Remaining BBall Recruiting Targets

DenverBuff

Douchebag
Can someone provide an updated list of remaining bball recruiting targets? I've seen some comments that we are in on several other players, but it's not clear who they are. Assuming Burks is gone, I beleive we have 1 more spot (maybe 2 if they ask Eckloff to walk-on, which is what tey should do).

The names I've seen are:

- Rodrigo Silva
- Dylan Talley
- LeAntwan Luckett

Who are the other possibilities? I'd like to see us take 1 more wing (again, assumings Burks is gone) - either Talley or Luckett - and 1 more BIG (assuming Eckloff is gone) - Silva. I'd like to see a couple of other names added to the list of possibilities.

We have 4 PGs (Tomlinson, Sharpe, Dinwiddie, and Booker), 2 wings (Adams and Brown), 3 FWDs (Dufault, Roberson, Cain) and 2 Cs (Mills and Tunks).

Welcome to the board, DenverBuff.

You can find a lot of the info you're looking for in the 2011 MBB Recruit Profile Index. There's also a pinned thread in this forum that contains the links to the Indexes for different years.

Also pinned in the general CU Basketball Forum is the current roster: http://www.allbuffs.com/showthread.php/51498-2010-11-University-of-Colorado-Basketball-Rosters.

Really good topic and I'll summarize here:

- Men's basketball has a scholarship limit of 13. The Buffs are free of NCAA penalties, so we will have 13 players under scholarship for 2011-12.

- Current roster projected to 2011-12, by class, is as follows:

Seniors:
PG Nate Tomlinson
SG Carlon Brown (redshirting this year; transferred from Utah)
SF Austin Dufault
PF Trey Eckloff

Juniors:
SG Sabatino Chen (redshirting this year; transferred from Denver)
SG Alec Burks

Sophomores:
PG Shannon Sharpe
SG Jeremy Adams (incoming recruit)
SF Andre Roberson
C Shane Harris-Tunks (redshirting this year due to injury)
C Ben Mills (will possibly redshirt next year to aid his long-term development)

Freshmen:
PG Spencer Dinwiddie (incoming recruit)
SG Askia Booker (incoming recruit)
PF Damiene Cain (incoming recruit)

That adds up to 14, which puts us 1 over. It's very likely that this is Alec Burks' last year in Boulder. Assuming he leaves for the NBA, that puts us at the 13 scholarship limit.

However, Boyle has always said since the early signing period ended that he is looking for "1 or 2" more. I have always assumed that Burks was the "or 2" and that we were always going to take 1 more regardless of the decision that Burks made on the NBA vs coming back for his junior year. That leads me to believe (totally spit ballin' here without any inside info) that either Chen's scholarship was only for this year to ease the transition or that Eckloff has decided to transfer somewhere he will get playing time for his senior year.

If we do end up with another scholarship to offer, my expectation is that it will be a frontcourt player. I could see a scenario where Boyle wanted to replace all that offense and went with a wing player such as Luckett or Talley, but my guess is that's the less likely scenario. Adams fills that need.

Guys I'm keeping my eye on:

Rodrigo Silva - JC transfer who is originally from Brazil. He'd be a sophomore and could give us a triple-double the hard way (points, rebounds and blocked shots).

DeAndre Daniels - Postgraduate who played with Spencer Dinwiddie at Taft. He's a natural "3" with a pure jumper who would likely be an instant star at CU. Unfortunately, I expect him to sign with Duke or Kansas.

Anthony Norris - SF who has bounced around from school to school. Don't know if that's a red flag or not. Played this year for Christian Life Academy in Humble, TX, and there hasn't been any info in a while. I'm not even sure that we're still recruiting him.

Here are some others that we haven't profiled on AllBuffs but I'm keeping an eye on:

Kevin Johnson - huge guy who would play PF or C at 6'9". He's on Dinwiddie's Taft team. Doesn't show a CU offer and Rivals says it's Illinois or USC. But he's uncommitted, so it bears watching.

Daouda Soumaoro - another huge guy who would play PF or C at 6'9". A bit more raw. He's originally from Mali, Africa. Book on him is that he's a high motor guy who attacks the glass and plays hard on defense. CU definitely showing interest but no offer reported.

Nick,

Great summary of the situation.

