Uninformed radio waves

BehindEnemyLines

beware the habu
One of the afternoon sports talk-radio hosts made a comment today that almost made me drive into a ditch.

"Al" (from jersey) does this time slot with former big-leaguer Jim Trabor. Trabor is okay, but Al, who is even older than DBT, is about worthless.

They were discussing the salaries of (current) b12 BBall coaches. Al, with his infinite mummy wisdom, chimed in with something to the affect of -- just call Tad up and offer him $1.5mil a year and he'll say "where do I sign". Al then said..............

"Colorado? Nobody attends their games and their facilities are crap."

So Al? You left your research assistants in one of the pyramids? Did anyone tell you that boomer bball attendance has never been good, even during the days of billyball Tubbs and "can you hear me now" Sampson? No one told you that CU will have brand spanking new bball facilities this summer? No?

I tried several times to call into the show, and may try again tomorrow. I hope I get thru, and I hope I don't embarrass him too bad.

They can get away with saying completely ludicrous statements because so far as their audience knows, they're right. Who's going to argue?

The idea that Tad Boyle would go to OU is beyond absurd. It's laughable. Why would anybody want to coach a team in the Big Tex? Didn't we just learn what it means to be a team not named Texas in this league? You think Boyle, who still says in interviews that the NCAA snub "stings", is going to put himself into a position to get his teeth kicked in by Dan Beebe and Deloss Dodds every year? He is going into the Pac 12, where his team will be a preseason top 3 or 4 team. He'd be idotic to go to Oklahoma, and everybody knows it. Everybody with half a brain, that is.

If Boyle was going to come to Oklahoma, he'd be smart enough to wait for Oklahoma State to come open again, but I think Ford is on the verge there so that's out. OU's hoops program is an afterthought both inside the school and in the fan base, so if he wants respect he'll stay at CU.

The Sports Animal is... a train wreck, to be polite about it. Jim Traber is good on the radio as a host, but he's lazy in doing homework on anything outside of baseball and football. He hated the Thunder drafting Westbrook and said it would be a disaster. But this year Westbrook is an All-Star. Oops. Al is an immature idiot who takes vacations in Communist countries. I'll leave it at that. The whole station is pretty bush league and all they really care about is OU football.

The station is a joke. I'm so glad I have XM now. I used to listen but don't anymore. Bad bad bad radio and 6-minute commercial breaks every 12 minutes. Blech.

Jeez. He must not get away much.

Here is a photograph of Al Eschbach (the little guy in the middle) standing next to Jim Traber (the big guy in the blue shirt).

But this is perhaps my favorite picture of Al Eschbach...

They do make a certain point - given the success on the court this season, Tad Boyle probably is UNDERpaid. But nobody knew that a year ago when he was hired. In fact, the Tad Boyle hire was luke-warm amongst most CU fans, and was often the point of attack for those who don't like Mike Bohn. Now, a year later, Tad Boyle's Buffs are heading to the NIT final four, most people think they were wrongfully denied a spot in the NCAA tournament, and he looks like a great hire.

If OU had been in this same position one year ago, and Boyle was still at Northern Colorado - there is NO CHANCE OU would even remotely consider hiring him. But because of one year of success at what is considered a bad basketball program, historically, and there is some interest.

Oh - and I should defend Al a little bit. He doesn't like Communist countries (are there such things, anymore). He likes heat. He likes the sun. He loves Costa Rica. He loves Dubai. What's amazing is that he makes the kind of salary from that radio station that he is able to take two week vacations to those types of places.

holy cow do you work for the Denver Post? You completely twisted around a quote and then reprinted it as fact.

"...almost as worthless as DBT..." :sad2:

Great analysis tante. My take was that deebeetee had conveniently missed a simple comma -- that maybe he forgot where he put his bifocals -- when he read:

"Al, who is even older than DBT, is about worthless."

but tante exposes the possibility that our old friend might just be a DP mole !!!!

So, deebeetee, which is it? Is this a case of "misplaced eyes", or are you a Post spy ???

I'm losing sleep over how much I already miss the Big 12.

i'm sure the talk radio all over the Pac is governed by well-informed and insightful sports talk radio. just like we have here in Denver. ;) However, i do have some experience with the Sports Animal and it sucks out loud.

you mean like ludicrous statements about how Tennessee basketball has absolutely never been any good and has no tradition? hehe. j/k

I dont think that OU supporters understand the national perception of their school. (****hole school / place that is good at football) Football has been great in the past, so football coached may go there if paid enough. Basketball coaches will only go there if paid way more than their worth, and are unhireable anywhere else in the country.

OU better start calling Bzzzzzzdelik if they want a CU coach.

that sounds like someone who lives in Austin, Texas. OU has been a top 15 type program for 30 years. that the fan base is ambivalent except when they are winning, is a problem for them....but the hoops have been good.

just in the last decade they are ranked #14 by this source (arbitrary, i know), and #8 in the last 31 years here. there are others.

The only thing Tad would agree to would be to watch Al Eschbach fight David Ubben in a cage match in OKC.

I thought he sucked at typing and left out the "as",

Basketball coach's salaries are not very cut and dry. Look at Boyle's contract (it in another post somewhere here), he doesnt make crap guaranteed, but he has a ton of incentives. And with winning as he is, and his program being a clean program, he is making a good bit of money. Now when his contract is up for negotiations, I imagine he will get a very good bump as long as he is still winning.

i think Boyle will get a decent raise as soon as a few weeks from now.

Money talks. If a school like Oklahoma starts throwing $2 million out there, and he's making less than $1 million at Colorado - that's not going to be a difficult decision to make.

That being said, OU's last dozen hires have all been low budget hires. Castiglione has shown that he would prefer to hire a young hungry coach, who can be hired on the cheap, and then give raises if the coach is successful. He hired Bob Stoops as an assistant coach for $700k a year. He hired Jeff Capel for less than $1 mil a year from VCU. He hired Sonny Galloway (baseball) from within the program and paid him a modest salary. Even when they hired their new football radio play-by-play guy, Castiglione hired a guy with absolutely no football play-by-play experience and paid him peanuts. Look back at when OU hired their women's basketball coach (before Castiglione's time) they hired the local high school girl's coach.

All that being said, the rumors here are that Marquette's coach is OU's #1 target.

i don't think there is any way Tad is going to OU. he has to believe in himself enough that he thinks he can win here more than just pick up digs and move to Norman, in his home state....KU is the job i fear.

coaching speculation is the stuff of baseless fantasy. like Rick Barnes leaving Texas for NC State, or Tom Izzo going to Bama last year because he and Saban are old buddies.

we should be happy our coach is being talked about.

Don't bother calling in. Once this jack*** has a real understanding of our program and the greatness of the University and State of Colorado he will probably move here. We don't need any more of these genius transplants.

word on the street is that Ricardo is available.

You're missing a key point here, even if OU offers $2 million, he would still have to live in Oklahoma. Compared to Boulder. Argument over.

Right - which is why Colorado has been so successful at finding and hiring both football and basketball coaches over the past twenty years.

Analogy Fail. This discussion has nothing to do with us hiring coaches. It has to do with other places hiring coaches away from us.
