Some of these reasons were actually legit. But the LBs at #5? The depth? There are several spots on this team with serious depth issues. The last one is my favorite though. One of the primary reasons we have gone 16-33 is because of bad breaks? Really?

I thought coming out flat against KSU last year was a bad break, but that only accounts for one of the losses.

Definitely some sunshine pumping in that article. Mostly good points and some that didn't resonate with me. I think that's ok, though, BB. This is the last Sunday sports section before fall camp starts. This was a local beat writer doing his job. In some parts of the country, the fan base would have thought the article was too negative.

"tough breaks". muhfugger please. why not just call losing some "unlucky hocus pocus".

Woelk's stuff in the Hawkins era so often reads like undergrad papers where the author is clearly trying to write what they think you (instructor) want to hear....and think they are getting away with it.

but, shout out to Ryan Miller. he's often out running by himself in the evenings on the practice fields. have to admire the kid. he wants to succeed. If Miller and Solder can move the line, we've got a shot to be much improved on O with some legit targets at WR. hope, hope.

We never see a departure from this in most of his columns. The time of year is inconsequential.

And really the only one that bothers me is the last one. I think far too many people within the program actually believe that and that is sad.

I don't buy the "tough breaks" thing either. That's the one that really didn't resonate with me. It's a cop out to suggest that bad luck has anything to do with losing a lot of football games.

you can't play the "tough breaks"/bad luck card *at the same time* as the "every other program has attrition of top recruits, injury, bad behavior, problems with the local law, loses scholarships..." etc.

you can't normalize the latter and expect the former (losing) to be a credible product of "exceptional circumstances".

Teams have had "tough breaks" cost them individual games and even sometimes turn a season sour. That said when something happens four years in a row, a coach is 16-33, you have gotten blown out by CSU and Toledo (Toledo?) and lost to Montana State, you have never had a season winning more than two games on the road, etc. etc. you cannot use the "tough breaks" excuse, the "bad luck" excuse, the "cupboard was bare" excuse, or any other excuse. This stuff happens to every team in the county, the good ones may stumble a little but then regain their balance and go on, the bad ones fall in the mud and wallow it. Consecutive 3-9 seasons looks a lot like wallowing to me.

and: we get pretty "good breaks" to beat KU and ATM last year. those games could have gone either way. as many have posted here before, we're every bit as close to 1 win as bowl eligible.

I didn't take it as those things being in order of importance. I agree with his article. Ridicule him if you want. Hawkins had 3 seniors and 9 juniors on last year's squad that he had recruited. All the rest were freshmen and sophomores. As for depth: All programs will have certain depth issues given the 85 scholarship limit. But CU now has a fairly well distributed squad, position to position. Remember, in Hawkins first year, he could not even run an eleven on eleven scrimmage due to lack of linemen.

Come on. That isn't what he was getting at. He is saying that the team has had its fair share of bad breaks. Not that those were why we lost to any given team.

I'm not saying bad breaks are the reason we've gone 16-33, but it does have a lot to do with some of the losses. Just like when teams are winning they need lucky breaks a lot, we have not had our share of luck recently.

Hell there were at least 5 BIG lucky breaks we got the year we won the national title. If those plays didn't go our way, we would be calling those bad breaks too and the woulda coulda shoulda.

And this is the big thing that is going right through a lot of the doubters minds like a hot knife through butter...

8. Experience. Finally, finally, Hawk will have a team with significantly more upper-classmen in the starting lineup than youngsters.
Last year, 18 players made their first career starts for the Buffs. It will be a surprise if CU approaches that number this year, as CU`s post-spring depth chart had just six sophomores and no freshmen listed as starters. Simply, most Buff starters have been there, seen that. If they can convert that experience into production, they`ll have the chance for a very nice year.

THINK ABOUT IT PEOPLE!!!!!

And again, in several of our wins during the Hawkins era, we have had good breaks. In 2007, CSU, OU, and TT all involved some breaks going our way. In 2008, EWU, WVU, and KSU all involved some breaks going our way. Last year, KU and A&M involved some breaks going our way. That is half the win total of the Hawkins era right there. The good breaks/bad breaks even out over time. If you are 16-33 over four years, luck has very little to do with it.

About 65% of football is luck, thats what a former player told me. Theres good luck and bad lucks, ruts and grooves.

I don't buy it, but that person is entitled to his opinion. We can talk about luck all we want, but we have looked completely overmatched far too often under Hawkins.

OK, here's 12 reasons why we won't be any better than we were last year.

