Maybe New York Times will publish an article about the Regents and Their hiring process?

The Denver Post article earlier quotes a guy who proposed a tweak to the current system.
Obviously we would need to change the state constitution to get rid of the Regents.... Which seems like a long shot.
This guy proposed to Hick that they add 8 appointed seats, which would be filled by a non-partisan panel of experts. This wouldn't require a change to the Constitution.
This means that the elected BoR could still override a vote 9-8 if needed to ''enforce the will of the people' we would at least have people on the BoR with a variety of relevant expertise who are there to work for the institution, not constituents who might actively hate the school.

I don’t have an answer, but I know what we currently have isn’t working. Politics shouldn’t enter this process, IMO. It seems that politics has been the overriding concern from the get-go. The more I read about Kennedy, the more I’m astonished he is the “sole finalist”. We have to set our sights higher. I’m a little concerned, though, that we may be in a spot where we are unable to attract anybody better. That gets us back to the BoR dysfunction and how it impacts the ability to conduct University business. What a mess.
It does make me wonder what their hiring criteria was. All of the things we all seem to think are important (alumni relations, fundraising, staff retention, student engagement, etc) all seem to be afterthoughts to him. By extension, they appear to have been afterthoughts of the BoR as well. So what were they thinking?
Like you said, how is this guy the sole finalist?
Sorry for being unclear- I do not believe it should be a fundamental pillar of the strategy for CU. I think that it should be a tactical goal. I believe that if there is more focus on being a leader in the scholarly community in other ways that the graduation rate will follow.
This is all notwithstanding the body of research that shows that performance-based funding does not necessarily improve graduation rates.
A serious question since you seem to have some background and I'd be interested to know- do you know the mechanism by which funding is influenced by graduation rate at CU?

TBH, much of the state carries a particular disdain for the the CU system. That’s at least historically been the case.
Hesitant to put my name on the CU presidential feedback being an alumnus (my father and sister are as well as my younger sister currently attending) and season ticket holder. I doubt anything would come of it, but I wasn't exactly nice in my review of his qualifications.
They should just find somebody else, this isn't gonna end well, if they hire him. Then again, that probably makes too much sense or they just don't give a rat's ass.

Deja Vu...lol. Any Republican with conservative views would get skewered by the partisans at CU. It was about 11 years ago that Benson faced the same scrutiny...He was chastised by the CU faculty and others because of his lack of academic pedigree..had only served on academic boards. For his views on Climate change, his participation in politics as a Republican (Ran for Governor), and for his engagement in the oil and gas industry. Despite the sky falling detractors and haters, Benson has been the longest sitting president in the past 65 years, has bolstered research funding, rejected salary increases. Bottom line is that the rubber meets the road with $$$$....Benson was very good at that and I imagine Kennedy brings that same pedigree.
Benson is not even close to an equivalent. While I agree that Benson was subjected to SOME protest for his political views, that was much more of a significant minority. Others had reservations, but ultimately the regents were clear that they wanted a fundraiser, and Benson brought that in spades. He also brought the appropriate ties to the University and the State to be effective at his job despite the misgivings about his political leanings. Benson also was able to communicate his vision and connect more effectively with people. He has been a very decent President for the University, much better than the previous GOP installed Presidents of Hank Brown and Betsy Hoffman.
Kennedy lacks almost all those things, including a true fundraising pedigree, and brings a ****-ton more baggage to the table. I mean, since it was announced, he has essentially bungled every single public statement and interview that he has been given.

That is your opinion and you are certainly entitled to it. I dont share it. And to attack me as a blind partisan loyalist is funny. Very funny. There is an institutional effort to derail his nomination much like with Benson. Fortunately, the one with Benson failed and I imagine this one will as well.
His contacts are mostly confined to the upper midwest. His academic contacts are not really relevant to CU, a public research-driven university. Plus North Dakota seems to be begging for him to leave.
If you compare the resumes side by side, Benson had the much better resume to be president of CU.
