'15 CO P Alex Kinney (Signed to COLORADO)

It will move us up from where we were. The incoming talent is superior to the departing talent (or at least projected to be so). That will help in the non-conference wins, for sure. Whether it brings CU closer to peers in the Pac-12, maintains the current gap, or widens it is another question.

Relative to the rest of the Pac-12, this class is not going to give an immediate infusion that will give the Buffs any competitive advantage the next 2 years versus what other schools got. In 4 years, who knows? The players CU has on its 2018 roster from this signing day may be as good as the what the rest of the Pac-12 has on its rosters from this signing day.

Who is doing the projecting?

I think it's the fact that, while ranked 55th, it's 11th in the Pac 12 and ahead of only 7 or 8 other P5 programs.

I get that. However, we finished 12th in the Pac 12. So a recruiting class ranked 11th is an improvement. There is a continuing disconnect with where we are and the recruits we are pulling in. #55 is probably better than our record would support. And if there are 3-4 conference teams in that 30-50 range, the recruits we're getting should be able to compete with those kinds of players. We're not going to fare well against teams that consistently recruit in the top 20, but outside of that, it's a big gray area.

For all the angst around here, you'd think we had a class ranked somewhere around 110, not 55.

Well, the departing talent included 2 full-time defensive starters (Hendo & Parker), 3 guys on defense who got spot starts (Daigh, Terror & Greer), 2 full-time starters on offense (Crabb & Munyer), 3 guys on offense who got spot starts (Slavin, Goodson & McCulloch), 2 special teams starters (O'Neill & Oliver) and then other guys who couldn't crack the 2-deep. Plus attrition losses of Holland and Crowder. Mostly, these are the remains of the 2010 & 2011 classes that were not highly rated and experienced quite a lot of attrition on top of that. On paper, we're bringing in more than we lost. Just depends on whether it is retained and developed, but on initial ranks + quantity there is a gain this offseason.

1st post has ratings by kicking gurus. Call him a big time COMBO prospect. Sounds like he has a big leg and can do all 3.

Yeah, but can he do it with either or both legs? And since the punter is often holder on FG attempts, how's that gonna work out? More drop kick attempts ala Doug Flutie?

My guess is that FG kicker and FG holder will depend on how Diego has improved on his accuracy.

Great add. It is unusual for one player to handle all kicking/punting duties at college level, right?

Thought he was coming in as just a punter but looks like he will get a chance to do both. Probably not a good sign

If you have different players to each handle different duties, you go that way, but if one guy has the best ability at both kicking and punting, he's the guy. Sometimes a great fg kicker is also the punter, but you have a strong legged, less accurate guy handle kickoffs. Or the punter may kickoff and punt, but not handle short fgs and xps.
This all depends on how the rest of the roster performs, and how everyone's health holds up.

Having one guy do it all isn't ideal, as it's a lot of stress on the leg, unless of course, we quit punting so much and all he has to do is kickoff and make extra points after repeated touchdowns.

I see it as a good sign; the coaches are saying this kid has ability at several skilled positions and is being given the chance to determine what he does best.
