Does This Coach Mac Interview Change Your Mind About Him ?

That was a great interview. I don't know if Mac can turn this around again, but if the man wants to do it, doesn't Colorado HAVE to give him the job after everything he's done? I'm all for it. I don't think it is possible for Colorado to find a man who has more passion for everything related to CU than Mac.

"All right, let's get up and get it on!"-Mac

what kind of pressure would Mac be under, if he did return? If he lost the first 3 years, 'fans' would be saying he was a washed up old-fogey.

Personally, I don't think he's coming back, but I wouldn't be unhappy if he did. I don't think the age matters. Coaching is 95% recruiting and motivation. The rest the assistants can handle. Mac has the motivation part perfect, but who knows with recruiting. He would likely still do well selling to moms and the NC in his resume can't hurt.

Go Buffs!

And say what you want about his Promise Keepers but I'm sure that would get him a LOT of points with some moms from inner city rough areas where Mac made his recruiting bread and butter. A national championship ring and a man that founded his own ministry has got to get some brownie points. Many of these kids come from homes with little or no strong male role models. Mom's want to know that their kid will be taken care of as well as have an opportunity to go to the next level. Mac provides that and can sell the CU education angle as well.

Lol! And apparently college football has gotten so complex in the past 15yrs that there is no way that Mac could be able to understand what is going on with all of these "new" formations like the spread and wildcat. No way that a guy with a National Championship ring playing the nation's toughest schedule would be either able to figure it out himself or surround himself with an assistant that could.

errr, doesn't Wildcat = Single Wing?
And just look at what kNU is doing with Martinez now. Like even Grandpa Snyder said, all things are cyclical, I think Mac by surrounding himself with good assistant plus with prior research would be just fine installing an offense tailored to the kids we have now. Hell, I'm willing to bet he could get it done NOW!

I've been thinking about this Mac thing. I listened to a Mac interview last year talking about coming back in some sort of consulting capacity. He said "It wouldn't work. They would not like to hear what I'd have to say." I was thinking about that remark today as it realates to him coming back. You see, Mac knows what it will take for CU to return to the elite. He would not take on the task unless he were given assurances by the administration that they will do it his way. It then occurred to me that the beauty of Mac returning is that he will command the ear of the President, Chancellor, Regents, and AD. He will tell them what it will take and they will give it to him. it is unlikely that any one else would command that sort of respect.

It is simple. Mac DESERVES to have the job offered to him first. He has earned the right. If he chooses to coach then great, he will surround himself with great assistants. If he chooses not to then hopefully he helps us with a national search.

One thing that stood out to me is that Coach Mac timed his announcement about leaving the team FOR THE TEAM. HAWKINS, ARE YOU LISTENING?

There are a few things that bother me about the bring-Mac-back scenario. For one, he is very far removed from the contacts in the coaching ranks, which would put him at a disadvantage in bringing in quality assistants. It's not a given that if Mac were hired as the HC, that EB, Embrey, et.al., would leave their positions for Boulder. Secondly, he's been away from the recruiting trail for a long time. He wouldn't have the same contacts and relationships with the HS coaches, admins, etc. Granted, the assistants do most of the leg work, but the HC has to be actively involved and needs to have that level of trust and confidence with folks at the HS level. jfft

Have you ever talked to Mac personally? He can walk in the room and start talking with you-- and you feel like the most important person he has talked to all day. Mac is a great communicator and I have no worries that he would not be able to immediatly recruit like crazy. mac comes back and coaches would want to be part of that. I think Embree is back at a minimum-- maybe EB too. Just not sure if they can make both Embree and EB co-HCs. and they are both offensive side guys, so I am not sure how that would work out. Mac plus EB? We would have a stellar recruiting class THIS year.

Just read the article again. Wow! What a coaching tree. I'd forgotten that Jim Caldwell and David Gibbs had coached with Mac.

In my mind it better be offered to Mac first. Not only does he deserve such treatment, but the guy is the most dynamic person to be involved with CU football probably ever. His players loved him, he was able to get support from the administration and boosters love him. I just don't see a downside in this scenario.

