We have 14 commits so far, and 17 spots... If we got Willingham, Parker and Creer thats 17 and there are definitely others looking at us... so are we gonna have to cut some Hawkins scholly players?

Also i hope embo does what sark did in washington and has a live video feed of the fax machine. Cool touch.

live fax machine, plus official twitter, and blog flow would be really cool.

CU wont do that.

Anybody have that fax number?? I see an opportunity to have some fun... :smile2:

We could sign 20 players and be fine. Very likely that 2 or 3 guys currently on the team wont be back either beacuse they dont want to be or will get kicked off. There is always attrition. Also, someone we sign myy not qualify academically and if need be you can always grayshirt a player.

I thought Celestine was a special circumstance. I didn't think he had been awarded his scholarship back yet. I though Embree just wasn't honoring Hawkins promise. Was he on scholarship last year?

Celestine was put back on scholarship for the spring and fall semesters in 2010. Embree chose not renew that scholarship in December.

back to the OP's question i think it would be a wise move to over sign, we are goign to lose more people for sure, i'd think taking 20ish would be safe.

How may people typically drop off due to attrition each year? Who did we lost last year?

I remember Sumler was announced for sure after the semester started. I'm having trouble remembering whether there were any other scholarship guys. There may not have been. I do remember being pleasantly surprised at how few defections there were after Hawkins was retained.

I usually expect around 3 or 4 between injury, disciplinary action, grades and getting buried on the depth chart.

Not worried about oversigning, people can always greyshirt if everyone qualifies academically and no one gets taken off scholarship/put on medical hardship. Though I am hoping for a stellar class next year and would like to keep greyshirts to a minimum.

One concern I have about oversigning this year is that there's a distinct possibility that USC will have to cut loose upwards of 6-8 players from this class. Assuming the rest of the world oversigns, if we don't, we would be in an ideal position to get 3-4 of those guys.

I agree we can poach a few but we can't play that game and assume they will lose their appeal and screw ourselves when they buy the NCAA off next.

I guess I'm looking at it from the angle of we're not going to have that great of a class this year regardless. Why load up on middle of the road prospects when you can sign a full class next year of guys you've been in on from the beginning? If we have 15 scholarships available, I would sign 15. Then, if we have any attrition, we'll have space for the guys USC will be losing. I'd be shocked if the NCAA allowed USC to get away with what they're doing.

Odds are high that USC is going to have there penalty softened.

Based on what? Because USC really wants it to be? They're thumbing their nose at the NCAA as we speak. The NCAA said "You get 15 scholarships". USC said "we think we should be able to sign 25. And we're going to appeal your decision, and while we appeal it, we're going to sign 25 kids."

Look at it this way, they're going to appeal the NCAA's decision to... the NCAA. How often does that work out?

This brings up an interesting topic. What if U$C keeps pushing and gets the death penalty? Will it happen? 99% chance of no, but what would be the ramifications if it did? To the conference and us?

USC's Pat Hayden stated he believed they had a 10% chance of gaining anything from the appeal.

THey are simply stalling. By taking the bowl ban penalty and delaying the recruiting reduction they achieve a few things:

1. get these two penalties out of sync so they are not serving them concurrently
2. Get their scholarships back up to 85 (completely full) before they start to take the 10/year scholly penalty

They bought themselves a year.

They are not going to be penalized further, and certainly not the death penalty. They have appealed, creating a stall, to delay recruiting sanctions by 1 year.

So we are at 14 commitments... if we get Lucien, Willingham Nembot Asiata parker and say martin... that would be 20 in this class... who loses a scholarship...
