Figure most attention will be on the Buff football game against UCLA in L.A. that evening, and we're talking scrimmages against D2 schools, but with hopes and expectations for both the women's and men's teams being high this season, thought I'd start this thread in case folks want to discuss anything about this Saturday's scrimmages.

As I believe is common for scrimmages, there is no video or radio coverage scheduled for either game that I can see, and I don't even see a link for live stats.

Tickets for the women's scrimmage are $5 each plus ($1.50) fee, while the men's are $10-15 eacg plus ($1.50) fee. Links to ticket sales:
Women's - https://cubuffs.evenue.net/cgi-bin/...dataAccId=244&locale=en_US&siteId=ev_colorado

Men's - https://cubuffs.evenue.net/cgi-bin/...dataAccId=244&locale=en_US&siteId=ev_colorado

The men's scrimmage will probably be overlapping the football game (which is scheduled to begin at 5:30 PM MT), so per the below tweet it's planned to show the football game on the video boards before the scrimmage begins.

Game updates and observations on play and players from anyone attending is appreciated too. Hopefully a chance for end of bench players to get significant action.

BOULDER — The Colorado women's basketball team moves one step closer to the season this weekend, hosting Adams State in an appetizer that will lead up to the Buffaloes season opener against No. 1 LSU on Nov. 6.

The Buffs and Grizzlies will tip off at 1 p.m. MT.

Colorado was picked fourth in both the Pac-12 preseason polls and will start the season ranked No. 18 in the USA Today/WBCA poll and 20th in the AP. It's the first time the Buffs have been ranked to start a season since the 2013-14 season.

"We are really excited to play someone else," head coach JR Payne commented. "We've been practicing against each other for so long. I think we're just excited to see things come together. We've been practicing for a long time so we should know what to expect. We want to make sure we're disciplined, organized and playing tough."

The Buffs return 88.0% of its scoring from last season, boasting eight players back from last season's Sweet 16 appearance. Of those returners four of them slot into the starting lineup with Jaylyn Sherrod, Quay Miller, Frida Formann and Aaronette Vonleh all back and ready to pick up from last season. Sherrod and Miller were both Preseason All-Conference while Formann and Vonleh picked up honorable mentions.

Saturday's game will be the first chance for fans to see the team's eight newcomers on the home floor. Maddie Nolan and Sara-Rose Smith bring plenty of experience as transfers from Michigan and Missouri, respectfully. Nolan was tabbed as the No. 19 overall transfer by The Athletic. Adding to the group is redshirt freshmen Mikayla Johnson and Shelomi Sanders, who were both around for last season's run.

True freshmen Kennedy Sanders, Jadyn Atchison, Lele Tanuvasa and Ruthie Loomis-Goltl will get their first taste of collegiate basketball on Saturday as well.

"I'm just excited for everyone to get an opportunity to play in front of other people and to wear a Colorado uniform," Payne added. "We've already had a scrimmage and done some things so we should know what to expect from everyone, but the excitement of being able to play a real game is going to be fun for everybody."

This will be the second straight season the Buffs and Grizzlies have met in exhibition play. Last season saw Colorado coast to a 75-48 victory.

"Anytime you're playing an experienced team, which Adams State returns four of its five leading scorers, you're going to play against a well-organized group. They're athletic and like to push the tempo and will play fast. I think an opportunity to play against a veteran group like Adams State will prepare us for whoever we play down the road."

The only way to catch the game will be in person. The game is not being televised or available for stream.

Fans can buy tickets at CUBuffs.com/Tickets.

BOULDER — Colorado women's basketball got back to action for the first time at the CU Events Center on Saturday. The Buffaloes got the season started with an 81-57 exhibition win over Adams State.

The 20th-ranked Buffs had four players in double figures led by senior Frida Formann's 16 points. Colorado shot 50% from the field on the day and opened up the lead in the first half after a more closely contested first 20 minutes of play.

Adams State proved to be a pesky matchup for the Buffs as the smaller Grizzlies kept with CU for most of the first half.

"I think Alex [Earl], our assistant said at best. It wasn't our best game, but at least we got our first game out of the way," head coach JR Payne said. "Ironically, that really small team is much more difficult for us to play against. They're totally different matchups than we ever see. That was good for us to have a different type of challenge in our opening game. I think we'll turn on the film and see that we did a lot of good things and also a lot of things that we still need to improve. That's why you play an exhibition game. Glad it's over and we're ready for the season."

