How will the offense be modified for Hansen?

As much as I believe that Cody was not a big 12 caliber QB, I am not happy with the way the QB situation has been handled by this coaching staff. Near as I can tell Hansen has thought he would be redshirted since three weeks before the CSU game so he has not been groomed to take over. Even during the past week he was still trying to decide. I wonder how many snaps he has been taking in practice.

So now that we are coming up on the midway point of the season we are throwing a new QB onto the field. I expect CU to struggle on offense for a few games until Hansen gets up to speed - even OU's offensive production has been down when the backup came in even though he is a talented player.

Does CU have to simplify offense? I hope at a minimum they put in some deep patterns with Simmons to stretch the defense which hopefully will set up the running game. CU's big challenge is going to be scoring enough points to win, last year and this year we see the old 14 to 17 points a game against Big 12 caliber opponents.

I wonder how long a leash that Hansen will get from the coaching staff. They still have to win games and I wonder how much patience they will have if Hansen struggles.

He will struggle, that will be for sure...but with TH under center I think we have more of a ball controlled offense. With his ability to leave the pocket, and his quick release on the ball we should be able to move the ball for more scoring chances.....GO BUFFS!!!!

expect to see more corner posts and outs, and yes, short crossing patterns. woot. At least, they goddamn well should put those in.

Good question.

I don't think anyone is happy with the QB situation, but I'm sure they are happy a change has been made. I know I am. There was a minute there that I thought Hawkins was going to let Cody start the whole season, which would've been a disaster.

Nobody in their right mind thinks Hansen is going to be the savior for the Buffs, but letting Cody finish the season for the sake of a RS would've been the worst decision of Hawks career.

...if it were me, I would've saved Hansen's redshirt, because this season is ****ed in my opinion. Hansen I guess does need time under center in order to stop tucking the ball away so soon. I was at the game, and from my view, which wasn't great, it seemed like he had reverted to last year's form - feel the pressure much too early and stop looking for receiver, instead just scamper around looking to make a play.

I think the offense will get simpler. There won't be four options to check, but more often, two places where the ball is supposed to go. I think Simas will get thrown to more, because I think Cody favored throwing to McKnight. We may get more creative with running plays.

One last thing, Hansen isn't too much taller than Cody, so I don't think the entire "taller" qb wish of so many fans gets fulfilled here.

More QB draws (duh)
I think they will try to simplify the passing game for him. Things like cutting the field in half for him (putting the targeted routs are on the same side of the field) to make it easier to progress through the checks. Outs and sideline patterns so if his accuracy is a little off there's less chance of a pick. I also think they will put in a lot of short easy passes (short outs and screens) in the beginning to build his confidence.

Since our pass protection hasn't been great they need to focus on getting the ball out of his hands quickly. TH needs some quick and easy success to build on early and then they can start to challenge him with more difficult routes & schemes.

Whatever happens, this season become a lot more interesting with the switch. It should also give Hansen more experience for the next. Our line play needs to improve regardless.

I'm ecstatic to see what TH can do. I know there will be some growing pains, but his ceiling is so much higher than Cody's, I'm really looking forward to seeing him grow into the role.

I loved seeing passes with some zip on them. Now the OL just has to give him some time to throw.

I don't think a QB has to always be taller -Reesing and Daniels are not tall but they were effective. Reesing does a good job using his mobility to move around to find a passing lane. I agree that Hansen looks out of control when he starts to scramble, but Saturday he was facing an all out blitz on every play.

hansen does seem to have a better arm so presumably he'll make some throws that ch couldn't make (or usually even try). i think that would mean they'll throw more across the middle, as well as more mid- to long- range routes. and, i would think the bread and butter little outs that they love so much will look better when the ball is getting to the spot more quickly than a wounded duck. most importantly, it seemed to me that they usually wanted cody to throw to just one half of the field. i think this was due to arm strength issues. maybe they'll let hansen drop straight back and throw to zones on both sides? the reason the te's kept getting open downfield for ch was that it was so out of character. i would think they won't run those plays so much and will try to spread the ball more to the wrs.

finally, his mobility is a blessing if he doesn't over-do it. they should utilize that. something similar to what the broncs did v. the pats could be deadly with a qb who is a run threat.

at least this will give us some tiny bit of hope.

PissBomber was mentioning something about the wishbone formation back when he thought TH would get some PT early. I would love to see that! Plus, any option would be good. Hell, how about a wild buffaloes formation? TH gives a smart OC a LOT of options. Hell, he throws a better ball and is more athletic then Tate Forcier, thats for sure. Just hope hes found 1/10 of the moxy that kid has.

Got to have run/pass option plays and we have to start utilizing screens more IMO. Screens to RBs and WRs need to be a major part of the offense. I would also say we need to be operating out of the shotgun at least 50% of the time for both pass protection purposes and it should allow TH to see the field a bit better to progress through his reads.

