The CU fanbase has the general reputation of being fairweather

But honestly, a shade under 48K on Saturday, considering the current state of the program, is pretty damn good. Props to all you guys on the board that went. Imagine if we could just start winning.

I honestly believe that with a strong 2010 season (or a new coach) + a Pac 12 announcement for 2011... that we will break the 30k mark for season tickets next year. We'll sell out Folsom regularly in the coming years.

I know it's hard to see it with how bad our programs have been the past 5 years, but we're about to turn the corner and our fan base is stepping up like I've never seen it.

agreed- I also thought the weather would have scared some people away who normally don't go to Buff games-
it was dry in Folsom however on my ride to Boulder I had the wipers on the whole drive-

I think the fairweatherness applies moreso to basketball than football...the fact that lately we've been consistently drawing close to 50k per game with the current state of the program is awesome...basketball on the other hand, I can remember when I was there the CEC would only have maybe 4,000 - 5,000 people per game (with the exception of KU or if another ranked team was coming to town), but when the team was on the bubble for the NCAA's, the attendance shot up considerably to 8,000 - 9,000+...

if you go for any game before conference play, it is pretty dead there. I have been there for game a few days before Christmas and there were like 1000 fans there, but this was probably 03 or 04 when RP was still in charge.

This is what surprises me the most about the last five years...the Buff fan support. I believe we really have shedded some of our reputation of not showing for games.

I think it is time to start considering expanding Folsom Field so the capacity will be there when CU starts winning big again.

yeah 48,000 'haters.' Signed, #73

**** you fans, signed Big Mike

Odd that so many fans would go to a game we have a chance of losing when we have never taken any risks in our lives.

Some of us, despite never having taken a risk, do have children and come from 2 parent homes. So we mostly get it.

In all honesty, the only people who accuse CU fans of being fairweather are Nebraskans. Go ask the folks at Cal if CU fans are fairweather. For all that went wrong in Berkely last weekend, the fact that 10,000+ CU fans were there probably did a lot to make the Pac 10 happy with their decision. Football coaches come and go, and with them the fortunes of their respective programs. Fans are fans forever.

FIFY on that first sentence.

I thought it was a pretty good showing for a team that has shown exactly squat since 10/07. CU has a good fan bae, not Alablam/Nebrsaky crazy, but a solid base. Win some games and average attendance will easily be in 51,000-52,000 range. The support is there, the production isn't. Having said that, if the Buffs drop the next two, it win't be pretty, but then again, that will be the third year in a row where the team looks really bad.

i think with so many games on TV these days, most fans are a bit fairweather. there's a thread complaining about "the students always leave early...." on virtually every football team bbs on Sunday AM.

i just think due to CU's unusually large out of state student population (compared to most schools) over the years CU doesn't have numerically speaking the "core in-state" fan base as other programs. CU's out of state students are in California, NY/NJ, Chicago.....not in the adjacent state even. and the usual pro sports entertainment dollar, transplants in the Denver area...contribute as well.

i think the students do a pretty good job these day in football and basketball given where the programs have been. esp. basketball. when i first started grad school in the last two Neu years, a couple losses meant the students go snowboarding on Saturday (usually leave thursday afternoon).

and, like i've posted many times....if CU was double the size that it is (~30,000) to Ohio State or Wisconsin size....double the alums, donors, etc.

I think we have always had decent football attendance for home games. What we usually didn't get was the Big 12 road game and low to mid tier bowl followings. I think that will change with our Pac move with our alumni on the west coast.

I have a buddy that went to the CU game with me, then we went to the GABF and he went to the Broncos game on Sunday. Now ask a nebraska fan what they did and they will say they went to the NU game and then went home and snuggled with their sheep fluffy the rest of the weekend. We have such a ridiculous amount of options of things to do here that we can never expect to get 100k at Folsom Field, but if we get a good product up there we can easily pack the stadium.

You are an optimist. I think CU hits a ceiling around 22,000 to 23,000 season tickets. There are no indication of a huge pent up demand for Buff tickets. Even back in the days of Coach Mac when enthusiasm ran high they did not sell out on a consistent basis.

