Buffs extend Kiesau for two more seasons

CU Buffs OC Eric Kiesau was locked up for three seasons recently (2009, 2010, and 2011). Kiesau's name also has been brought up frequently as a short term replacement for Dan Hawkins if Hawkins was to be fired as the CU coach at one point this upcoming season. Normally coaches are not removed from their coaching duties until the end of the season when they have been fired. With Kiesau under contract for two more seasons, CU is now prepared for everything relating to Hawkins.

CU has a bye week after the Hawaii game. If CU goes 0-3, expect a coaching change to be made during that bye week. Mike Bohn gave Hawkins the dreaded vote of confidence a couple of weeks ago at a Colorado coaches luncheon. Now with Kiesau being signed through the 2011 season, I believe this puts Hawkins on notice that he cannot afford another bad start to the season.

I hope Hawkins is ready to coach up the boys and kick some Ram rears...he has been put on notice indirectly (I believe).

OK, I'm confused. I thought a state institution could only enter into one year contracts with employees other than the few exceptions given for the head BB coaches and FB coach. What gives?

CU gets 5 long term contracts by state law but we get to choose how we divy them up.

as i posted in the RRS bot thread, weird.

any potential incoming coach has to deal with a fan fave Cabral, Hagan, and contract Kiesau as an incoming situation?

if it's me, i clean house completely without nostalgia but we are gonna pay Kiesau no matter what. nifty.

who knows? Helfrich looked pretty good calling the plays for UO last year. looked like unwiped ass on whole wheat toast for us.

I think the new coach should be given the option of picking whatever coaches he wants. If he wants to keep Cabral, Hagan, Kiesau, etc - that's fine with me. If he wants to fire them all, fire all the GA's, fire the strength and conditioning coach, fire the cook, etc., that's fine with me, too.

Absolutely. Although I am prepared to see Hagan gone regardless. I think he has had plenty of chances and the results have been very mixed.

that's what i'm saying. and it happens at 95% of the schools during a coaching change. i think as a fan base, we have a little out of whack expectations about retaining Cabral and Hagan as Mac hold-overs.

Perchance Kiesau is the pick for CU's next HC?

While i'm not in favor (see reason partially articulated above), Woelk or Woody seemed to float the idea.

I'm against it. we need to cut bait.

Just seems odd to extend someone in such a situation unless there's a plan... Somethin's up.

In the meantime and on an unrelated note at the wc half: vale la furia roja!!!!!

what a ****ing joke. Exactly why am I supposed to be impressed with Kiesau again? IF this guy is our next head coach that is nuts. What has he done to deserve an extension?

The whole thing makes no sense at all. Makes about as much as when they gave Talkins his extension. What exactly has this guy done to merit this?

Does anyone actually read the article before they comment?

A) The article outright says that CU gets 6 long term contracts and this is one of them.

B) Bohn himself is quoted in the article as saying that this was agreed to a year and a half ago. What do you expect Bohn to do? Should he back out of a commitment he made to a coach a year and a half ago because the last year sucked. It's this commitment that kept Kiesau from going to Oregon instead of Helfrich. If Bohn reneged on this commitment, you'd never see anyone worth anything take another job for him.

C) So what, he's on contract for one more year after this one. If Hawkins is ****canned, it's only one year to buy out if the new coach doesn't want to keep him. If the new coach does keep him, and I'd imagine the majority of coaches would love to have Kiesau on staff, even better, we get to keep him one more year. Kiesau is a great coach and a great recruiter, it's unfortunate that people can't see past Hawkins handcuffing him, he showed what he can do as an OC against Nebraska when he's left alone and allowed to run an offense.

I tend to agree with SD. Bad start to the season, Kiesau gets the interim nod and the vote of confidence to turn it into his team and to show us all what he can do. If - IF - the team responds, make him the head coach.

So let's define "bad start".

By all accounts, we should lose to both UGA and Cal. So does a bad start mean losing to either CSU or Hawaii? Is 2-2 good enough for Hawk to not get fired, but 1-3 isn't?