Couple of comments:

I wonder if Eckloff has decided to go elsewhere. He will be a senior next year and his chances of seeing significant playing time would appear to be going down, not up. He hasn't developed at CU and his style of play doesn't seem to be a good fit for what Boyle is trying to do. I think that is more probable than Chen not being on schollie although who knows. Another outside possibility that I wouldn't like to see is Tomlinson deciding to return to Australia. He likes Boulder and Boyle seems to like his game but he is far from home and been hurt a lot in the last couple of years.

If we bring in another recruit this class I have two preferences. One is Daniels who has star potential, I agree however that it would be a bit of an upset for us to get him with the other options he has on the table. Once the tourney is over and the big name schools start losing underclassmen to the draft then his options will open up even more.

Second is one of the big bodies. With only Harris-Tunks and Mills as true post players we are very thin, figuratively and literally, at the position. Mills could really use a redshirt year and while I have seen flashes from him that indicate he will be a skilled player I don't think his frame will ever fill out to be a real banger in the middle. Harris-Tunks is stronger but also not a classic muscle guy. His minutes may also be limited for a time as he recovers from a serious leg injury so we may have playing time available immediately for the right guy. With the scoring potential from other players including Brown and an rapidly improving Roberson this guy won't need to be an offensive presence as much as a post defender and rebounder. Dufault contributed admirably in the middle this year but his true position is at PF and he will be a senior as well.

I am going to go out on a limb and sat that Burks doesnt leave this year, but leaves next year. And Adams takes Chen's scholarship (I remember reading something about Boyle giving Chen a scholarship on a 1 year basis, basically because he didnt have a recruit to fill that scholarship up). So next year we would have 5 departing (Brown, Tomlinson, Eckeloff, Dufault, Burks), the year after that we would only be losing Chen, a non scholarship player?? So a off year in recruiting??

Also, for now, what are the possibilities that Eckloff gives up his scholarship becomes a walk-on player? I know that is typically not looked highly upon, but I can see a lot of pressure on him to give it up as he isnt contributing. I think Trey would have to give Boyle a reason to take his scholarship ie. get in trouble. Either way it sounds like there may be a interesting off season as far as personnel

... the year after that we would only be losing Chen, a non scholarship player?? So a off year in recruiting??

I'm not sure we'll have anyone in that 2013 class. Hornbuckle transferred, Burks will leave early, Sharpe and Harris-Tunks both got pushed back a year due to injury years.

There's always a chance that Boyle will look for a transfer to plug in and keep some class balance. Maybe he'll find another Carlon Brown situation. Or maybe he'll find another JUCO like Marcus Relphorde to put in that class.

Thanks, Nik. I know a lot of people have commented that Chen is on scholarship, but everything I have seen published has him as a walk-on. Does anyone have an official source that shows he is on scholarship?

what about that big kid from Oklahoma? are we still after him?

Christianson would be in the 2012 class. Looks like we'll take 4 that year, so we've got 2 spots still open after the 2 verbals we pulled in. Both the guys we got (Scott & Gordon) would play the "3" or the "4". I'd expect either 2 guards or 1 guard/1 forward for the remain 2 scholarships. Christianson would definitely still be in play for us, but we're probably higher on some of the Cali forwards we have already offered.

P.S. Basketball recruiting can be confusing since we have an Early Signing Period in November and the Regular Signing Period the following April. Currently, we're talking about 2011 prospects for the April period who would be on next season's 2011-12 roster. We are also talking about 2012 prospects who may sign in November but we won't see in Boulder until the 2012-13 season.

Chen as a scholarship athlete still puzzles me

Chen is not a big scorer but he is a PAC 12 quality defender. When he was playing at DU he was a level above Sun Belt players on the defensive end of the floor. He won't be a superstar but I think he can be a solid contributor for CU.

Thanks to all on this thread for some very interesting observations. That said, I would like to offer a couple of my thoughts. As I recall, some CU players in the past declared for the draft, took the tour to see where they stood, get the exposure and develop ... and then withdrew and came back to school. I would think that Alex Burks is almost certain to declare ... but I think that he will be back. In my opinion, Alex still has some need to grow into his body and become stronger. The pro season is 80+ games and they are exceptional full grown men out there beating up each other in most every game. He would be much better prepared to compete at that level a year or two from now. Also contributing to his decision will be the guidance of his mother and father, who from what I can tell are very wise and grounded people who value the ultimate outcome for Alex about money right now. Add to that, the culture and leadership of Boyle and he has a very attractive environment if he chooses to stay. Because of this, I think that we will have an opportunity to see him next year.