I also feel CU needs to conduct a thorough search, but it needs to be done very quickly. We must shake things up to show the entire college football world (and more importantly recruits) that we are committed to winning again. I am at my wits end, and until a shakeup happens, I now have zero faith in this sorry excuse for an administration.

I was unsure about Mac coming back since he's been out of the game and coaching for so long, but after reading a number of posts and articles over the past few weeks I think it would be a good move. He demands attention and respect when he speaks, and the players would see that. Another concern is would he have the same support from the administration that he had before, but DBT actually brought up a good point which is that Mac wouldn't come back if he didn't think that he would have the appropriate guidelines and support in place to be successful again.

Everyone laughed at Dick Vermeil returning to the Rams after a very lengthy layoff. That worked out pretty well. There are examples of both success and failure. However, both reading and listening to Mac, he's tanned, rested, and ready. When i look at the list of candidates, Mac is by far the best one. He's one of the best coaches and program builders in the history of college football. We'd be crazy not to listen to what his plan is for CU.

I certainly stirred the pot on this one. Okay, just to play devil's advocate.....

Mac always was, and always will be a great communicator. No argument there. Having been away for 20 years, I think it's gonna be a rough climb at first, getting back into "recruiting" mode.

Different animal. DV didn't have to woo HS officials or sit in the front room of a 17-18 y/o and family and pitch the glories of his organization. He had a g/m help him fill out his staff for big $'s and a cast of many scouting/evaluating talent ready to play for money. I have no doubt Mac can still coach. I'm just not sold it's a guaranteed from-the-git-go success.

I love coach mac. He did incredible things for the program after the dark ages of fairbanks. But I think he's just been out of it too long. The game is light years different now that in was when he stepped back in the mid 90s, and It seems like to me in the world of football, if you aren't getting better, you're getting worse. Even with as good as I think he probably is, there's still a 3-4 year (at best) adjusting period that would happen, and I think there's enough talent on the team now to string together a decent season.

a. Nothing's guaranteed when you hire a new coach. E.g., Cawk won everywhere he'd been prior to here.

b. Mac was about recruiting and putting an amazing staff together. He has to do both of these to be successful, of course any coach does. However, Mac's track record & passion for Colorado set him apart from other candidates imo.

You make it sound like that Mac would just come in without having done any research as to what's been happening/changed on the college football landscape along with running a team/calling plays. That would certainly not be the case.

I guarantee you Mac has been doing his research and knows EXACTLY what needs to be done to turn this program around whether it be being hired at the end of the year, or if brought in at mid-season. Hell, he probably has his plan in place already and is just waiting for the opportunity to take over the interview in front of Benson/DiStef/Bohn tomorrow just like he did with Crowder/Casotti, the president, and regents back when he got the job the first time.

I think the idea of McCartney coming back, and bringing back with him someone young who can be either an offensive or defensive coordinator - and take over the job when McCartney decides to hang it up for good - is the best idea.

McCartney would certainly be my first call. If he is interested, I don't bother interviewing anybody else.

+1

If Bohn's interested in having Mac come back, and Mac's actually interested in coming back, it should be the only call he makes. Lots of similarities between now and the end of Fairbanks' days. Mac has the Boulder playbook under his arm. Will have to open up the checkbook to bring in the kind of staff Mac would demand - but worth it and I think he still has enough pull with the press to make it uncomfortable for anyone who'd want to tell him no.

CFB HCing is about program building. Mac Brown at UNC and at UT demonstrate that. You can get guys to do the XOXOs. To build a program is something very few people can do.

We should have listened to him when he left the game and gone with his appointed successor.

Mac is a good bet.

I often wonder what would have happened if Elliot Uzelac had gotten the job as Mac recommended. Where is that guy now, anyway?

That's what I was thinking too, that Mac would be more like an overseer of the program, probably like some or maybe even most other coaches are doing out there.
