Interesting national champion facts

Was just looking at past national champions and a lot caught my eye.

-From 1869-1900 the national championship was dominated by the Ivy leauge. Princeton, Harvard and Yale.

-A lot of early national titles with a 1-0 record. WTF!

-If you want the definition of DOMINATION, look up 1901 Michigan. 11-0-0 record and outscoring the opposition 550-0!!!:wow:

-Whats up with the 40's? Did they not play bowl games? Not a single national champion went to a bowl in that decade. Something to do with WWII?

-9 teams have won a national title after losing their bowl game. '35 SMU, '50 Oklahoma, '51 Tennessee, '53 Maryland, '60 Minnesota, '64 Alabama, '65 Michigan st, '70 Texas, '73 Alabama.

-Only two teams have won the national title with 2 losses. '60 Minnesota and '07 LSU.

-3 teams have won the national title with a loss and a tie. '65 Alabama, '74 USC and '90 Colorado.

-In modern time 2 teams have won the title with 14 wins. '02 Ohio st and '09 Alabama

-'84 BYU was the last team not currently in a BCS conference other than Notre Dame that won a national title. Before that it was Army in 1945.

-There have been 18 "split" national titles.
1925: Alabama/Dartmouth
1926: Alabama/Stanford
1928: USC/Georgia Tech
1932: USC/Michigan
1935: SMU/Minnesota
1938: TCU/Notre Dame
1939: USC/Texas A&M
1954: Ohio state/UCLA
1957: Auburn/Ohio state
1965: Alabama/Michigan state
1970: Nebraska/Texas
1973: Alabama/Notre Dame
1974: Oklahoma/USC
1978: Alabama/USC
1990: Colorado/Georgia Tech
1991: Miami, Fla/Washington
1997: Michigan/Nebraska
2003: LSU/USC

Reasons why I hate Tom Osborne:

1. He voted us low so that GT could sneak in and share it with us.
2. He duped the voters into giving him the '94 title outright without considering Penn St.
3. He duped the voters again into letting NU split the '97 title, which Michigan should own outright.
4. He duped the voters again to put their '01 team in the title game despite getting waxed by us.

Yale has two of the longest winning streaks ever. I'll never forget a great quote by Dan Fouts during the 2002 CU-UCLA game when they showed a graphic with the longest winning streaks: "No one wanted to play Yale back then."

Also, the 1990 Colorado NC team is the only champ ever the also have played the nation's most difficult schedule.

Are these in order by the amount of hatred you feel? I would put them in a slightly different order if that were the case.

i have a buddy who is a 1995 Penn St. alum (and CU PhD) who gets irate when you mention 1994. i can't tell you how many beer nights have ended with long, detailed explanations about Joe Jurevicious, Kijana Carter and Kerry Collins and how they would have run the Bugeaters. I tend to agree, but i've heard that riff about 10 times too many.

In all my years following the Big Ten, I am pretty sure this team is the best. And it might not even be close. This team just buried everyone, and scored 45+ points seven times, 55+ points five times, and 60+ points twice.

As I recall, they lost voter points when Indiana scored a garbage TD late, to make it look like a close game, after Joe had already called off the dogs. For the seasons following, Paterno began to run-up the score against teams, and gained a bad reputation in doing so. Catch 22.

Too bad the Nittany Lions defense sucked. NU had a great offense and defense. We gave a top notch Buff team their only loss of the season and beat #3 Miami on their home field in our bowl game. Who can tell me the best team Penn State played that year? Penn State's offense was no better than Colorado's that year and NU took care of CU's O did we not? We had to play the best D in college football in our bowl game. Ray Lewis and Warren Sapp anyone?

So you are penalizing PSU for being locked into a Rose Bowl against a lesser Oregon team? They'd have blasted anyone they lined up against, including Nebraska. I bet NU also criticized Michigan for the same thing in '97, since they got paired with Wazzu in Pasadena. The Rose Bowl is the BEST tradition in college football, but in these cases at least, it has hindered its participants.

You brag about your opponents star players because you didn't have many of your own. Meanwhile, PSU was dripping with NFL talent. That article lauds Frazier/Phillips as legendary, yet Collins/Carter were even better. Go look up the national awards and the NFL draft results.

Oregon definitely should have been in in 2001, and they proved that by crushing us.

FWIW, I don't think it would've mattered if you put nU, UO, the Buffs or the '84 Bears in there. Miami was so ****ing fast and talented that year that it really didn't matter. Miami would have won.

In my mind, the 2001 Hurricanes were the best team in the history of college football. Remember what they did to a ranked Washington team toward the end of the season (sorry DD)?

I still wanted the 2001 Buffs to get a shot at them. Playing Oregon was a bit of a letdown after being teased with a shot at the NC game, I think that's why the Buffs lost the Fiesta like they did. I'd like to think that they way the Buffs were rolling after beating NU and UT, we would have played the Canes alot closer than the Huskers did.

Colorado was the best team in 1994, the Buffs just had one bad day in a hostile environment.

It shouldn't have been. I think both CU and UO were thinking they'd have a chance to split it if Miami got upset. I think Oregon still thinks it deserves a split, despite Miami routing NU.

I am penalizing PSU because they had an easy schedule. They beat NO ONE who won more than 9 games. NU beat 2 teams who won more than 9 games. (including CU's only loss) Some say that CU team was better than the '90 team. NU beat two teams who ended up in the top 10. PSU? No teams they beat ended up in the top 10.

We did not have any stars on our team? Only more than 20 of our players went on to the NFL. Your ignorance on this subject is showing.

NU had possibly its best O-line, QB and RB of all time on that team. Some of the best FB we ever had were on that team. No stars? too funny. That is just on offense.
.
The hatred of NU on this subject is astounding around here. Read these FACTS objectively:
