Cody's yearly passer rating from his 2nd thru 4th year in the program:

2007: 119.94
2008: 118.14
2009: 106.65

Here are the overall stats:

2007: 56.8 CMP%, 6.51 YPA, 1.29 TD-INT Ratio, 1.15 Sacks-Game Ratio
2008: 57.2 CMP%, 5.91 YPA, 1.70 TD-INT Ratio, 1.58 Sacks-Game Ratio*
2009: 53.0 CMP%, 5.63 YPA, 1.25 TD-INT Ratio, 2.67 Sacks-Game Ratio

*3 partial games played in 2008 skews sacks/game low

Every year, Cody has gotten more conservative. This is evidenced by his reducing YPA number and the fact he's taking more sacks instead of forcing throws. This has not, however, resulted in an improvement in completion percentage or TDs/INTs.

In my opinion, it's got to be 1 of 3 things:

1- Opposing defensive coordinators have realized Cody's limitations and have figured out a gameplan blueprint that he struggles against.

2- CUs quarterback coaching has been bad and has done nothing to develop Cody into a better player than he was as a RS-Freshman.

3- The offensive talent surrounding Cody (O-Line & Skill Positions) isn't as good as it was in 2007. Maybe because of guys that have left the program, maybe because we've missed on recruiting targets, maybe because the bulk of snaps don't go to our best athletes... or maybe all of this.

And maybe it's a combination of all 3 of these points. The scariest thing to me is that we may have just faced the 3 worst defenses on our schedule.

Can anyone think of anything else that would explain what's going on? Maybe something that would give a bit of hope that things might get better?

I'm beginning to think Cody has peaked already. I was thinking last year was a bit of a sophomore slump, but that isn't the case.

I think it is a combo of all three, but #1 is the biggest reason for his struggles. Opposing defensive coordinators know he cannot throw the deep ball, they know his passes can be batted down, and they know he cannot make plays with his feet among several other factors. It is pretty easy to gameplan against him.

I'd go with one and two on your list. Poor kid, he is right at the center of the controversy and he just doesn't have the stuff to answer the bell

Cody has been the same QB since he started playing. We remember him being better in 2007 because we won more games.

What's very telling, is the increase in sacks/game from 2007-2008-2009.

All three reasons are a major factor though.

You can see as games go on, defenses adjust and effectively just stop covering parts of the field. I believe it's also a major reason why we can come out hot in some games, like WVU last year, and then the offense just grinds to a halt.

I also feel like, after 3 years in the system, his decision making just isn't where it should be, which falls directly on the coaching.

Of course, he spends a lot of time running for his life.

I have said for a long time that after Cody's first 7 games the book is out on him. Even the Toledo coach said they knew they had to get a hand in Cody's face and keep him moving and that he would make bad decisions.

It is mostly reason #1. He does not have the physical ability to make his own passing lanes. They take those away from him and he is in trouble. Todd Reesing is short but he is mobile enough to move around to find a passing lane.

It's reason #1. Starting after the win against Tech in 2007, Big 12 coaches have had Cody's number. Our OOC opponents picked up on it after the FSU loss last year. They just move the safeties up tight and blitz the **** out of him.

Double whammy. Stifles our running game too.:bang:

The guy doesn't have much to throw to. And when we do get speed on the field it's pretty obvious they are running a deep route. One thing I liked about the Wyo game is that he put the ball in places that only the WR could catch it. I'd rather see that then for the ball to be in a place where a DB can make a play on the ball.

With Cody, you take what you can get. He's supposed to be a smart player that knows the offense and doesn't make mistakes. Unfortunately, he's made some pretty big mental errors in the last couple years, but I'll attribute that to him still being young. Last week is what I've come to expect from Cody. He just needs to make the necessary throws (See 3rd down and long play to Scotty in the first half of Wyo) and limit the turnovers.

I'll take ugly wins. It doesn't need to be pretty. Run the ball, keep the defense off the field, capitalize on opportunities when we get them and play solid defense! Unfortunately, we aren't a very composed or well-coached team and that doesn't go hand in hand with the traits I just listed. We have way too many drive killing penalties, mistakes (See Iltis snapping an extra point over Cody) and blown plays.

i bet cody can outhrow any of our receivers. do they ever run down the field? who is our fastest receiver that plays?

CH has had his production decline since mid-07 becasue DC's have seen his limitations. He just is not aplaymaker, it isn't going to get any better. If CU is stuck with this level of performance at QB, .500 is the best you'll see.

I think it's pretty much agreed that opposing defenses have got Cody figured out and force him to make bad decisions. Although a few times a game I ask myself why he's scrambling. It seems sometimes that he is running towards the sideline and it doesn't look like a designed roll out.

IMO it is because he can't see and he's trying to get a view downfield, and he has a case of happy feet. I can't say I really blame him for the happy feet, he took a beating last year.