1. O-Line still has yet to prove it can protect the quarterback and make holes for the
2. running backs. No depth, limited talent. Speedy and BLock look fine in flashes, but have never shown the ability to churn out 25-30 carries per game.
3. New DB coach.
4. New WR coach (probably a reason for hope, actually)
5. Lack of reps for Hansen. If we believe that Hansen is the guy - and just about everybody not named "Dan Hawkins" does believe this - then Hansen needs to be getting as many reps as possible. That's not happening.
6. Unproven WRs. Other than Scotty, who out of this group has done anything here? Simmons? Ummmm, no.
7. Special teams. Hard to say it could get any worse, but it could. There's nothing that indicates we'll be any better in this area. Hope, perhaps. Evidence? None. At this point, it's all pure speculation.
8. DB depth - we have none. Lose one guy and we're in a world of hurt.
9. Preparation and playcalling - nothing to suggest we'll be any better this year than we were last year in these categories.
10. Half the games are on the road. Guh.
11. Offensive identity? We still don't have one. Last year it was all about "downhill running". That worked out really well. No idea what kind of offense they'll try to put together this year.
12. Dan Hawkins. There's only so much "get your horns out", "cinch it up", and "Bring your lunchpail" that you can hear before the messenger becomes a clown. We've crossed that line. He is a fool. A football jester. It's hard to take somebody seriously when he tells you, with a straight face, that Toledo just played an "awesome" game. No Dan, they didn't, you just played really, really poorly. This deal is not "about to pop". The sooner you start working on actual football preparation and give up the witty platitudes, the better.

Then give up your tickets, its gonna be a waste of money for you. You can still tailgate though

Why should I give up my tickets? I wasn't aware that attendance at football games was limited to happy sunshiney smiley people only.

I'm merely pointing out that it's just as easy to come up with 12 reasons why we won't be any better than it was to come up with 12 reasons why we will. None of my reasons include an element of luck, either.

at 4:40, Dan tells a story about how he told Dick Tomey (Desert Swarm at U of A) that he didn't work on tackling at Boise. possibly, the strangest football related "quote" i've ever seen. ever.

Dude, be a fan, show some faith, even if we were 0-60, I would still have some faith each season. Life would be easier on you then.

Son of a bitch people, I'm not saying Hawkins is the next Bill McCartney, but Hawks first 4 years have been very similar to Macs first 4. The fans complaining have been very similar to Mac's first 4. The good wins, blowout losses, and bad losses have been very similar to Macs first four years. The cupboard has been very smilar to macs first 4 years.

It's a yin and yang thing. The fanbase negativity is in direct proportion to the coach's (and Woelk's) positive mental attitude.

Should the Buffs dismantle the Rams in the Cinch Jeans Bowl on Sept 4th, it would go a long way towards planting some seeds of optimism.

The big question is whether this collection of talented players can gel as a team and show up ready to win on opening day.

After last season's start, no one should be surprised by a little sceptism amongst the fan base.

I wont be shocked if we go 0-12 this year, but it makes it easier when you start off a new season with some hope. All the negativity really pisses me off.

Gawd damn, he's so full of sh*t it incredible. That's right Dan, don't get too high, don't get too low. Keep it on an even keel. Oh, the other team "got after us". Damn, that wasn't in the gameplan, was it, Dan?

Here's a quote (my own, kinda bastardized from other ones) that I've lived my entire military career by:

Luck is a combination of skill and preparation.

Dude may be right, that 65% of football IS luck. But goddammit, you can MAKE your own luck.

No. They're not even close. Mac went to a bowl game in year 4. He recognized that the system he was running for the first three years wasn't getting the job done, and he completely revamped it. All I see from Hawk is that "we're really close". Mac knew better. Hawk is too ignorant to understand.

Dude, be a fan, show some faith, even if we were 0-60, I would still have some faith each season. Life would be easier on you then.

Being a fan means holding those in charge accountable when they're not getting the job done. Otherwise, I'd be somebody who doesn't give a sh*t. Are you going to tell me with a straight face that you think Hawkins is getting the job done? You hope he'll have a good year this year. I hope so too. I have ZERO confidence in his ability to do that, though.

It's our last year in the Big XII, so it would be great if this squad can get their act together. They certainly deserve some wins, and hopefully the staff will put them in a position that will allow them to do that. Woelk is right that we SHOULDN"T get kicked around on Saturday as much this year, but the past 4 seasons have been ugly.

Actually it is harder to start off the season with hope because when they lose, it kills you. I am starting out the season expecting to lose every game. I'll still be mad if we lose, but I'll be ****ing pumped and happy as **** when we win.

With CSU though, I'll be pissed if we don't win by more than 15.