Adams State was paced by Harmanie Dominguez and her 17 points. She hit five of ASU's eight 3-pointers. The Grizzlies shot 38.1% from behind the arc and had six of their 3's come in first three quarters.

"I think we'll turn on the film and see that we we're not playing as clean as we want to play," Payne continued. "It's kind of clunky at times. We need to be able to transition from our transition offense into our half-court offense a little bit more smoothly. Like I said at the beginning, I'm glad the first is game over because usually, you can sort of knock off some of the rust and things just get better with time."
...

Colorado was able to empty the bench in the fourth quarter, getting all 15 active players in the game. Mikayla Johnson closed the game with a jumper in the final minute to push the Buffs lead to 24 by the final whistle.

Up Next
Colorado will turn its attention to the season opener against No. 1 LSU on Nov. 6. The game is part of the Hall of Fame Series and will be played at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nev.

Quotes
Head Coach JR Payne
On how important is it to get those reps against that kind of defense -
"We would love to see every type of defense, even the run and jump where they were coming and trapping a little bit. We need to see some of those different things. So that was good. I thought we settled down and did what we were supposed to do. Understanding our reads and where we're looking to get the ball."

On what it was like seeing Mikayla Johnson come in and make a few plays - "It was great. The last couple of weeks, all of our freshmen were going through that transition. It's a big jump to how fast we're playing, how physical we're playing, just the daily demands of what we're asking and things like that. The last couple of weeks Mikayla has been great in practice, and locked in on being able to just control what she can control. I thought she played really well defensively. She was in a stance, she was contesting shots, fighting through screens, just the basic stuff, which is the most important thing you know for a young player. Just be solid on the basics."

Senior Frida Formann
On playing a different type of team -
"It was good, my shot wasn't really falling as well as I wanted it to either. So just trying to get to something else just taking what the defense gave me, I think it's great. And whenever Maddie is in she pulls the defense out and gets more space."

On the team chemistry – "I think the team chemistry is really good. We just have so many pieces it's kind of a whirlwind right now with matchups. Sara and I, for example, played multiple positions today. Just getting that down and feeling comfortable with that is different than if you have good chemistry. I think we need to get settled in our roles. But I think our chemistry on and off the court is really good."

Senior Sara-Rose Smith
On her first game as a Buff

"Yeah, it's the first time I've hit the floor with the team. I didn't play in any of the scrimmages. It was just a fun experience to finally get out there – just playing with such a strong group of girls as well. I have thrived to be in this environment and it's just really exciting for what's coming for the rest of the year."

BOULDER - The University of Colorado men's basketball team passed one final preseason test with a convincing 69-45 exhibition win over MSU Denver at the CU Events Center.

Colorado jumped out to a 21-5 lead and never let the Roadrunners threaten after that. Senior forward Tristan da Silva led the way with 11 points, on 4 of 8 shooting, with seven rebounds and four assists.

Sophomore KJ Simpson added 10 points as all 12 Buffaloes that appeared in the game got into the scoring column.

Brayden Maldonado led MSU Denver with 10 points.

"Anytime you win a game by 20 plus you feel good," Boyle said. "I thought our defense tonight was pretty good. We flew around. We're pretty active."

Colorado held the Roadrunners to 34.6 percent from the field and held a 42-29 edge on the boards. The Buffaloes had 16 turnovers, but came out on the plus side in that regard, forcing MSU Denver into 21.

Colorado led by 15 at the break, 33-18, but had some scoring droughts that prevented the Buffaloes from pushing that margin further. Colorado shot 37.5 percent and scored just seven points over the final six minutes.

In the second half, the Buffs would come out looking much more dialed in offensively, shooting 52 percent (15 of 29).

Freshman Cody Williams made his much-anticipated debut with eight points five rebounds and two assists along with a couple dunks.

TCU transfer Eddie Lampkin also had some moments in the post with eight points on 4 of 6 from the field.

Simpson, da Silva and J'Vonne Hadley accounted for 20 of the Buffs 33 first-half points.

Colorado officially opens the 2023-24 season by hosting Towson on Monday, Nov. 6, at 5:30 p.m. at the CU Events Center.
