He tells a story of pushing his teenage daughter, Hannah, to be more ruthless in her tennis game. "I tell her there comes a time when you have to have this mindset when you go out there," he said. "You have to put your throat on the other girl's throat. You can't let her breathe.
"I say something like that, and then my wife tells me, 'You know, not everybody's like you. Not everyone wants to be like that all the time.' But I guess that's just who I am. No matter what it is, I just like winning."
"You have to put your throat on the other girl's throat. You can't let her breathe."

Tape?

also... i see that u are from Midlothian VA.... I spent a week there for a roller hockey tournament at a great facility in Midlothian.....
VCU fan?
Seems like putting your throat on the other persons throat would be counter productive. He meant foot, right?
Just curious....

maybe he is correct about the CSU game. We did not play extraordinarily well, CSU just sucks. Maybe to Embree the score didnt matter, but the effort he saw on film. Or maybe the writer just doesnt double check his facts.
This kind of attitude goes all the way back to Lombardi. Jerry Kramer (HOF guard for those of you who are to young to remember the Lombardi Packers or the echos of them) said a number of times that some of the hardest weeks of practice were after wins that Lombardi thought they didn't play well in. Other times after a loss when the players expected to get reamed, Lombardi came in and either took the blame himself or told them that they played well and got beat by a better team that week and proceded to move on to the next game.
I am getting the idea that Embree is wired in a way that excellence is the standard, win or lose. Of course if you meet the standard of excellence then you are going to win a lot more than your share.
I honestly think we won that game on luck, and if CSU had showed up to play serious football we would have been in trouble.
That's taking it a little far. CSU was never a threat in that game.
I am not saying given the way CSU played that we were in trouble. They played horrendous football. However like i mentioned we kept them out of the end zone due to some very lucky turn overs. Most teams would have killed us with the performance we gave in the second half. First half was decent football second half we just coasted with the lead we had. That's taking it a little far.
