I don’t get Bohn’s unyielding support of Hawkins.

Go with me on this. Bohn is the CEO of a high profile company. He has a high profile employee who is not only embarrassing the company but putting it in financial peril. I don’t get that as CEO he is showing unwavering support for the way the employee is conducting his business. Doesn’t he have a responsibility to the stockholders? Doesn’t it make more since to let the stockholders know that you have talked to the employee and he knows he needs to correct the problems, because it is unacceptable to continue the way they are? To reassure the stockholders that you are in control and being proactive about protecting the company. That you are his boss and not the employees apologist. As CEO your job is to protect the company not the employees you hire.

Why is Bohn being a cheerleader and not a leader? I don’t get it, what am I missing?

Because he needs to make sure the high profile employee doesn't just mail it in. And it would make the University look even worse if Bohn were publicly bashing his coach; no one else wants to work in that kind of environment.

Because as AD his wagon is hitched to his star hire. He is, and should be, afraid that if Hawk plummets he might plummet right along with him. So we get the ostrich routine.

Bohn hired him. Then, before Hawkins proved he could win consistently, Bohn gave him an extension.

Bohn is every bit as culpable for this mess as Hawk. Had he not extended him, I'd be cutting him a lot more slack. Hiring the right people isn't easy. I get that. But you don't give them lucrative long-term guaranteed contracts until they prove they're right for the job.

It's an athletic department at a public university and not a publicly traded company. Who are the stockholders? We're fans, that's a big difference. Bohn simply cannot do anything right now as far as getting rid of Hawk, assuming he wants to. So, what good would it do to stand there and say, "Our coach sucks but there's nothing I can do."?

Basically, it's an apples and oranges comparison so I can't follow your logic, sorry.

He does not have a spare $2.5mil lying around to give to Hawkins to kick him to the curb.

He probably wont have a spare $1mil next year to pay him to leave either. So he is stuck.

I'm sure in private they have talked about how poor things are going. But he is not going to come out in public and bash Hawk. Bohn can't come out

Unless someone (insert donor name here) writes Bohn a large check. He can't come out and say Hawk is coaching for his job.

You can be critical without bashing a person. Haven't you ever been asked to change the way you did something without being bashed. It is possible to support a person without supporting everything they do.

I agree that in hind sight the Hawkins hire was a bad call and have no answer what-so-ever for the extension. I don't agree that the AD and Coach are a package deal. If the AD proves that he is always working to improve the programs, he normally survives a few bad calls. But as you say, Bohn has hitched his wagon to Hawkins and going along for the ride. That seems stupid to me.

So my question is not about Bohn’s record but about his attitude?

I think you nailed it but don't you think Bohn would have more fear of self preservation then to stick his head in the sand.

I actually dont have a problem with Bohn and hope he survives this debacle. The dude is a tireless cheerleader for CU and our athletics. The only mistake he's made, IMO, is the extension. Hiring Hawk was nationally perceived to be a great move. The dude was considered the next big thing by MANY people/AD's.

Maybe it was Chris Petersen and not Hawkins who was responsible for a dynamic offense at Boise State.

Agreed. The extension was such a huge **** up, though, that Hawk might take Bohn down with him.

Without the extension, we could be rid of Hawk at season's end for $850k. With the extension, the number is $2 million plus. That's a pretty big 'uh-oh' kind of deal.

Maybe. But nobobody, including those people at Boise, were saying that when we hired Hawkins. Not Bohn's fault, IMO. The extension was an epic **** up, though. No way around that.

What does Hawk get out of it if he voluntary resigns as head coach? Maybe he can do us a favor and leave after the seasons over with.

Would you walk away from $2+ million that was guaranteed to you? I don't know many who would...

I follow his logic... but he is wrong.... Bohn can't just fire ad hire... that is not his job.... his job is to run an athletic department. There is a contract in place and he has to deal with that contract with the resources available to him. If Bohn had the resources to fire him, then he might do that. If he doesn't, he has to find another method to attempt to fix this.

We have no idea what is taking place behind closed doors. Mike Bohn was hired to handle that and we have to let him.

We all want to be the AD today.... but we can't. You have NO CHOICE but to follow what Bohn does until he no longer holds that position...

And there you have it. :sad2:

I don't recall what drove Bohn to give him the extension, was this soon after the win over OU? Was Hawk's name coming up in rumors for other jobs? What?

Cause this is the smart thing to do. Marshall the troops (boosters), get the necessary supplies ready ($), and THEN invade France (WW2, Germany). You don't ****ing announce what you are gonna do when all it would do is hurt the future.

We've been over this. Look at how bohn acted with Barnett.

I think it was to help Talkins to continue to recruit well...if only Bohn knew that once he had the players, he would bench them in favor of slow, small walk-ons

Maybe he'll realize that we've already over paid him and that our AD was a MORON for giving him a contract extension for not winning any games.

I disagree on this point. Looking back, when bohn granted the extension (reported in the BDC on 10/7/08), CU had gone from 2-10 to a bowl game in which they nearly beat 'Bama - a team that at the time of the extension was a top 10 team - and beaten ranked WVU. He had also done very well on the recruiting front - Miller, Scott, Major, Katoa, Givens, Deehan, MTM, Simas - all 4 and 5 star guys. The purpose of the extension was to show that he would be around in the future. A coach with one year on his contract and no extension has a hard sell to a recruit. The extension was necessary and no one, at the time, saw this year coming.

I think if you ask anyone from Boise they would agree.

We hired the wrong dood.

Maybe. But nobobody, including those people at Boise, were saying that when we hired Hawkins. Not Bohn's fault, IMO.

Agree, Petersen does appear to be the guy with the magic.

Amen brotha. Several on this very board (probably myself included) were screaming for an extension. At the time, Hawk had every appearance of a guy who had it all figured out. The trends were up, and we needed to make sure we were following that trend all the way to the top. We were more afraid of losing Hawk than we were of keeping him.

Life's a bitch, ain't it?

Hawkins' original contract was for 5 years, running through the end of the 2010 season. While I agree with the point about a coach with one year left on his contract being hamstrung, Hawkins was not in that situation. There was no reason whatsoever why the extension was "necessary" a year ago....

fair point, although 2 years ain't much better. the recruit is making a decision for the next 4 or 5 years.

Seems to be a real catch 22. give the guy an extension and risk having to buy him out, or have a lame-duck coach who has a bad recruiting class ever 3 or 4 years.
