CU at OU

Just booked my trip to OKC for the game. With Hawk at the helm I don't give us much of a chance, but it's our last time (at least for the foreseeable future) of playing at OU.

Anyone else going? We need a tailgate!

SW is running a deal for the next 48 hrs or so. I bought RT tickets from ABQ for $150.

rep for the SW info! OUBuff now has a deadline to decide whether to go to OU/CU or to the GA home game.

Norman sucks. lol

That said... I could be convinced if a large enough group went. It sucks being there alone in enemy gear.

I'd love to go. How much does Norman suck?

Norman doesn't suck very much at all. Of all the venues in the B12, it's only one step below Boulder, IMO. Good bars, easy parking, cheap eats. It's not anything overly special, but it doesn't suck balls, like Manahattan or Ames.

Have to see how $$$ works out around that time. I have no issue making the 6 hour drive up from Austin, it's the $85/seat in the endzone that's an issue.

My brother lives in Oklahoma so it'll be nice to visit him and see my niece.

While I won't miss the Big 12 CFB lives in places like Norman. I'd expect it to be a great place to see a game. After the game though, well, I'll probably never go back.

Been there, done that, got flipped off by enough old ladies to last one lifetime.
Don't need to go back.
**** Norman.

Did you kick their canes and tip over their wheelchairs after they flipped you off? That's the way CU fans roll. Everybody knows that.

Same here. I've had my fill of Norman, OU, and Sooner fans.

I recommend booking a room at the Hampton Inn and Suites in Bricktown, just south of downtown OKC.
Bricktown is a vibrant entertainment district around a river walk. The number, proximity and quality of bars and restaurants far exceed anything you'll find in Norman. Bricktown is only 20 miles from the OU campus, which is within easy striking distance.

I would definitely suggest staying in OKC over Norman. Much less easier to deal with both before, after and getting around.

The obvious advantage to staying in Norman is the post-game tailgates can be more festive.

Sacky - You must have had a great time at an OU home game at some point. Your promotion of Norman tailgates sounds like it might be on par with my affection for game day in Lubbock.

I've been to Norman 3 times, including a CU win, and haven't been enchanted with the experience. I rank the Norman gameday experience below KU, OSU, TT and UT due to factors like quality of tailgate, friendliness of fans, existance of amazing sports bar and hotel, and the attractiveness of the town itself. OU doesn't stand out in any of those categories. My memories of Norman involve hanging out under a canopy in on the lawn drinking beer while some average cover band is playing on a flatbed trailor. A dozen different Sooners make lame remarks about dining on buffalo burgers before changing the subject to UT. Then I go to the stadium and sit 30 yards behind the back of the endzone and hear boomer sooner repeated a million times until my head throbs. I get back to the car and turn my Ralphie magnets right-side up, spend the next 45 minutes in gridlock trying to get back to the hotel. Then I walk across the strip mall parking lot and consume margaritas at some chain Mexican restaurant near I35.

Please sell me on Norman. Where do you stay? What bars are fun (anything rivaling OSU-Eskamo Joes or A&M- Dixie Chicken)? I have had some great nights on the town in OKC in Bricktown (Micky Mantel's Steak House, any number of bars on the river walk. But I have yet to find any Sooner magic in Norman.

The OU campus and Gaylord stadium is a little like A&M, but not as pretty. The Sooner fans are not that differnent than those in Nebraska, full of boisterous pride.

but better than Baylor and K-State.

Finally, some sane talk on Norman.

It's just an overgrown, bloated suburb of blight with a campus full of mis-matched buildings on it.

Skiddy - when did you last go to a game at OU?

The picture you paint of Norman is pretty accurate in some respects. Campus Corner, which is located on the North side of OU's campus, has really grown a lot in the past few years and now boasts some pretty nice bars, restaurants, etc. Gameday itself is not bad - there is no "Eskimo Joes" in Norman, other than the aforementioned Campus Corner area. Most of the tailgating takes places SOUTH of the football stadium, and there are some pretty good setups. Lots of satellite dishes, flatscreen televisions, and fancy trailers with grills these days.

The biggest problem with OU football games has always been the traffic going into the stadium and leaving the stadium. If you get to the campus EARLY and spend time on campus corner and so forth - you will be fine for getting to the game. Leaving is just a hassle. Again, walk over to Campus Corner and walk around for a while before you leave to let the traffic die down.

Hotels -- meh. Norman has recently had a very large, very nice Embassy Suites constructed on the North side of the City. It is quite a way from the campus but it is nice. Otherwise most of the local motels are chains.. La Quinta, that sort of thing. I think for nighttime environment, you will find Bricktown much more enjoyable. I would recommend you try to get hotel / parking at the hotel. Parking in Bricktown is a nightmare. If you stay in a Bricktown hotel (there are a couple right on the river, itself) then your parking is much much easier. There are lot of good restaurants in Bricktown.

Norman has undergone some decent growth and changes since 2006, when CU last played in Norman. It does still have its infrastructure limitations on traffic to and from the stadium, though.

Norman is in Oklahoma. Therefore, it sucks balls. End of discussion.

I'm sorry for those of you who are forced to live there.

@Slade - I was in Norman for the CU games in 2006, 2002 and 1998.

When I drive between Denver and Dallas, I make a point to spend the night in OKC just because of Bricktown's amineties. Bricktown is a patch of civizilation in an otherwise horrible trip across the prairie. Bricktown is a great place to unwind and let loose after being cooped up in a car all day.

Have you ever been to Cheyenne Wells or Lamar? Limon? I could probably add every bit of Colorado that is more than 35 miles EAST of I-25.

Every state has its hellholes.

OK, I admit that the one and only time I was ever in Norman for a football game was in 1989. the "Things have changed" game. It was such an incredible experience that anything that I came away with from that trip was viewed as a positive. I remember the campus being reasonably nice, and a big Irish Bar across the street from the stadium. I remember going to a bar after the game where they had $.50 drafts, and a group of 10 of us ran up a $80 bill (there was some food and a tip involved, but the vast majority of that was beer - we were trashed). I remember the fans being decent to us and the stadium was impressive.

It's been 21 years, Sacky? And you remember a beer tab? Wow! Did you get laid?

Atleast the Irish bar is still around.

Never been to a football game there, but went to a baseball game this spring. Campus is beautiful, and if you like Greek food - check out Greek House on Jenkins Ave. Good food, and cheap prices. There's lots worse college towns than Norman, it's no dump by a long shot.

I might consider going to Norman especially if a tailgate gets organized. I can catch I-40 in Statesville about an hour away and then it's all I-40 directly into OKC.
