Charlie Strong for HC

I don't post here much, but feel like voicing my opinion on this one. Charlie Strong is the prime candidate for our Head Coaching position. Charlie Strong has been a coach in some form or another with top BCS schools since 1986.

Charlie Strong wants an opportunity and I don't think it matters where. He feels left out of prior SEC coaching opportunities and I think he wants to make a statement.

The guy knows how to win. DC for 2 national title teams and may be 3 after this year. He understands how top 5 teams are built, knows how to recruit talent and will play the absolute best players no matter what.

Knows how to build a defense to stop the spread. Why? Because he practices against one of the best spread offenses in the nation everyday.

Knows how to recruit the south (SEC). Lets be honest, there are probably 5-6 Florida teams that are better than us. I think he could easily steal 4-5 recruits every cycle from the SEC. Maybe Meyer would push non-Florida commits to Strong just to keep them out of other SEC teams.

Still a young coach that would definitely bring fire and intensity. Ever watched a Florida game? Those guys can flat-out lay the wood and are always fired up.

He would be moderately cheap. Right now he is making $310K. We could probably land him for 5 years at $1 mil per year and make his contract very incentive heavy, ie: Big 12 north and Big 12 overall championships, Bowl game, BCS game, and National title.

Would stay here for 10+ years? Probably not. But the guy would make us competitive RIGHT NOW.

He feels that race has played a factor in his coaching opportunities and I feel Boulder would more than welcome him. His biggest struggle would be against the Admin of CU. But winning cures all and I think after 2-3 years, we would be in a BCS game.

The question is that who will also offer Charlie Strong their head coaching position after this season is over?

I floated his name in an earlier thread and think he is a great choice.

He comes from a nationally respected program, so he will have broad appeal. (Media, recruits, coaching staff…)

He has built one of the best defensive units in the nation.

I agree he has a great resume

I agree he gives us a strong recruiter in the southeast. (If he was open to hiring Bienamy we would have strong presence on both coasts.)

I know it is playing with fire, but I will bring up race. I hope no one is offended.

1. During the scandal of the Barnett era, we took an image hit in the minority communities. I believe that the scandal was used against CU to give the impression that Colorado is not particularly minority friendly. His hire would help further the repairing of that image.
2. Because there are so few minority head coaches, He might be able to draw some prominent staff that might not otherwise conceder a program that is down like ours. (I.e. Eric bienamy left CU to work with Karl Dorell.)
3. As a minority he has direct knowledge pertaining to the struggles minorities face in our society. I think that knowledge could have advantages when recruiting minority talent and their families.
4. I believe he would be the first D1 African American coach in Colorado history, and that excitement might generate a broader fan base.

All that being said, with a 3 million dollar to buy out, Hawkins might be here for a few more years. I don’t think Strong will be available by then.

I agree 100%. CU has carried the stigma of not carrying about minority athletes since around 1998. I believe a hire like this would, without a doubt, lay some of that anxiety to rest. I do not want another head coach from a lower-tier conference. I want someone that has been to the show and who over a course of time (5-6 years) actually built and maintained something. I believe his hiring would bring alot of positive publicity to Boulder, the university and the team.

This sounds great to me. The frustrating thing is that while we can all daydream about who would whip this program back into shape, we simply cannot afford to buy out another contract...I hate to be a downer, but we're stuck with Talkins for at least another year. Who knows if Charlie Strong will still be available after next season. On the bright side, who knows - maybe there will be some even better options available. At this point, we should just be concerned about trying not to lose too many more of our talented players to transfers and recruits to other schools.

maybe Pissbomber can afford to buyout Hawkins' contract.... and maybe Hawkins can work for Pissbomber the remainder of his contract.... maybe Hawk can Zen-out Pissbomber....

Should Bohn use Neinas again or go with another headhunter or let the boosters interview the candidates?

He should save the AD some ****ing money and just go after the right guy. It doesn't take a genius to make a solid list of candidates, this is NOT an exact science but jesus just do it himself. HIring through headhunters sure hasn't worked out thus far. My criterion: If the coach ever mentions "samurai" or "zen" he is immediately out.

I wonder what it would take to get Gary Patterson at TCU to come here. He's a proven coach and it would reopen the Texas pipeline. There is no question he knows defense and he's had some good running games and backs. I'm not sure he would fit in with the Boulder lifestyle and probably wouldn't come here as he probably could get an SEC gig or if he waits the Texas A&M gig. I'm sure it would also take $2 to $3 million per year but I bet he could turn it around pretty quickly.

Gary Patterson would be a great hire.. He's about the only guy from a non-BCS school that I would take..

Aggy is weird, I think they'll stick with Sherman for at least 3 more years. If I remember correctly they didn't exactly look at him the past two times they hired a new coach.

I wouldn't mind Charlie Strong..

I'm liking the Strong hire - we need serious work on D. BTW, first you post, then you double your posts in one thread. Don't overdo yourself! Nice first post!

Yep, agreed very much on Strong.

Didn't know a whole lot about him (other than his fill-in for Zooker), but his background and experience is very appealling.

I like that he has worked at alot of different programs and under multiple successful head-coaches, rather than a "one-coach" assistant.

God, this feels like the off-season all over again, with so much "wishful thinking".

Damnit let's kill the Cowpokes!

I am about 99% certain Gary Patterson will never be the head coach in College Station. He has little interest in that job and they probably have little interest in him after the Fran debacle.

I don't think that Strong being married to a white woman would play any better in Aggieland than it would with SEC boosters. If he wants a HC opportunity, as infuriating as his situation is, he probably needs to come north.

Hire him........ nao

Charlie Strong has been around a long time though really. Heard his name for quite a few years.

I say hire Pissbomber as Head Coach. He seems to be dialed in and in touch with the program more than Hawkins. Plus we won't need to pay him.

Now, can he find coaches that can actually coach.

I've heard the guys name a lot, but I had no idea he was black. I just thought he was a good coach that I heard a lot about. I don't think we hire him because of his race, but because he'll be a kick ass coach and get this damn ship moving again.

Charlie Strong's Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_Strong

He coached at Texas A&M as a grad assistant in 1985 and pretty much has been in the south for a long time. Sounds like Louisville didn't bother to contact him according to FootballCoachScoop.

I cannot see Strong going to Norte Dame just like Urban Meyer's isn't going to Norte Dame. If Strong gets a whiff about CU having a hard-on for academics like ND, Strong might not want to come here.

I'd love to have Strong...I'm just not sure how we would get him to come here.

He definitely looks the part. All the best coaches I ever had scared the **** out of me. He's got a "I'm gonna run your *** til you die look in that photo". I'd say he could get the job done...without the orange slices.:smile2:

Notice the haircut: it's the exact opposite of Juicebox's Janet Reno cut...another significant juxtaposition. Bohn! Get him on the phone and sign him now - think how many Florida commits would consider coming with him to CU...
