long do you lose them for? Who will replace them?
3. Can you ask the remaining fans for more money to make up the loss without losing even more?
(I almost dropped my ticket because they raised prices during a national crisis)
4. Look at the student body seats this weekend, I bet we see at least ¼ less students. My nephew is at CU this year and says that most students don’t care about football anymore.
5. Last I heard there were 10,000 seats left for a game with a collage less than 2 hours away.
6. The longer the program is irrelevant, the harder it is to draw talent to the team. That makes the rebuilding process even longer and even more revenue will be lost.

I can’t help but think it is short sighted not to conceder the long term damage keeping Hawkins will do.

Bohn isn't so shortsighted that he'll can Hawk before the end of the season. He's also a bright guy. He understands the economics of the deal. He knows that football is the engine that runs the entire athletic department. Without a viable product on the field, revenues dry up.

The bottom line is that it's obvious that Hawk is incompetent. Bohn can see that just as easily as we can. He was fed the same line that the rest of us were. He's probably just as pissed about it as we are. Now it's just a matter of timing and putting together the funds to buy him out.

The problem is, even if it makes financial sense in the long run, you need $3M in your pocket before you can make that decision. Where does that money come from?? The school isn't going to loan the AD more money to fire someone, so it's up to donors if there's even a chance, which I think is slim.

Yeah, there is no excuse for what we are seeing on the field and from the AD. If they say the buyout is too expensive, then they aren't trying hard enough. Losing is too expensive.

As long as they say the buyout costs too much, that only tells me that they are betting that Hawkins can turn this this thing around. Problem for us is, the people making that bet obviously don't know jack about football because this coach is done.

And we are back to Cash Flow vs Cost as stated above, we dont have 3mil laying around, and no one is going to loan us money right now given the dpt's finances.

You will never hear the AD say the buyout is too much. All that does is tell the coach "we would fire you if we had the money, but we can't". You think Hawk is unmotivated now, imagine if this was the message he was getting from the top. He might be sitting on the sidelines in a lounge chair with flip flops on drinking iced tea, every once in a while turning to Cabral and asking "what's the score?"

Sounds like a plan!

CU football is big bussiness. When a bussiness is in trouble they need to tighten their belts and make changes, or be forced to downsize. I think CU athletics can find 3.33% af waste to cut, in order to make firing Dan happen. The boosters will come up with the salery for the next HC if they fell he is the right guy.

All this is moot if they manage to get Shanahan as coach. Shanny doesn't need any salary for the first couple years. We'd actually SAVE money by firing Hawk now.

 ... why in the hell would shanny work for free?

Is it bad form for our local reporters to begin evaluating who would possibly be interested in the job? For example, if we knew Shanahan would take the job for $1.00/yr, couldn't we fire Talkins immediately?

And if we knew that we could get another coach (Turner Gill, etc) for less money than what we're paying Talkins to talk and not coach, would the ROI be enough to justify that we take the initial cash hit now?

And by the way, if Talkins were to be fired today, would he be due his ~$3 mil upfront, or could that be paid in installments similar to a regular paycheck - that would impact the cash flow situation that absinthe keeps referencing.

 ... why in the hell would shanny work for free?

I believe there's some verbage in Shanahan's contract with the Broncos that if he takes another job, Bowlen only owes him the difference between what he would then be making and what he was paid as the HC of the Broncos - so it would then be in Shanny's best interest to take the CU job for free so he could still stick it to Bowlen and take his money...

And stay in Denver to live in his new mansion and continue trying to sell his $17,000,000 little-er mansion

Just don't see that happening, but hey, better to dream than to live in the sad reality that is the buff football world atm  ... besides, I think it would hurt recruiting since Shanny could leave at any time...

i can barely imagine a scenario where shanny would coach at CU.

not buying out hawk = plummeting ticket sales and declining tv revenue.

it is a math question...

you model the cost of the buyout out now versus the declining revenue if he stays.

i'd take just about any new hc as long as it isn't another rook from the minor leagues.

my preference would be a coordinator from an elite program. but, i'd take embree, heater, strong, gill, tuberville, or just about any other experienced hand you can mention.

i have a difficult time foreseeing a worse result that what we are currently experiencing. a loss to wyo and can this guy possibly survive another week?

they need to get this turned around right now and show they can win some games.

