AZ's BuffScoop broke the story a couple days ago on CU recruiting Greer.

Jashon Sykes, who went to Serra, has been helping with this one but both Cabral and Embree have personally been in contact. ASU leads and we have ground to make up, but we got an official visit on 1/14. This one could go until National Signing Day.

P.S. While he is being recruited as an OLB, Greer also has skills as a Fullback.

Scout reports: As a 2009 junior, had 140 tackles with 11.5 sacks and helped Gardena (Calif.) Serra to the CIF State D-III title.

It looked like Greer's numbers were down a bit as a senior (69 tackles according to MaxPreps), but there was an article a couple weeks ago that talked about the dominance of Serra's 2010 defense meaning there weren't a lot of tackles to go around and no one tried to run the ball on them:

When Serra linebacker Woodson Greer talks about his team's defense, there is no mistaking the pride and satisfaction he has in the hard-hitting unit.

Mention the defensive line and Greer feigns frustration.

"Man, they've been snagging all my tackles," Greer said, breaking into a big smile. "It's crazy. In the Chaminade and Notre Dame games, I had like no tackles.

"They have speed on the outside, strength on the inside. The talent on this line takes pressure off the linebackers and we can make plays."

On an unyielding defense that yields 13.4 points per game, the defensive line usually leaves opposing coaches in awe.

So who are the tackles? I think we need those guys.

Seems like the line is all D-1 talent. One guy is a commit to Cal, and the other 3 have FCS offers. I'm not sure how often that happens in Cali, but 4 D-1 worthy d-linemen would be a dominant force in HS football.

Nik, CU doesn't show up on any of the three sites as "schools of interest." Apparently, that has changed if he is taking one of his five visits here. At what point does CU show up on any of those lists?

At the point when one of those sites also gets this scoop. I'm going off AZ here.

Woot!!!!

Thank you very much.

We are bringing in athletes. Good job Embree.

Serra linebacker Woodson Greer has committed to Colorado. The Buffaloes scored another huge pickup Monday morning as the program continues to rebuild itself and reshape its program under new football coach Jon Embree. A home visit sealed the deal for Greer who texted Cali High Sports Monday morning saying “I have just committed to the University of Colorado!”

Cali High Sports is quickly becoming my 2nd favorite web site.

Looks like JE is using a bit of the old Mac philosophy in recruiting, get the best athletes you can and if they are good enough you can find a way to use them. If they go as expected to a 4-3 then we will need two pure OLBs on the field. You may also be able to move somebody to ILB and it is also not unusual for HS OLBs to bulk up and move to DE. We may even see a smaller guy play some at strong safety as a run plugger and against TEs.

Not a lot of teams have problems because they have to many guys who combine the ability to move and hit.

Enjoy your time in Boulder, young man.

Can't wait to see ya running onto the field behind Ralphie.

wasn't woodsen greer supposed to be a fullback prospect as well? That might explain all the lb's. If Willingham doesn't come here, we could keep greer at lb, if he does then maybe he's starting at fb next fall.We don't have a heck of a lot of options for FB for the offense we are going to be running.

And, of course, welcome to the Buffs Mr. Greer.

Welcome to the BnG Mr. Greer! Momentum is building! Embo and company had a good weekend closing the deal with these kids. Nice job.

So we're clear, Greer was recruited as a linebacker. Like Webb and Ahles, the fullback thing is another dimension he brings if called upon. Always good to have options. I remember how valuable Vrabel ended up being for the Patriots as a goal line fullback in addition to being a Pro Bowl linebacker.
