He nearly beat ou, he crushed BYU, I'm 100 percent in his corner... his teams are disciplined and always play hard.... troy calhoun for buffs coach

Dude's a good coach. I believe he'd do well at CU if he can draw the assistants he'd need for recruiting. That's the issue.

His players are disciplined because that is how their entire day is.

I'm not convinced that it translates (see basketball).

He's an excellent coach. Love the team discipline,

Can't wait to see him with a PAC 12 calibre of athlete with toughness and discipline.

Its nice to talk about how disciplined his teams are, but have we seen it translate to the athlete we want at CU? Calhoun is a good coach, I will give him that, but as far as coaching CU I see Dan Hawkins ver 2.0, with him wondering why his system didn't work and why it is so hard to win at CU.

The more I think about I am on the Mac or Mc bandwagon before Calhoun.

Hawk has a system?

I love Calhoun at the academy. He's been amazing.

The more I think about it, the less I'm sure he's the guy for CU, though. For one thing, academy recruiting is TOTALLY different than recruiting to a BCS conference school. He could possibly make the transition, but do we take the chance? Would he be able to get the same level of discipline out of non-academy kids? I think he would, but again we're projecting. Would he ever be comfortable in Boulder, and would CU's administration ever really be comfortable with him? I guess if Mac could do it, he probably could too.

I'm not saying he's off my list, but I do have some questions about him at this point. And, of course, he has said AFA is his dream job, so there is the question of whether he'd even want to move to CU in the first place.

i guess with Calhoun, you don't know if you are getting Bob Knight or Tom Miller.

watching a bit of the AFA game yesterday, loved the offense but, again, at CU you are recruiting for players with designs on professional ball....not sure those types of talent want to play in the option/misdirection when the NFL is a lot of pass blocking and pro style/spread skill sets at the skill positions.

BCS,

Didn't learn your lesson with Bzzzzzzzz? Good coach, pro experience, zero experience recruiting to a BCS school. What works at the academy is completely different from CU unless you're striving for us to be a mid-level MWC team. What do you think the components of a good college coach are?

What lesson - Buzz was a damn good coach IMO, and the talent level at CU is way ahead of where it was under Patton. He got an ACC job at a school where his daughter attends - don't see the problem.

That said, I just don't like the idea of Calhoun at CU. He's 27-15 which is fine, but not exciting. It's not like he's beating BCS schools either - his biggest win at AF is arguably the BYU win this year, or maybe Utah or TCU 3 years ago. Honestly, I don't see why people are so excited about this guy. He was OC for a sh**ty Houston Texans team that averaged 16 points per game and went 6-10...BFD.

I think I would rather take the guy at Alabama that Calhoun from Air Force.

For one thing - he is FROM Air Force. i.e. he was the starting QB for Air Force Academy once upon a time. As a result, he has instant credibility and relationship with EVERY player on his team. I am not sure that will change-over to CU or the places CU would be recruiting. Calhoun has TWO years experience as a BCS coach - and that was at Wake Forest where he was the offensive coordinator in 2001 and 2002. From Wake Forest he went to the Broncos - where he was hired as a DEFENSIVE coach. He then made the move to the Houston Texans when Gary Kubiak was hired.

How about we spread our hiring radius outside of Colorado and Idaho? Knowing Bohnhead, he'll probably hire Calhoun or that Coach at Idaho.

The talent level is a bit better than when he got here but he also had ZERO winning seasons here and didn't show a whole lot of interest in recruiting (which is a major concern I have for a guy like Calhoun whose coaching resume is basically NFL and the Academy). It was nice that Burks fell into our laps but he NEVER recruited a half decent big man. And let's not kid ourselves. A huge part of the reason Bzz got the Wake job was his friendship with their AD. I'm much happier with Boyle.

Getting back to Calhoun, what kind of assistants is he going to bring with him and what are their recruiting ties? Like Buffnik said, he strikes me as a Barnett type. That means very good coaching and crappy recruiting. Barney had some very good recruits from the Weas to help him (see: 2001) and he still wasn't particularly successful here. How's Calhoun going to do stuck with Hawk's crappy recruiting classes?

College sports are and always have been about recruiting, talent can overcome mediocre coaching, no amount of coaching can overcome a massive talent deficit at a BCS conference school. And for the record Patton always had talented teams, he couldn't coach, Bzz didn't prove he could recruit consistantly at CU. Hence his record.

I posted this in a thread in Barzil- this needs to be brought up here

Calhoun has no California ties
Calhoun has no personality
Calhoun has what looks to be a small "coaching tree" to pull from for assistant coaches
Calhoun doesn't look to have what it takes to recruit to a BCS Conference school
Look at Calhoun's record- what are his signature wins at AFA ?
it's last year's win against #25 Houston (mid-major school) in the Armed Forces Bowl
In 2007 AFA beat a 3-9 Notre Dame team in South Bend (is this really a signature win?)

call me very concerned !!

and from rumors.... Bohn has major tunnel vision for Calhoun
sounds like donors are concerned that Bohn will go this direction even with threats that donations will be pulled off the table

if Calhoun scares you then you must e-mail Bohn and put on the pressure that he looks elsewhere or you too will cancel season tickets
& no longer donate-

Bohn is more concerned CU hires a 'good guy' who doesn't upset faculty than a winner

I'm not sure that Calhoun takes the CU job if offered. Look at the positives and negatives

+'s
Higher salary
Higher profile (PAC12 school, more national TV, etc.)
More control of and flexibility in program (doesn't have to conform to AFA schedule and entrance requirement)

-'s
AFA grad, dream job
Personality much better fit for AFA
Doesn't have to recruit against top schools to win
Doesn't have to win big to keep job (run a good program, win the CIC trophy regularly, go to a mid-level bowl and you are set)
Doesn't have to deal much with discipline (guys are already highly disciplined, if there is a problem often can be handled quietly within academy)
Not a lot of media pressure
System works at this level
Seems to be very happy at AFA, no guarantee of that at CU

We hire Calhoun and I'll see you guys in four years...his system works because he's at the academy. His guys are already highly motivated and intelligent. They have to listen to what he says because they have no choice. Totally different at a public school with regular atheletes. I think he's done a great job at AFA, I'm a former army officer so I'm pro military, but he's not the guy for CU. Hope we don't blow our next coaching hire.