True, but the metro Denver area has grown by about 1 million since 1990.

There were a million fewer people in Colorado when Mac was coach.

While I'll agree there isn't a pent-up demand for CU tickets, I will disagree that the ceiling is at around 23,000. I'd say the ceiling is quite a bit higher than that. If they can do an adequate job of connecting with the students when they're in school, and get them to buy in to the notion that they're Buffs for life, there is no ceiling for season tickets. They'll sell 2,000 more every year than they did the year before, all to recent graduates.

There's a tremendous opportunity at CU for greatness, it just has to be taken. It's there.

Crowds in the mid-to-high 40's for lesser opponents like this one over the past few years is a credit to Bohn and the marketing of the program, especially those "4 for $40" deals they had last year. Not sure if there were any special deals for this game but wouldn't be surprised if there was.

I think this is correct. One major reason people buy season tickets for any team is so they can ensure that they can get seats to every game. I know people who buy Yankee or Mets season tickets just so they know they can can go to post-season games (yes, Mets tickets.)

With very few exceptions, it has never been a problem to get CU tickets, even for a Nebraska game with something on the line. Until that changes, I think season tickets will be bought by those who enjoy the experience enough to go see CU play Iowa State and/or want to support the program and those people probably won't ever amount to sellout numbers.

We've been as high as 24k since Bohn took over, iirc. I believe we're currently at 20 or 21k and were 22k and change last year.

It dipped under 16k after the scandal, so there's been a lot of work to do.

There is absolutely no reason that 30k season tickets can't be our base with sellouts becoming the norm. Also, with the sellout of Club Level seating this year I think that if we see a stadium expansion it will be to add more of that.

there was a 4 for 60$ deal. last year, i went to the Mizzou game on a 2-for-1 deal, i think. me and a buddy who was in town paid 90$ (45 each) to sit on about row 20 in sec 103 or 104. on about the 20 or so, but being that low was great value.

. Not sure if there were any special deals for this game but wouldn't be surprised if there was.

As mentioned above, there was $60 for 4 deal and tix given away to the students, and presumably one parent, of a middle school in Golden. MB is doing an admirable job at filling the stadium, but some of the folks are there at a bargain basement price. If CU could begin winning more than they lose and give the fan the real belief CU might be able to beat anybody on the schedule, the stadium would fill. Many people just won't pay $50-60 a seat to see a team that gets beat by Toledo or run off the field by Cal....that's just the way it is.

Not trying to get all Sackman on everyone, but the "fairweather" tag is there for a reason.

I also do know that Bohn gave a ton of tickets out for free. I don't have a problem with Bohn getting butts in the seats, but he shouldn't have to give them away.

Things got pretty bad during the Barnett years. IMO it has a lot to do with the AD. Tharp didn't really do a great job at trying to fill the stadium up. There were always huge sections that were empty that I remember.

Bohn on the other hand, has done a great job of getting the stadium filled up. Bravo sir.

Just thought I'd throw this out there, but fans don't have to be students. I bet a lot of the season ticket holders for the big time programs didn't even go there, they're just local. For whatever reason I didn't get that gene and even though I have nothing to do with Colorado, the state or the university, I like it anyway. Bohn just needs to get the locals interested and to become fans. Hell when I was younger and I turned on the TV and saw Colorado getting blasted by Nebraska every Thanksgiving, I probably wouldn't have become a fan.

I'd love to see some statistics on the percentages of alumni vs. non-alumni football season ticket holders at BCS conference schools...

Could be kind of misleading. Case in point: My Dad is the season ticket holder, but I'm the alumnus. He didn't go to CU, but I did. Half the tickets are used by CU alumni, but the non-CU alumni is the name on the account. So, are these alumni tickets or not?

Is allbuffs.com an alumnus? Nope, but it holds tickets, too.

I'd count your family's tickets as non-alumni then - it's impossible to account for who actually uses the tickets but strictly from a "who purchases" standpoint, they're non-alumni...though a category for "non-alumni with alumni connections" could be added

Your second point with the AB tix does bring up a good point though - a third category should be added for "companies and groups" where the actual account holder is not an individual...