I worry about relying on short crossing routes with this WR group because those routes require precise route-running, not exactly a strength of this unit.

oh god, 50% shotgun? Abandoning that downhill running game? Does this offense really need to completely change how it approaches a game that drastically?

I beg to differ sir, mcknight, espinosa are great route runners. :smile2: Simas is too.
I'd like to see more screens also but can our OL handle it well enough to get positive yds? Hansen has more zip and hopefully, we'll see some depper throws and plays downfield. We can't keep throwing it for 5 yds a pop. Some running'pass option plays sound real good. What happened to running behind a FB in this power running game

I'd like to see more shotgun in obvious passing sitatuons. Kiseau seems to have picked up where Helfrich left off with the play action pass on 3rd and 23. Memo coaches: Nobody bites on the run fake on 3rd and long, don't even waste your time. I would also like to see more screens, both WR and RB. Especially some WR screens to Lockridge. I'd like to see Hansen try to throw some deep outs, just because I want to see one for the first time in years.

 That gets really old. All it does is allow the pass rushers that extra time to get to the quarterback, and will not create any separation between the WR and DB.

I don't think the O will be simplified. Honestly, all we run now are 3 yard curls.

I look to actually see things open up more. Throws downfield. I also think it would be a great time to introduce the wildcat. We could never do it with Cody being so slow.

Great time to get Speedy and DS on the field at the same time.

They better damn well leave him in no matter what. I have doubts he is going to make that much difference in winning games, but the change had to be made. Tyler at least has a skill set the gives CU a chance to be good. I don't see how Hawkins can ask this kid to give up two redshirt years half way through both and then yank him like he did last year. Cody's career should be over barring injury. It's time to move on with our other QBs and see what we have. If for some reason TH just can't get it done I'd be in favor of one of the freshman playing before letting Cody go back in. But that is a worst case scenario. Let him finish the year and see how he does.

This is why there aren't any good plays for 3rd and 23, or rather, the percentages go way down. You have to stay out of those situations.

Just playing devil's advocate here :)devil:), but had they not yanked Hansen in favor of Cody against ISU we probably would have lost game. I don't see why there should be some stipulation that he, or anyone for that matter, is the starter regardless of performance.

Agree on the ISU game last year, but we're also talking about a true freshman playing behind a makeshift line - not surprising he struggles.

I don't think you give Tyler an unlimited leash, but if the plan is to get him some real game experience when the games still matter, then you have to let him battle through bad games and not be quick to yank him, otherwise we're right back where we were a year ago.

Cody got a looong look despite his struggles, Tyler deserves a looong look too considering he gave up his redshirt 2 years in a row.

If that is the case they should have bench CH against CSU, Toledo, WY, or WVU. He was bad in all of those games.

Being 1-4 and taking the RS from TH means that he needs to play for the rest of the season. Everyone knows what we have with CH. It's time to see if TH can bring anything to the offense for next year. The only way to do that is playing in games.

If 5-6 games from now there is no difference between CH and TH next year is gonna really blow. We better start looking for JC QB or hope one of the true freshmen can ball.

god ****ing dammit you ****ing noobs this has already been discussed to death. Talk about the offense, not how long TH deserves to be in. (tahts right stampy, I rolled you in with the noobs  :wink2: )

Noob!?! Don't roll me in with those whippersnappers. I'm old enough (in allbuff years) to be your vfather!

I just imagined an exciting offense that was fun to watch...Wow, can you imagine what that would be like? We can all dream.

Every now and then ESPN Classic or FoxSports will show an old CU game from way back in the day, (early 90's). :smile2:

I hope that we open up the play calling. Lets try and get the ball down field by more than 3-4 yards a play. I think it is a great time to get some QB draws, and other designed QB runs into the O. We have to come up with something that makes the LB's on the other team think about something other than bum rush the backfield every play.

During one of the games this weekend they said something to this effect:

Chances of scoring on an 80 yard drive ~20%
If you get one play of 20 or more yards, that goes up to 50%
If you get two plays of 20 or more yards that goes up to 80%

If you want to change the offense, that's what they should focus on.

I think you have to give Hansen at least 4-5 full games, if not the rest of the season. This season is shot anyway, and the Buffs need to know what they have at the QB position. Time to sink or swim, Tyler.

If TH doesn't get it done with extensive playing time, then the coaches will have a much better handle on what he can and cannot do in a game, and plan for the future accordingly. If he performs really poorly, then I'd say they need to get Lobato or Evans some PT. I love Cody as a Buff who has given his all to this program, but I do not want to see him take another snap. It's time to move forward, not back.

Forget Lobato or anyone else. By the way what happened to the hype on Evans?

I fully expect to see Cody back as the starter if Hansen fails to get the team moving.
