Why I'm not upset...

going into the year UT was a no-hoper IMO. So I'm not bent they got over on CU at home.

Bright spots. Sipili back in the LB rotation. West, Rippy, Bonsu and Kasa are all good players who should, assuming there is any player development, become very good defenders.

The OL held their own on pass protection and manged some decent running gains, just not a lot of consistency to the run game.

UT is overrated IMO. The inability to run the ball continues to haunt them.

QB change. Well, now we'll see if TH is better. It is hard to believe he'll be worse. The staff did what everybody knew needed to be done as far back as the KU game last year. Still throwing five yard outs form a backpeddle off you back foot? That one play sums up the last two and a half years of QB play. I was a frickin' OL/DL (and not even at D1 level) and even I have heard every frickin' coach I ever played for lecture the QB about setting his feet to get velocity on the ball. Absolutely mind-boggling.

If TH proves to be better, CU wasted half of last season and half of this season by failing to do the obvious and that will be on the staff.

If TH isn't any better, I'm asking myself why in year four the staff hasn't recruited/developed a better option. And again, I will blame the staff.

For the first time, I do feel like there is a glimmer of hope for the O. If you cannot stretch the field and back the safeties off with the occasisonal deep middle of the field completion, your O will get stuffed by a loaded box, WCO or not...JMO.

The only reason I am upset is, if we played that way (defense in particular) in every game this year as we did in the first half, we would have been CSU, at least held Toledo to under half-a-hundred and possibly held on vs WV. We show flashes of greatness, but each flash is followed by a few flashes of What The Hell Are We doing?

1 step forward, 2 (sometimes more) backwards

Siplili looked awesome too.

I honestly think if they KNEW how to play like that the first two games, they would have. Don't know why it took 5 games to make the adjustments, but let's hope they stick, and only keep getting better.

It's starting to look like Division 1, Big 12 football as it should.

So are you guys saying it's just about to "pop"?

That would be kewl.

Heck if I know. But I saw some moments in the Texas game that gave me reason to be optimistic. I don't kid myself: I know I am looking for the best moments that support my hopes for the buffs. But they were there.

I don't know. Fundamental change is necessary IMO. Getting the play makers on the field would be a good start. That would require upsetting the holy grail of player groupings though. I am excited to see if QB play can improve. The frustrating thing is there is talent on the roster. This team absolutely is better than CSU and Toledo. UT and WVU ehh, I don't know...

I think we are about to "pop."

On Hawkins pick 6, did anyone else notice Simas open on the corner route in the end zone? Nice route and necessary separation, should have been a TD to go in front.

I think Hansen's "roommate" from here is going to be Simas, he went for him on a fly pattern late. McKnight becomes the possession/slot receiver that he is built for.

Defensively, this game should be a huge confidence builder. Sipili looked horrific versus Toledo, but he looked all Big 12 Saturday. I like him in there except against 5 WRs. The offensive line was a liability for some reason, not many holes and way too many penalties. Speedy tripped in the open on what should have been a long run. Just missed out on some big plays, which is usually due to lack of confidence.

CU got to play with the lead which allowed them to be very conservative offensively. Once they got behind they fell apart on offense. Cody throws that same route to McKnight all the time, I wonder why it did not get jumped before this.

Texas offense was very strange - anyone else surprise they never went downfield with the pass. CU was able to crowd the LOS most of the game. If that is as good as the UT offense is then they will lose to OU.

The reason I am not upset.

I had a great time tailgating followed a great game of football against the number 2 team in the nation on the road.

Did I mention great tailgating.

I saw some huge positives.
(Mostly over WV and Texas)
+'s

-We have managed to get pressure consistantly which is something that we haven't been able to do in years.
-Jimmy Smith is soo under rated. He is a lock down corner with great run support.
-The O line managed to get some good pushes. But more importantly, I think they have been able to provide a good pocket. Lil Hawk has just had happy feet. (That and they have to keep him outside the pocket to see)
-Offensive play calling has been more aggressive as well. We have been willing to try the deep ball off of PA , and even just to open up the short passes.
-Linebacker play has been dramatically more intense. Last year the line backers were flat. Simply ineffective.
These were just some subtle differences I have been noticing.

:yeahthat:

The thing I have no upset feelings about is the Dline.

They were a huge concern of mine coming into the season. Right now, not so much.

Things I liked:
Pressure! We're creating pressure rushing 4. Remember, against CSU and Toledo we gave their QBs all day to throw, now they have to watch it.

I saw Kasa have a few plays where he pushed two blockers back with a bull rush. He's also fast as hell. He is going to be awesome.

I saw our young DL's getting in on the OL, mixing it up and playing with a nasty attitude.

I saw almost no change in Dline performance when different players were rotated in. This means we can rotate personnel frequently to keep the DL fresh for 4 qtrs. (haven't had that in several years)

I cannot think of another group on the team that has made such huge strides in their performance between game 1 and 5. The whole D has gotten better but the Dline has lead the way.

I saw some positives as well:

-I loved seeing Bonsu, West and Kasa in there getting meaningful reps. Those 3 are going to be good in a year or two.

-Sipili looks to be back from wherever the hell it is he went the past year or so. He was flying around, playing well.

-DBs looked pretty good against a passing team like that. Jimmy can flat out play. I love seeing Jimmy and Jalil in press coverage. I also love that this team finally has corners that have the ability to play press coverage against good WRs. Slow my ass. The DBs have plenty of speed, especially when Perkins/Polk and Burney are in at safety.

Anyone know where Major was on Saturday? Didn't see him in there much, if at all. Also, any news on Rippy?

Chilly - did you make it to the Austin Buff Club "rogue" tailgate? If so, thanks for coming and glad you had a great time!

Going deep...
