Coaching Carousel...

I expect Brian Kelly to be the next coach at ND. He hasn't been denying interest in ND. I think I read that Jim Rome asked him if he was sure he would be the coach at Cincy next year and he said, "Umm, no."

So, if/when Kelly takes the Irish job, who are the top candidates to replace him? I have no knowledge of any of the assistants at Cincy. Would they look at Skip Holtz or stick with a midwestern guy?

They basically recruit Ohio and Michigan as their bread and butter, I wonder if they tap the Central Michigan-Grand Valley pipeline again and look at Butch Jones or Chuck Martin.

Yes. Hell of a pipeline. If I'm the Cincy AD, I need to get Jones before he potentially gets called upon by a more attractive BCS program (Michigan, Illinois... us?) in 2010. And despite its relative youth as a program and potential facility and recruiting potential shortcomings relative to BCS schools that have been at it much longer, the team has to be returning enough people to make it a no-brainer for any coach to think he can come in and continue to win in the Big East.

Jones looks like the smart, home run hire here. I know we had a guy like that a few years back and it hasn't lived up, but you have to take the chance.

Louisville has called a 4 pm ET press conference to announce the hiring of Florida defensive coordinator Charlie Strong.

Reports it may be Edsall instead of Kelly at Notre Dame.

Also that it's looking like Gill or Holtz for Kansas.

I'm surprised ND isn't going after Patterson. I think he's just what they need. Not so sure Kelly will bring much more than Weis did, except maybe a little more of a defensive background. It's not like Cincy is known for it's great defense this year.

EDIT: wow Edsall? I think he's a good coach, but that's a pretty under the radar move for ND.

Heard on the radio last night Joe Schad said their were 4 finalists for KU Job:
Skip Holtz
Turner Gil
Butch Jones
Tim Brewster

Brewster is the interesting one since he is already in a BCS conference and Minnesota just built the new stadium, etc.

Also, ESPN is now saying there still might be some mutual interest between Edsall and KU

Brewster has already denied the interest on his part and says he is working on an extension with Minnesota (coincidence?).

Holtz and Gill should also be on Cincy or UConn's radar for whichever school loses their coach to ND. UConn might fill internally with Hank Hughes (A.H.C.-Def) as well.

So the Kelly to ND rumors turn out to be true...it's a good fit, BK is a good coach and even looks a little bit like a leprechaun....

J.D. Brookhart out at Akron.

IMO Charlie Strong will do well at Louisville.

Tuberville announces no interest in the Gayhawks. Butch Jones of CMU apparently does have interest.

I should hope Butch Jones has interest in KU. He's even been talking to Marshall despite the fact they've got no money. He seems to want out of Central Michigan in a bad way. I think he sees the writing on the wall and knows he will never have a better 2-year run at CMU than he had the past 2 years. Better get out while the gettin's good.

Yeah Akron picked up a steal with Rob Ianello.

All the musical chairs could leave Cincy with limited options.

They seem very conservative with salaries and commitments, since they didn't even try to keep Kelly there by upgrading facilites as they "promised" him they would.

Tuberville or Fulmer would have to reduce their "market value" to go there, but they would probably be just fine with bringing in another "up and comer" type coach. Got to think Turner Gill would have some natural fits with knowing the recruiting area, but they probably have someone in mind already.

Might even be a possibility that the new Head Leprechaun can pay him more than enough to be OC and recruiting coordinator at ND. Now that Iannello is gone. Jones might want to hold out for a HC job, but if he waits til next year his stock could fall (ala Turner Gill).

Keep in mind they've only been in the Big East for 5 years now and play in one of the smallest (if not the smallest) stadiums among BCS schools.

Oh no question that is the case, but other programs that are in similar situations have been agressive with coaches in order to "build up" their program. Cincy seems to be taking a methodical, build it organically, type approach.

It seems Harbaugh to Kansas is picking up steam.. . :sad2:

Hoping this is just Harbaugh trying to get more money out of Stanford.

It's picking up a lot of steam. I'm starting to think they are in negotiations.

That's still the definition of lateral move, though. In fact, that's more of a step backwards for Harbaugh. I can't believe he doesn't want to just get 8 wins next year with Luck and hope that Rich Rod blows it again and then bam, he has his dream job.

It has to be a money move, as Stanford will always have more of a fighting chance at winning their conference than Kansas does theirs. Unless you bank on the division format in the Big 12, in which it should be easier to go to the title game if you're Kansas v. the North, then hope you make a strong showing like last weekend and pull off a win. I think Harbaugh's just trying to inch closer to the middle of the country and get reallllll familiar with Michigan recruiting territory.

Today Harbaugh is saying he will stay at Stanford.

According to the always reliable footballcoachscoop,

According to our sources, Athletic Director Lew Perkins has turned his focus to Butch Jones (Central Michigan Head Coach), Turner Gill (Buffalo Head Coach) Kevin Sumlin (Houston Head Coach) and Skip Holtz (East Carolina Head Coach) after being turned down by several coaches.