As for Trey, I think that he is a skilled basketball player, but is more into academics and becoming a doctor than he is about playing the game. He appears to be a well balance person with his eye on excellent long term goals in life, but that does not translate into the "fire in the belly" needed to be a force (or even starter) in top flight DI basketball. I don't seen him leaving to go anywhere else for playing time. I see him staying the course for his primary objective at CU ... getting a good education. I don't know about the probability of him volunteering to give up his scholarship and becoming a walk on. I do have some reservations about taking it away from him. For all that I can tell, he has been a supportive team mate to those who are seeing playing time... and I believe that "a deal is a deal" when it comes to keeping commitments.

Good comments. ^^

I don't think Burks knows right now which direction he is going to go. My guess is that it is probably 60-40 in favor of turning pro but who knows. It is hard to turn down the money and come back when you have dreamed about playing in the NBA and helping out your family. I do think he would be helped by another year of college but the decision ultimately is his to make.

I also don't see Tad pulling Eckloff's schollie. That is bad for team moral and a real negative on the recruiting trail. As you state Trey is serious about his studies and has goals for the future. Pre-med is difficult and time consuming, especially as it gets closer to graduation. Trey seems to enjoy being part of the team but I wonder if he hasn't already talked to Boyle and his parents and decided to dedicate himself to his studies his senior year in preparation for the difficult process of getting into med school.

From all indications Tad is expecting to have another schollie available for next year. If Burks hasn't already decided and just not announced then Trey would seem to be the logical choice. I don't see Tad pulling his schollie so his voluntarily leaving the team makes a degree of sense. I just don't see a lot of other possibilities unless it is something out of the blue like I mentioned above with Tomlinson or something similar

Scott Hastings said tonight that we had another recruit at Tuesday's game. Program-changing type guy who is a bigger prospect than Adams was (that's saying a bit). Got the VIP treatment. Liked the trip a lot more than expected. Duke among the programs recruiting him.

Guy on the Rivals board said he saw a guy who is around 6'7". Wearing a black letterman's jacked with a gold 'K' on it, though.

Any ideas who this might be? I guess he's not necessarily a 2011 recruit, but if he is then DeAndre Daniels is the most likely fit even though the jacket doesn't make much sense (Taft & IMG Academy).

Well said, I also dont think Tad would ever pull a scholarship for anything other than poor behavior.

If Eckloff is a great student...he could go on academic scholarship to free up a scholarship

Is that legal? I was thinking the same thing, but then what stops any student athelete that has good grades to go off of athletic scholarship and move into a academic scholarship? It would make the scholarship limits basically useless.

To go on academic scholarship, he would have to stop playing basketball.

Saw him. he stood out from the crowd. That atmosphere had to be impressive to anyone, especially if they came in with low expectations. The 2d half was electric.

Dammit Nik, stop getting my hopes up!

Thanks that is what I was thinking, what about being on the Practice squad?

I'm pretty sure that all team activities would be off limits. Participating would make someone a part of the team. And a player can't be considered a walk-on if he's getting financial aid.

I posted a photo of Daniels on Rivals. The guy who had seen the "recruit getting the VIP treatment" said that was him. Sporting a goatee now, though.

I hope this is correct. I'd literally lose my chit if we signed Daniels.

If Trey went off schollie it would pretty much end his BB career unless he was willing to pay for the whole thing himself. I don't think he would be allowed to participate in any official team activities without being counted if he is recieving any type of financial aid from the school.

As I posted earlier what wouldn't surprise me is if he gave up basketball entirely and focused on his studies. If he wants to go to med school the competition for admission, especially to the better schools, is tough. He may just decide to focus his entire energy on that process.

i assume this is the photo in his profile?.

Edit: not who I saw.

Actually, I used this one:

Any chance you saw Jeremy Adams:

Or are we looking for a mystery 3rd candidate?

I had thought that Leantwan Luckett made logical sense, since he and Adams are both from Mississippi, I knew that Adams was visiting, and it wouldn't surprise me if they decided to travel together:

Not that I would complain or that I'd put it past Tad to pull it off, but it would take a minor miracle to pull in Daniels.