I tend to agree that there is something to be read between the lines on this deal, but I'm not exactly sure what it is. My first thought was that Bohn wants to make sure that Kiseau sticks around after Hawkins is fired. But the thought that Bohn might actually be thinking of keeping Kiseau as HC makes warped sense. Kiseau is a West Coast guy. He has connections out there, and will be a head coach someday. Having met the guy, I can tell you he's a bright, energetic, and competent coach.

Too bad they didn't hand one of these contracts to coach Brown.

agree. You know, when Hawk first came, I was all on board, particularly due to his assistants. The only mistake I thought he made was not retaining Hankwitz, which I was right on I guess. Still, I liked Grimes, Helfrich, Cabral, Hagan, Kiesau and Brown. I thought Brown was an absolute gift from the football gods.

The new head coach has the right to get rid of everyone, and that's fine. However, I have no idea why you would get rid of Cabral. This isn't me wanting a holdover from the Mac days. This is objectively looking at his resume and realizing that he's a great coach. If I'm Cabral though, I voluntarily leave and gain experience elsewhere to become a head coach.

This sucks, because I do think Kiesau is a good coach, but I think he got promoted too quickly. I do not think we should make him a HC just based on potential. You can't groom and develop a head coach - they need to be ready to the job from day one.

I really don't think there is anything to "read between the lines" here. I think Hawkins asked Bohn to give Kiesau a contract, and Bohn made it happen. Nothing more, nothing less. At least imo.

The only thing to read between the lines is that Bohn made a commitment a year and a half ago. Bohn doesn't want to become blacklisted by potential hires by reneging on a commitment made to one of his coaches. It's hard enough to keep coaches with one year max contracts. It's that much harder if it becomes known that Bohn promised a long term deal and then yanked it. Bohn, already on thin ice, wouldn't be taken seriously by a coach in the nation if he pulled that ****.

So let's define "bad start".

Unfortunately, I think 2-2 Hawk keeps his job.

I have no real insight but, anticipating the potential of something less than that Bohn surely knows he's got to have his ducks - so to speak - in a row. 1-3 and the rage would be off the charts. For that matter, 0-1 and the ***t would hit the proverbial fan.

I don't think there is anything to read between the lines. When I read the headline I was confused and pissed off. However, once i read the article it appeared to me that Bohn was just honoring his previous commitment to Kiesau.

The article then says that the contract does not state he must be offensive coordinator, so a new coach could move him around wherever. Furthermore, he will be making $218,000 per year for three years (which includes last year). So that is only two more years at $218,000. If a new coach wants him out I don't think they will care much if they have to buy him out.

If he is head coach in waiting I am not happy. If last year showed anything he wasn't even ready to be offensive coordinator.

IMO, MB is honoring a commitment he had made before Hawk and Co. shat themselves in the '09 season. Given the restrictions on contracts, I hardly see how he could do anything else and maintain his credibility as an AD. That also explains, IMO, why GB was so hesitant to move on his ACs. It is an impediment, the one year contract deal. I'd be shocked if EK was being considerded for HC. But then again, I am dumbfounded Hawk is still here....

lefty,

EK was among the finalists for the Portland State job (his alma mater). He's well thought of in coaching circles, apparently, so it's likely that he'll be a hot commodity after this season if the Buffs show significant improvement on offense.

I wasn't being critical of EK. He has a strong pedigree. He was a good position coach at Cal. It's hard to see what he can do here. IMO he's been hamstrung to a certain extent. No need to rehash why, but I do remember the PSU deal. I really don't have a problem extending him. I would be interested in seeing what he can do running the O completely on his own. I stillhave a hard time seeing him as HC, at least at CU. He may have the chops for it, but it sems like a stretch at this point in his career. But then again, I don't make those decisions....so who knows.

I missed the "head coach at CU" thing. He's not ready for that, imo.

To me, the most significant aspect of this is that Bohn has received buy in from the regents to use one of the 6 extended contracts for the football program, giving them two instead of one. This will be a big deal when seeking interest for a new coach, if and when it comes to that.

I can't seem to remember, when Kiesau got one of CU's coveted long-term contracts, who had to give it up?

2-2 record to start 2010 and Juicebox coaches some Big 12 games- no doubt in my mind

go 1-3 and it gets interesting- a csu loss with only a Hawaii win and it's going to get U G L Y
