Would we have beaten csu and toledo with Hansen in?

Joel Klatt sure seems to think so. He ripped Hawkins pretty good for not having Hansen in to begin the season. Me thinks Joel does not like Hawkins. He also picks kstate to win, BTW.

But I digress. Did we lose those games because of QB play or a pourous defense. My feeling was that it was because the defense gave up huge play after huge play, but maybe I'm wrong. According to Klatt, we would be 4-2 with Hansen at QB. I kind of take that as JK taking a shot at Hawkins more than anything else and not being very objective as to why we lost those games.

I think yes, we would have beaten CSU, but not Toledo... although a win against CSU might have changed the whole tone of the Toledo game.

That could be. But how many long throws did the D give up against the Rams?

our defense was so terrible in those games it wouldnt have mattered.

Impossible to say for sure, but I think it would have helped. Not only would the offense have been better, but the defense would have had to work against a better offense, and might have picked up on the speed of the game quicker.

All pure speculation, though. Not really healthy to play the "what if" game at this stage.

it wasn't just hansen, of course.

did you see woelk's column before the ku game last week? he said that hawkins needs to loosen the reigns and let his assistants make decisions.

being that woelk is very close to the program, this tells me that hawkins was (or maybe still is) overruling decisions by the assistants.

this would include, obviously, deciding which players are on the field.

have you noticed that in addition to the qb change, we've also seen different guys see the field on defense? and, not coincidentally, all the new guys who seem to be seeing more time all appear to be more athletic than the guys they are taking time from?

i think the hansen thing is a symptom of a larger problem that maybe, just maybe, is being addressed now.

woelk, i think, was gently trying to lean on hawk to loosen the reigns. maybe he got the message?

Against CSU we might have had a chance. Toledo...I doubt it. Remember that Simas and Simmons weren't on the field along with our other more athletic WRs. The safety play during that time was atrocious. The DL wasn't getting a push and the LBs weren't making tackles either. Everything on D was an unmitigated disaster. Kiseau was calling his first game so that didn't help the O too. We had no Kasa and guys like West were seeing their first game...granted it's at Folsom, but the first college game of your life against a rival whose OL is the most experienced in the country set us up for a long day...and that continued on Friday.

We later made Burney go to Safety and Manke hasn't played much since the earlier part of the season, I think, due to injury. The combo of poor saftey play, CB blitzing, poor tackling, poor DL play and bad play calling on D cost us those games. Hansen might have given us a chance, but only a chance. No guaranteed victory.

I blame the coaches for not getting the team ready, especially the D. Our CBs are better than that style of play. The coaches have had time to recruit DL and there's no reason to try and out-scheme CSU or Toledo. We are bigger, stronger and overall more athletic. Line up and out "athlete" them. UT, for instance, kept their D pretty vanilla until OU....when they couldn't do that anymore since OU has the horses.

I like Neil, but I don't give him that much credit.

I think it is difficult to look at these kind of scenarios in a vacuum. With a better QB on the field moving the ball consistently, the defense gets more rest and probably plays with more confidence if they know that the offense can score for them. The play of your QB can change the entire character of your team much more than any other position on the field.

Basically what I am saying is that

1) The offense plays significantly better with Hansen at the helm
2) The defense looks better as a result of being on the field less, feeling less pressure, and basically being asked to do less.

I think we definitely win the CSU game with Hansen at QB and have a better than 50% to win the Toledo game. I also think that the WV game would probably play out differently.

If your offense is completely incompetent and you are not the 2000 Baltimore Ravens, your whole team is going to look bad. When defenses feel like they have to do everything, they press more and may not look as good as they would if their offense was moving the ball.

IMHO games are won and lost on the lines. CSU won that game in the trenches on both sides of the ball that night. I really don't believe it would have mattered who was under center for the Buffs.

I think we would be at 4-2 or 5-1 with the wins coming against csu and wvu

toledo would be a toss up with hansen (I think we might have matched them score for score)

My first response to this thread is the same as my response to all of the threads that state we would not have won against KU with Cody at QB...

1. We'll never know, and
2. Who cares?

Maybe I'm just optimistic enough about the future of the team that I'd rather not play the woulda, shoulda, coulda game. I am also not looking for a reason to be upset at Hawkins the greater or the lesser. I just want to see us improve week to week and justify the promise that all of us hoped for in this team during the offseason.

you bring up a great point re: WVU

that game was for the taking and the offense did nada FOUR different
times after the defense recovered turnovers- got to think if Hansen
had been in there things would have been different

No - CU would have lost last week w/Cody under center.... that's very obvious

I don't think TH would have made a difference the first two. But I really do think he may have made the difference against WVU. But also remember, TH was only, what, 14 of 25 for 175 against KU. He'll need to do better than that. Also, it would not hurt if the receivers helped him out from time to time by catching the damned ball. Mangino did say that TH was the difference in the game.

What if's don't matter.

What if Hansen started the season? Betcha Mangino's team might have benefited from the extra game tape and made adjustments that might have changed the outcome.

What if Hansen has problems coordinating the snap against Wyoming? He wasn't at all in synch with the OL in Austin, and has some more cleaning up.

What if my aunt had balls? She'd be my uncle.

But hey, if it makes you feel better to believe Hansen was the difference in CU's losses, then knock yourself out.

What if Mangino ate the game ball? Would Th still be able to pass it?

The reason I asked is because Klatt pissed me off by saying we would be 4-2 if Hansen had started the season at QB. Looks like most of you disagree with him. :smile2:

If we had landed Landry Jones he be the starter and we'd be undefeated. Would crank out the next 4 Big XII titles and 3 MNCs. And Klatt would have to complain about the Colorado being too small on our uniforms.

Well, I would say 3 - 3, and UT and WVU might have gone different.... but who the **** knows. I'm happy as long we win going forward!

If CU were undefeated under Jones, I'd be sporting a nifty 'stache.
