Offensive line recruiting

Think it is time to start getting concerned on this front. We have Gerrard Kough in the fold (still could get interested if other BCS schools start) and Jeromy Irwin is a strong lean. Plus we are in good shape with Jordan Roos. After that, it gets pretty dicey:

Shane Callahan-committed to Auburn and while we still have a shot, time is getting short on this one (early enrollee).
Alex Kozan-I was actually surprised to see him mention us in his top seven lately. He has always appeared to be an OOS lean to most and not sure much has changed.
Colby Cyburt-We have been in his top three for a while, but is considered a Stanford lean.
Jordan Williams-Hard to get a read on him, but we probably get an official visit.
Garrett Weinreich-We are in good shape to get an official visit, but I am guessing he ends up in Corvallis with his QB teammate.

The whole "it's still early" excuses are out the window now and most of our top targets have committed elsewhere.

I still believe it will be a solid OL class. The disappointing thing is that the level of talent in our state and region was unprecedented this year. It could have been among the best CU OL classes of all time.

O/L recruiting is important this year. We have 6 seniors who will be gone after the seasons end.

The depth chart lists only one Junior, and 4 Sophs, so it's possible they'll target a JC or two. Anyone hearing anything on that front?

The staff is going to have a pull a surprise or two. Getting Cyburt or Kozan would qualify. Flipping Callahan would as well.

Nothing yet. Have not heard much of anything on JUCO players period, which is not necessarily a surprise.

BTW, Wisconsin is putting together an exceptional OL class. I am jealous.

What I have heard is the Embree will almost completely ignore JC recruiting. We saw 2 this year, but both were full qualifiers out of high school (and one came in as a freshman who just took some classes while being sure not to take so many that his eligibility clock started).

I think if we can find a JC lineman who is a December graduate and wouldn't have any issues with admissions or being on the eligibility track, we might look at one. But those players are few and far between. I'd actually think that a senior transfer who is buried on someone's depth chart (Logan Gray scenario) would be much more appealing. Those guys are hard to find, though.

Problem, in addition to the admissions thing, with JC linemen or the 5th year senior thing is that the O-line is based a lot on coordination and synergy with your linemates. A WR, RB, or even a DB can often drop right into a team and if his individual skills are good he can contribute right away. Linemen, especially on the OL have to learn not only the techniques used by the individual team and the plays but also how to fit into the unit.

You get some exceptions like when Loadholt went to OU and stepped right in but they aren't overly common.

By the time a guy fits in and is really contributing his time is almost up.

Yeah - it isn't pretty right now. However, I am hopeful with this staff that the never-give-up attitude towards recruiting will flip a few kids as time wears on. If not...

We better hope we land a couple late bloomers like Bakhtiari. One thing to remember is Alex Kelley is pretty much a member of this next class. We need some more Guards tho

Our nucleus on the OL is largely young including at RT, LT, and Center. I imagine that Asiata (grades permitting) will be starting at RG next year. He'll be traveling this season IMO. Mustoe and Lewis also look like pretty solid prospects and I think we're deep at center, especially with Kelley Gray-Shirting.

What we need to find this class are some young maulers who can focus at guard but able to play tackle/right tackle in a pinch.

It sucks that we are slow in this area. Still a lot of time to turn it around. Hell, how many guys did we have last year when Embree took over? 1? Kelley? He rounded the class out nicely.

Post spring depth chart, not including graduating seniors

LOT- Bakhtiari(so), Lewis(fr)
LOG- Asiata(fr)
C- Munyer(rfr), Cotner(fr), Kelly(fr)
ROG- Crabb(rfr),
ROT- harris(so), Mustoe(fr)

We need to still make a huge run at Callahan, Thurston, Kozan and Flores. Get them in for homecoming against Oregon, black out Saturday.

As far as the OL depth chart is concerned, we also have Dannewitz and Handler returning. Since Kelley is a grayshirt, let's call him a 2012 guy to go along with Kough. That's a 2-deep at every position heading into the 2012 season with 2 of the 5 we need for a 3-deep already committed. We need more young talent, not bodies.

Until the team gets 6 games or so under their belts... I hate to break it to ya... IT'S STILL TOO EARLY.

Nothing's going to change until the kids see what Ebree is going to bring to the program, on the field, against other teams, and to think otherwise is foolish or overly optimistic. Need to reset your realism meter.

Until proven otherwise, on the field, this is stil the same ****** program that CU has had for the last 5 years and kids are going to go elsewhere. It is what it is.

While I basically agree, I'm worried that recruits are a results-oriented, and with our schedule the results may not show the improvement I expect we'll see on the field. So it's still going to be a sales job to point that out.

True. But it's easier to sell style of play when you can show it, even if you didn't come out ahead in the win column. This is what Stanford did off Harbaugh's opening 4-8 season.

I hope this is not a indicator of problems with Marshall. And if it is, hope Embo will take the requisite action.

Roos to Purdue. OK, so I get kids who have spent their entire lives in Colorado wanting to go out of state for college. I can undersstand losing some recruits to schools like Auburn and Wisconsin. But we're getting consistently passed over for tier 3 schools like Purdue and San Diego St at this position. Hard to believe that this is bad luck at this point.

Seriously, unless there's a bunch of Erich Wilson types (unknowns to us and recruiting sites) that we are targeting, we're in deep ****.

Also, I'm eagerly awaiting the next tier of players that bigbang thinks we will get and be fine with. After all, Bahktiari is working out fine for us, therefore all 2* OL are gems.

How many people were high on Nate Solder when he came to CU....not too many...then he hit a growth spurt, changed positions and became a first round draft pick. With CU playing a pro style offense and using the Shanahan model of blocking from what I hear, it won't be long before offensive lineman as a step to the NFL. Patience is a virtue. Get the right guys, not the first guys.

For every Nate Solder there are 10 guys or more who don't grow, don't develop, etc. and at the same time you are waiting for them to blossom into a quality O-lineman the guys you didn't get are on a 2-deep someplace winning football games.

I'm not in panic mode right now. I believe that we will have the Irwin kid on the commit list officially in time and he will be a quality prospect, Kough is a developmental guy like you are talking about but I think he will be fine. With the grayshirt center we picked up that's 3 solid prospects coming into the program since last years LOI day. I also think we will pick up at least one or two more solid kids at the position so I'm not in panic mode.

O-linemen don't get the press and they don't get big stats, the only glory you get as an O-lineman is to look up on the scoreboard and feel satisfied that you are where it all starts. Typically O-linemen are slower to commit and more likely to look at the state of the overall program. It is very important that we go out this year and show that the program is headed the right direction. That doesn't neccessarily mean we have to win a bunch of games but we have to look like we are on the right track. Do that and I think the O-linemen will follow.

If at this time next year we are looking at a bare cupboard at the position then we need to panic. The game starts and ends on the LOS and these guys are key, this is the reason that Neu will be losing his job because he is never able to recruit and build the O-line to work for all the skill players he recruits.

Color me unimpressed if "solid" is the best description we have for the OL class in February. This should be a special OL class, so much talent in-state and all over the West.