What's with all this Shanahan talk? I thought he sucked? At least, that was the majority of opinions on the Pub at the end of last season.

I think the general consensus was that Mike Shanahan the General Manager sucked, but Mike Shanahan the head coach was top tier

Shanny is a very good coach who had just stayed in the same job to long. He and the Broncos both needed something different but I still believe he would be a great coach.

Normally an NFL head coach's contract only includes a salary offset if he takes another NFL job. My understanding is that if Shanny were to take a college job he would still collect 100% of what Bowlen owes him in addition to any college salary.

I have no idea is Shanny would consider going to Boulder but I think he would be a great college coach. He knows football, knows people, is a motivator, is an organizer with an eye for every detail. His name would get him into the living room of virtually any recruit he wanted to talk to and his personality would let him close on a lot of them.

I don't see him as having lost any of his competitiveness but at the same time being older the college game is of a year around time consuming job. He might like getting away from the guys who think they are gods gift because they have (or will get) a fat contract.

I think a lot of folks had come to the conclusion that he remained a solid game day coach and was good at preparing the team for the games. Where he was having issues was his evaluation of talent. Bringing in guys like Dale Carter & captain IHOP was his undoing.

What CU needs right now is a guy who can get his team prepared to play it's opponent. Somebody who can scout both his opponents tendencies and his own.

I don't think it's likely that he'd coach here, but there are some compelling reasons to think he might consider it.

Hey, don't get me wrong. I'd LOVE him to be in Boulder. I just found it odd after the beating he took last season.

Here's a solution: we hire Shanny for $1M per year and if he's willing to loan the AD $3M we'll pay him back with interest from the fat check we get when he wins a mNC.

I know that the conventional wisdom is that he'll be taking over in Dallas after they inevitably get rid of Wade, but the one thing about Shanahan is that he wants control. I don't think he & Jerry Jones could co-exist for this reason - and maybe one more compelling reason that he'd consider college - recruiting would give Shanny a GM role of sorts in which he could constantly bring in new talent year after year - something that he seemed to like.

Since college football is so much more about talent (NFL is where smarts, team players, etc are more important), I've got to imagine that the talent Shanny would bring in would be top tier.

Lastly, let's look at it like this: Winning pays. The one and only time we went to a BCS bowl game, we came home with $13 mil (which helped finance our stadium addition). That paycheck alone is enough to take the AD from red to black - so while it sounds like some schools try to buy their wins, it is more like a good investment. Pete Carroll is paid $4.5 mil/yr, but every time he even shows up in a BCS game, there's a $13-$15 mil check...winning more than pays for itself. And after the AD gets its top notch facilities and top tier coaches & coordinators, the money begins to flow into the university as a whole – which should help get some of the hippies and Naropa-university types to buy into making the initial investment. Just my $.02

The conference gets the BCS checks. The participant gets an extra share in the Big 12. That's how I remember it being, anyway. So if the check is $13mm, the participating team gets $2mm and everyone else gets $1mm. Still nice to have, no doubt, but it's not quite the same kind of windfall as if you get it all yourself.

Good to know...sorry I got that mixed up

Look at it this way, we're no longer a power house football program and we're not just going to attract a big name coach by our name alone. We don't have it in our budget to pay a big name coach the big dollars that he's going to want and we're not going to offer him a big enough budget to attract the quality assitants that it's going to need to help turn this around. We don't have many options, keeping hawkins for a few more years may not hurt, but then again it if he doesn't improve this year and the next year it may set our program back even further. I just don't see us going out in the market and paying a guy 2.5 - 3 Mil a season.

unless you are notre dame and you manage to cross the super-low bar they set for them to get into a bcs bowl. then you get to keep the 13mm all yourself because there is no conference to split it with.

neato, huh?

Well, if we do so well when other teams in our conference win BCS games, Bohn's new plan should be to keep Hawk around and see how much we can boost UT's BCS standings so we can help them get to the championship game. If they win, then we get paid!
